Spinal Cord Stimulation for Chronic Pain: What You Need To Know

  • Spinal Cord Stimulation
A spinal cord stimulator uses low voltage stimulation of the spinal nerves to block the feeling of pain. The mild electric current is delivered through a pulse generating device that is surgically implanted under the skin. The stimulation feels like a mild tingling in the area where the current is placed. Pain is reduced because the electrical current interrupts the pain signal from reaching the brain.
Spinal cord stimulation may be an option for patients with chronic pain associated with sciatica, failed back surgery, or nerve pain, who have not benefited from more conservative therapies.

I have chronic leg pain, so I did the trial, twice, and it.did not help in any way. Remember this procedure does not fix your original problem, it just suppose to reduces your pain. But if you have insurance I still would recommend you give it a try because of all the other procedures my Doctor has tried on me this procedure was the easiest to receive. It is not scary at all.
The scary thing is living with level 9 pain for over a year and felling like the Doctor just wants to sale you the next fad procedure. The more things they try on you the more money they make.

-Spinal cord stimulation doesn't help with back pain, says new review
      University of Sydney/Cochrane Review. March 7, 2023
“The review concluded that spinal cord stimulation is no better than a placebo for treating low back pain, with probably little to no benefit for people with low back pain or improvement in their quality of life.
There was little to no clinical data regarding the long-term effectiveness of spinal cord stimulation.”
“The researchers also found that adverse side effects to the surgery were poorly documented overall, preventing them from concluding the level of risk involved. Harms from spinal cord stimulation could include nerve damage, infection, and the electrical leads moving, all of which may need repeated surgeries.”
“The review team found multiple gaps in clinical data.
There were no studies that investigated the long-term (more than 12 months) impact of spinal cord stimulation on low back pain. The longest was a single six-month trial. The majority of clinical trials only looked at the immediate impact of the device, which is a time frame of less than a month.”

It is known to work for 7 out of 10 eligible patients. I was thrilled during my SCS trial to be in the 70% -- it was life-changing for me. It reduced my pain by 50-70% depending on the day. It got me out of bed, walking, and sitting. My issues began 30 years ago and this is the first effective modality I've ever had, following years of injections, ablations, and surgeries. I'm getting the permanent implant soon.

I know it may seem like it is all about $$$ - but the physicians I know who treat pain patients, truly want to help you. They really are willing to try whatever is available because horrific pain ruins lives. It is terrible when things don’t end up helping.

So, hold on, let's assume a person is suffering from diabetic peripheral neuropathy and has nerve damage, the SCS obviously won't heal the nerve damage, but it will make it so instead of pain or burning it will feel like vibrations? Does that mean that even with an SCS someone could theoretically still continue to keep having nerve damage if let's say they get an SCS and then don't control their glucose?
