    After 50 years of trying to understand the guitar it is you Ricky who are the key to it all. It’s all making sense, my playing is improving, and I have a logical approach to helping my son learn how to play.
    It would be fantastically helpful if you could publish a list of the best order to take your lessons in. It is hard to map their interrelationships in this asynchronous virtual world. PS I’m impressed to by your developing production values too. In fact I’m so impressed by everything thing you do I’m about to make a donation, the first of many if I can afford it. Thanks Ricky

    Hi Ricky , I see similar comments previously but this video was a classic ‘light bulb moment’ for me. Love your mix of theory with simple examples that helps pull it all together . After 2 years of random chords and play along tracks ( parrot style) you have given me the understanding to be more flexible across the fretboard . Thanks

    I’ve been watching videos, reading books, and have a fairly basic understanding of music theory. But I just had to say thank you for taking the time to give me this video putting it all together. Showing how the major and minor scales work together is brilliant. Showing me how to use the bass tones work to create the chords (scale) on the neck, very helpful. Thank you!

  • @robnic52
    @robnic52 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Rickey, great lesson thanks. You are shifting the pentatonic 1 shape down three frets and calling it the minor pentatonic 'shape' and then explaining that that shift down makes shape 1 become the Major pentatonic shape. Would it be less boggling to use the rule: first finger on the root note makes it minor pentatonic 1. Little finger on the root note makes it Major penata 1. All the modes are just the full major scale 'shape' shifted up and down against the root note of the key (the root of whatever chords are being played). Minor starts and ends on the sixth note of the major scale. The bookends (great analogy) move but the scale shapes (on guitar) remain the same? The same applies for all the other modes. I understand this theoretically but still have trouble finding my way around in a live music situation. It's practice, getting it under your fingers and clear in your head (second nature) is not easy. I guess these simple rules can give you a lifeline in real performance situations.

  • @phile.1381

    Hi Ricky, I learned a much better way to number the pentatonic boxes to keep from getting lost on the fretboard. The notes of Am pentatonic are A, C, D, E, G, so I call the boxes 6,1,2,3,5 after the degrees of the major scale. While "box 1" might be okay for some minor root, the next box being called "box 2" for either the minor 3rd or the major root makes no sense at all. Try it, you'll like this concept. Let me know what you think. This new way lets you instantly have both E strings as box guides.

    • @rickysguitar
      @rickysguitar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny you should say that. I know exactly what you're saying. I have a video coming soon that uses the scale degrees in a super intuitive way. I think you'll dig it :)
      I don't really think in terms of box patterns these days myself. I teach them as they're a rite of passage for all guitarists and most of my audience on youtube are looking at easier ways to get to grips with improv/soloing.
