Really interesting video, thank you 😊 I remember loading our family car onto the Motorail wagons at Inverness, then woke up in London fresh and ready for the drive to Portsmouth and on the ferry to Spain. Happy memories of the 90s 🥰
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Btw the last time I passed through Fort William, the old concrete Motorail ramp was still clearly visible.
@@JohnnyHooverTravels the old building (which is now Pizza Express) next to Inverness Station was deconstructed, turned 90 degrees and then rebuilt when the second part of the Eastgate Centre and Falcon Square was built as well. Inverness Station area looked very different back then 😀
I was lucky enough to do two nights on the Caledonian Sleeper this week between Aberdeen and Euston - wonderful train, wonderful staff, wonderful experience
Yes, it's great! I've seen a few videos that have been a bit picky, but I loved every minute and slept really well. And I agree the staff were lovely too.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, i look forward to exploring more myself! I’ve a few other Scottish trips from this last visit to edit and publish, so they will be coming up soon on the channel.
Good insight into how the Serco Mk5 product is shaping up. A far cry from the Mk1 sleeper cabins with the portable plumbing device stored under the sink I had the joy of experiencing some years ago on a Stirling to Kensington Olympia Motorail service.
Crikey Motorail - that was indeed a long time ago! There's still the old Motorail ramp at Fort William station I believe. This trip will be better now that I understand there is somewhere to get a shower at Euston. Thanks for watching and sharing your memories 👍
Thank you for the kind words! Got more coming out every Friday. Upcoming will include more Scottish and also some Irish trains. Oh and next up tomorrow is my 1st report on a Stena ferry. Thank you for subscribing.
You never went to the Caledonian Sleeper waiting lounge located across the road from the Royal Highland Hotel , despite living in Inverness, never been in it myself. Have you noticed the logo of the stag has 5 branches? The three on the left represent Fort William, Inverness and Aberdeen, the two on the right represent Edinburgh and Glasgow
The Inverness lounge does not accept Classic tickets. Only people in Club and Double rooms have access. However, I did walk past and should probably have shown where it is and and said why I had no access. And yes, I knew that about the logo, but then proceeded to forget it whilst making the video! It is indeed a lovely design detail. Hopefully you still enjoyed watching the video despite those shortcomings. I will certainly be returning to Inverness to spend more time in the city and take the chance to explore more of the Highlands, and I hope my video has encouraged others to do the same. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Many thanks for this video. We are planning a similar trip. Can you suggest where / which website should i buy tickets - there seem to be too many.. Travel Oct.
Direct on the Caledonian sleeper website. But if you plan to travel around the UK/Europe by rail, then also worth looking at buying a Eurail pass (if you live outside Europe) so that you can use it on other trains too. For general Europeans train advice we always advise to start with "The Man in Seat 61". He is a great place for lots of train travel information. Oh, and thanks for watching! 👍
Thanks 👍 for your informative video on my local station, Inverness. Did you know that there's a Barbers Shop on Platform 7 I think ? You can see it in your video.
Thank you so much for your kind comment, much appreciated. I actually completely missed that there was a barbers shop at the station, which was a shame because that would have been a good bit of quirky info to add to the narration. Oh, and I must say I laughed this morning when I read your comment, cos I also thought one reading of your comment was "great video, but boy you need a haircut" 😆
Great! I hope you have an excellent trip. Scott on Plans,Trains, Everything just did a video showing that the Aberdeen 1st class lounge now has a shower (but bring your own towel) - that could be handy to freshen up when you leave the train. I appreciate you may have a cabin with a shower, but they will probably be a bit underpowered and cramped compared to a "proper one" at the station. Thanks for watching! 👍
Basically they are for old people and young people. 60+ or 16-25 can purchase a railcard. The rate is £30 per year, but with 1/3 discount you can make that money back very quickly indeed. Thank you for watching another video!
I took the Plymouth train from Aberdeen to London the driver that couple that trains together at Edinburgh didn't do a good job, bashing into us like we were a bunch of coal wagons and probably woke up like 200 people! Maybe doesn't happen all the time. Fun expereience in Club class but if you aren't a deep sleeper, I'd just suggest going during the day if you can.
My experience was completely seamless. I was completely unaware of the the train being joined together as I slept. Yes, it is certainty an "experience" even if you don't sleep well, although I'm pleased to say I slept like a log. I'm doing Penzance to London sleeper next week, so it will be good to compare them. 👍
When I used to interrail. I’d find three adjacent seats, lay down my sleeping bag horizontally across them and fall asleep rocked by the train. I wonder if any uk railway TH-camrs have ever done that… v Cool vlog
Well, I had been in the pub for a wee while before getting on the train. It wasn’t like I was desperate for a beer. Mind you, if I’d not eaten yet, that would have been quite a delay for something to eat.
Actually if you see on the vid, it was about 22:15 when I finally set off for the beer. Faffing on my phone or listening to American football podcast I suspect.
It is SUCH A SHAME that the UK railways are SO INSANELY EXPENSIVE to use - any class anywhere. My full family just loves trains, but we are only using buses OR OUR OWN CARS! Such a shame. 😒 But thank you for the excellent video! 😃 Appreciated. 🙂🙂🙂
Yes it is a real shame that trains are not more affordable, especially as they are definitely part of a more sustainable future... and they are fun to ride!
Really nice video As someone mentioned below the train prices seem to be high My brother and his son was planning to travel from London to Derby, but they chose the bus instead

I love the views
Jeez those train corridors are narrow! (Hav’nt been back in 60 years) Great vid. Cheers from Oz.
Thanks for watching! Yes, they are narrow. But I suppose that is better than having a short bed! The UK loading gauge is so restrictive.

I love my train travels but get quite clostraphobic so not sure I could manage a sleeper train.
That's a good point. The cabins are pretty small, so maybe are not for everyone.
Thanks for watching 👍
The fort willam links up with the aberdeeen and inverness sleepers at edinburgh Waverley
Indeed it does. You fall asleep on a fairly short train, only to alight at Euston from a really long one!
