I listened to the audio commentary on this film and they mentioned her. The cast just happened to find her last minute, I think she had been a singer on Broadway and managed to have a brief film career before retiring. I can't recall a name though... but that was her actual voice in the film!
Whoever choreographed the rhythmic steps in this song is a genius. Not only is it the 'heartbeat' of Skid Row and how its denizens have fallen into its dismal rhythm, but you can hear Seymour and Audrey trying to break away from that rhythm. Even when Seymour shuffles in-step to try and walk with everyone else, he acknowledges aloud that, "Depression's just status quo," before breaking away again.
The three girls are literally my favorite part of any musical number they're in. No matter how many times this show is done, the movie trio cannot be beat

I love how you can hear all the unique individual voices when they focus on specific extras/chorus members... All of these people were extremely talented. One of the best scenes from a musical captured on film.
The funny thing is that people live in their own skid rows. Skid Row doesn't have to be a place, but it can be a person's life too. Love this song and sequence so much.

It's your right to exercise your free will and express your personal opinions, but as Ethan was getting at, it's a pretty privileged view to say skid row can just be in the mind of people, which is actually true, but that's not what this song is about. If it were it would remove most of the weight and emotion, as many people out there have a skid row in the mind AND in real life. That's why it's such a heartbreaking and moving scene featuring people of all types stuck in a physical rut, not just a mental skid row.

Not just middle America. The struggle is real all over. The cost of living is ridiculous in other parts of the country, too. The vast majority of us are just trying to survive. The song is specifically about folks trying to survive in decaying urban areas, but the story and sentiment is universal.

My whole life, that first line of the song, sung by the older black lady, has been a pinnacle of singing for me. I’d practice that line alone just because I loved how she sang it. Best voice in the movie.
Seymour's part always makes me cry. This is my favorite song in the movie. I just love the bridge where Seymour and Audrey sing together, their unmet desires syncing perfectly. The ending is quite uplifting to me, and I like to listen to this song when I'm down.
I love this song, not just musically, but the fact that different background singers get one quick line for themselves, it brings real characters into the song which is one of the ways this songs is so relatable. Incredible how a personality can reflect through in just a couple seconds! And especially the guy at 2:30; I sometimes watch this sequence over and over again just to listen to him! So beautiful…

This movie is so underrated. Not only does it have great songs but the music numbers are perfectly shot. The practical sets/ effects are realistic and grungy enough to buy into this world.
I fell in love with Rick Moranis' voice! It seems like nothing too special at first, but he has these 1-2 second solo's that blow me away because they have force behind it and they have great pitch! LOVE HIS VOICE!
The bit with the hobos at 3:49 is so great. As are many added details in the film version of this musical. It's a nice touch to point out that Seymour is not yet at rock bottom, but it's always just lurking around the corner. Without his job and room at Mushnik's, that could well be him.
I know this is very late, but the three girls are like a Greek chorus. In early Greek musicals to help the audience understand, they started having a chorus to help explain the story. The reason they're so dressed so nicely when singing is because the Greeks had to distinguish them somehow from the actors.

I'm 40 years old here in 2020. I can't believe it's been 34 years since I first saw this movie. To me, this is the most underrated song of any musical. Then again, I'm just some bum on skid row. So what do I know?
This has always been my absolute favorite song, by far, in this musical. You can totally hear the desperation, anger, and pain in nearly every character’s solo. Even the company expressed their disdain for having to live in the poverty stricken ghettos of NY. Especially when they all come together to harmonize “down on skid row!” Gah, it still gives me the good tinglies all over at that part. 😆
This song still gives me chills to this day!! The music is phenomenal, the singing is spectacular, the story is touching, and the choreography is incredible!! ✨10/10✨

God the memories.....The 80’s was truly a remarkable decade for cinema and as a child of the 80’s, there were a handful of movies I watched over and over again with “Little Shop of Horrors” being one of them .....”Ghostbusters,” “Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back,” the ‘89 “Batman,” “The Goonies,” “Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom,”.........
as a kid I just wanted to "see the big plant" but as an adult musician/gamedev studying this era for my spooky 80s time loop adventure game I see this is a galaxy tier musical, within the style of DooWop, Motown, and even hints of their predecessors gospel and R&B, all wrapped in a Disney princess movie (literally written by Allen Menken, who later wrote Little Mermaid and others), and the practical monster effects are unparalleled even to this day, and it required another galaxy tier movie like Aliens to make this not get the Oscar for visual effects in 1986. I've watched this in HD twice in the past two days and love it more each time. HD cinematography plus these songs really make the movie shine.
I've been watching this a lot lately, and what I have learned to appreciate is that they keep doing these cool musical things where they all line up in the streets, and you think they're going to dance, and then, nope. This is skid row, people don't fucking dance.
I absolutely love 1:56 to 2:04 for some reason it sounds so beautiful, and i love the male voices harmonizing with females' singing, it's very pretty. It feels like a song of its own

