I learned the truth at 17 that love was made for beauty queens - oh how that stings, how true at 17. And today, and of course, Jesse come there’s a hole in the bed where we slept - I’m leaving the light on the stairs - I’ll wait for you. How many of us felt that pain, I love Janis - she helped me thru some hard times. Mahalo Janis Ian.
My sister and I met her in dulin two weeks ago,it brought my sister back to when at 17,it brought her tears of joy.janis ian is something something very special in my sister's heart.
I went to see this remarkable woman in columbus ohio in May 2022...I will never forget it...ever...She is remarkable...and a voice of reason amid the din of today's youth. She did not do this song....Buy her last album....it is amazing...Thank you Janis...
Janis' beautiful voice and phrasing bring me to joyous tears every time I hear "Jesse." I've been a fan since I was a young teen ~ just couldn't get enough of "Society's Child." Her songwriting is timeless. God bless her for all she's been through.....
Aw shucks, wonderful version of Jesse... I once drove a cab in Toronto and delivered Janis and a few of hers to a downtown hotel in Toronto from a not terribly good Chinese restaurant in the east end... I drove her without saying a word BECAUSE! When we go to the hotel the band dumped out of the cab and left her with the tab... I said, No, not for you... Her artistry has so enriched me, has been in my heart forever... Thank-you for posting this and thank-you forever, Janis. -Brian Vanderlip
This song came out shortly before my nephew Jesse, committed suicide. Her beautiful voice and the sorrowfulness of this song has always, always made me feel like she's speaking to our loss.
I’m so sorry to hear about your nephew, Jesse. I can only imagine how this song strikes a mournful chord of sadness and bittersweet memories of your beautiful nephew. My heart hurts for you. I pray you will be given peace , as much is possible, anyway. I will never be able to listen to this song without thinking of your tragic loss, ever again. He was blessed to have such a loving family member as you. God bless you and keep you. - Terri Kendall 😭🙏🏻❤️
I was so blessed to see her in Santa Cruz, CA about 6-8 yrs ago. I'd read her book Society's Child, so good..... I just love her she's just so down to earth and talented. I brought my Stars album and she signed it. What an honor to hear her play and sing live. Let alone get to meet her. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Cool story! I still have that album. Always loved your songs . I always wished I could write poetry like your lyrics. I’ll never forget At Seventeen. I still have that album too.
Such a sad and soulful song, I could listen to it a 1,000 times and hear something different in those lyrics every time. One of my favorite songs ever.
Beautiful so many years ago and still beautiful now. Such a heartbreaking song that brings tears to my eyes even now. Thanks for you and your gift Janis
...you should have never had to do that Janis, but I'm glad you did, humility is the beauty of life, if not for the oppressors...you are the greatest...I saw you a long time ago, I wish to hear your beautiful sounds, voice and music, once more before my bucket of life fails...your are the *mountain of music**, life would be less without you...bless you forever and amore...thank you...Peterx
On this day in 1973 {June 19th} Roberta Flack performed "Jesse" on her own ABC-TV special 'Roberta Flack: The First Time Ever'... A little under three months later on September 16th, 1973 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #83; five weeks later on October 21st, 1973 it would peak at #30 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 9 weeks... It reached #3 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart and #19 on Billboard's R&B Singles chart... The song was surrounded by #1 records; her two previous releases, "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly with His Song", both peaked at #1; then "Jesse" was succeeded by "Feel Like Makin' Love", which also reached #1... "Jesse" was composed by Janis Ian; and Ms. Ian would record it herself for her 1974 album 'Stars'...
Such a happy accident, stumbling upon this video was! Thank you, Joan Maute, for posting it!!! And everlasting thanks to Janis Ian - your words & your voice so often sang of what I could not speak... beautiful!
Whoever is sitting next to the camera, omg......first the phone, then all that whispering, then wiggling, moving around, then omg I heard a zipper? Really? If I were sitting there I wouldn't be able to move. Her voice is mesmerizing.
Her voice has grown older, but has aged as gracefully as Janis. This song is still as beautiful and poignant as it was when it was new. I much prefer Janis's version of her song, over the popular version by Roberta Flack.
It seems to have a different feeling now she is older singing it, as if the person died but still in her daily patterns and heart. I would have been letting some tears flow if I had been there in person!
I was in DC with relatives having lunch and two gays walked in, kissed each other and sat down. I just had to sucked it up and mind my own business, Roger Stone said it all , who people choose to love is their business.
If you watch all of her live performances, Janis is constantly tuning her guitar. She has perfect pitch, and even the slightest bit out of tune is like fingers on a chalkboard.
Beautiful and charming. Great songwriter and vocalist, not to forget an incredible guitar player.
It's obvious that everyone was in awe and genuinely moved by her performance🤗
I consider this one of Janis' best songs. It always brings me to tears.

My favourite female singer, still sounds great in her later years.
Janis writes music, her lyrics are poetry, her voice so sweet, plays guitar and piano. What a true talent she is!!!
26.12.2023...crying at her beauty.....
the most underappreciated woamn in American music! Janis truly defined the last couple of generations of Americans with her words and music!!! xo xo
Absolutely unappreciated

Wow, what a beautiful greyhaired lady she became - and what an amazing voice she kept!
her voice is still stunning! :D

BRAVA - the only word that ever comes to mind when I hear this fabulous woman.
My favorite song ever is At Seventeen to this day it still makes me cry. I still feel she wrote the song for me after all these years.
when she played At Seventeen for her mom, her mom stated that it was her story
17 is my all time favourite. I am playing all Janice's music tonight. It reminds me of my beautiful but sometimes challenging youth.

Absolutely wonderful. Her voice has held up well!
Janis is wonderful. A great write, singer, performer and human being.
Great story, I love this lady!
It shows such skill and control the way she performs this so slowly. I just really love her music.

Very freaking noisy!!
I love Janice and this song above all so much - thank you for posting this...
If you love her, learn to spell her name properly! Just my opinion; but there is no excuse for a fan being ignorant, these days! Cheers anyway! 🎉
This was the encore at The Arts Center of Cannon County in Woodbury, TN Janis Ian concert 11/18/2010.
Heard her sing this at Gateshead and Leeds on her last UK tour ... very intimate and beautiful gift to her audience. Thanks Janis.

One special lady...love from Ireland. Anyone know the backstory to this song? Joan Baez did a beautiful cover
Wow
Genius. Period.
Wow....
@OrionSX would you share the chords? it is so nice...
❤❤❤
janis Ian (unplugged)? She was never plugged. Which was also one of her big themes.
素晴らしい!😂
music starts at 2:15
Still sounds like a song bird
I worked hard to learn the chords to this song....it's the most elegant progression I know besides Malaguena. I'm a little disappointed.
If you watch all of her live performances, Janis is constantly tuning her guitar. She has perfect pitch, and even the slightest bit out of tune is like fingers on a chalkboard.
OMG A TRUMP COMMERCIAL CAME UP ON YOUR POSTED A JANIS IAN SONG! LOLOL WOW THAT IS SAD! otherwise I adore this ...