I totally love this movie-- it is very close to being at the top of my "Top Ten Movies of All time." It really captures the mood and feelings of city-dwellers in the 1960s-- people who lived on "Skid Row" and were desperate to get out and find a better life for themselves. The whole movie is great, and I highly recommend it!
Damn I miss Howard Ashman... He was too beautiful for this world, his talent in giving Ariel her voice, a Beast his soul and not to mention a plant his monstrous personality will always be remembered! If only he saw his work from beauty and the beast ❤️ Love you Ashman!!

I think I was about 13 when I saw this movie and right from this opening song, I knew it would be one of my favorites forever. And it totally is. Still to this day.
Yeah, they existed in film way before the Tv show Martin.....although I did watch that show too.....because they were on it. But not sayin Martin ain't funny as hell cuz he is!!!
This scene made such an impression on me as a child in the '80s. I understood the skid row they were talking about. I was growing up in a tiny 2bd apartment in the Bronx with my parents and sister, and we were definitely poor. I saw poverty every time we went into the big city for a special visit. I remember just kind of feeling the pain of every character in that scene, that feeling of being stuck somewhere that feels bad, pretty much all the time.
1:32 down town where the hop heads flop in the snow- just realizing that since Skid row is in California, snow is not snow 😅 literally one if the most impactful movies of my life and this JUST clicked for me

I watched this film almost daily when I was young and still watch it regularly now, I know it word for word. Something that used to fascinate me when I was young was how Crystal got her hair and costume changed and got into that alley so quick 😂 - young minds and the magic of film! And I was obsessed with the fact that you could hear the sounds of their heels as they danced and moved around, I would listen out for it and it gave me life.
This was hands down my mother’s favorite musical. We used to watch this so much. I think of her every time I watch it. Makes me emotional every time. She was the best.

This has always been my absolute favorite song, by far, in this musical. You can totally hear the desperation, anger, and pain in nearly every character’s solo. Even the company expressed their disdain for having to live in the poverty stricken ghettos of NY. Especially when they all come together to harmonize “down on skid row!” Gah, it still gives me the good tinglies all over at that part. 😆
This is one of my three favorite song in this musical. Mean Green Mother from Outer Space and Somewhere That’s Green are the other two songs.

as a kid I just wanted to "see the big plant" but as an adult musician/gamedev studying this era for my spooky 80s time loop adventure game I see this is a galaxy tier musical, within the style of DooWop, Motown, and even hints of their predecessors gospel and R&B, all wrapped in a Disney princess movie (literally written by Allen Menken, who later wrote Little Mermaid and others), and the practical monster effects are unparalleled even to this day, and it required another galaxy tier movie like Aliens to make this not get the Oscar for visual effects in 1986. I've watched this in HD twice in the past two days and love it more each time. HD cinematography plus these songs really make the movie shine.

I've been watching this a lot lately, and what I have learned to appreciate is that they keep doing these cool musical things where they all line up in the streets, and you think they're going to dance, and then, nope. This is skid row, people don't fucking dance.
I absolutely love 1:56 to 2:04 for some reason it sounds so beautiful, and i love the male voices harmonizing with females' singing, it's very pretty. It feels like a song of its own
I was in this show my sophomore year of high school as a street person and next May a local civic theatre in Richmond Indiana is doing this show it's a favorite of mine

I totally love this movie-- it is very close to being at the top of my "Top Ten Movies of All time." It really captures the mood and feelings of city-dwellers in the 1960s-- people who lived on "Skid Row" and were desperate to get out and find a better life for themselves. The whole movie is great, and I highly recommend it!

This scene made such an impression on me as a child in the '80s. I understood the skid row they were talking about. I was growing up in a tiny 2bd apartment in the Bronx with my parents and sister, and we were definitely poor. I saw poverty every time we went into the big city for a special visit. I remember just kind of feeling the pain of every character in that scene, that feeling of being stuck somewhere that feels bad, pretty much all the time.
The way she sings "Til it's 5pm" is so genuine and filled with a disgust and exhaustion. I love that.

I watched this film almost daily when I was young and still watch it regularly now, I know it word for word. Something that used to fascinate me when I was young was how Crystal got her hair and costume changed and got into that alley so quick 😂 - young minds and the magic of film! And I was obsessed with the fact that you could hear the sounds of their heels as they danced and moved around, I would listen out for it and it gave me life.
