I'm late to the party here, but been liking your videos. Great details. I don't like the age of the book as a cop out, but any oxidation that does occur in the metal of the staples would partially be affected by the length of time the metal has been exposed to open air and/or moisture. Definitely the care of the book is the biggest factor - the more air and moisture you can keep away, the better as far as oxidation goes. Also, take into consideration the material used to make the staples. Especially back in the day there were probably at least a few different staple manufacturers using different variations of steel, some probably more prone to oxidation than others (might account for your black staple vs. normal rusty ones). Not sure if you ever got deeper into this, but it would be interesting to find out if someone at Marvel or DC knows details about the actual printing materials and staples were used throughout the history of their comics. Keep up the great videos. Oh - and replace all the staples in your books with GOLD to stop any oxidation!

Black rust happens in a low oxygen environment. Red rust happens in normal to high oxygen. Black rust is more filmy stain like textured. Red rust is more flakey dust textured. In the modern book with the high arch staples, the staples were really too long for the number of pages in that particular book.

Thanks, Michael! That is good to know. As for the modern book.. Marvel uses those high arched staples for all of their books now. I hate them. I have no idea why they do that.

I have some books from the late 60s and the staple are different from most comics. I was wondering if yhey have been restapled.

Can't say anything really without seeing it. Could very well be, though.

I know this is an older video, but wanted to know if the rust could migrate to my other books?I keep mine all in a climate controlled storage unit

I agree with this guy a hundred percent! If you're going to spend your hard-earned money on any comic book, especially an expensive one, then pay close attention to the staples! I have seen high-grade books in CGC slabs with rust on them - WTF? MAKES NO SENSE! The damn rust will just keep eating away at the book over the years - just horrible!

Appreciate the comment! Yeah, I can never understand the example you brought up. Having rust inside a slab is completely pointless IMO.

The Hulk issue was an opportunity to try and carry out a preservation repair. You simply buy a bargain bin, or extremely damaged, comic from the same era and remove the staples carefully and use them as a replacement. It would be great practice in preservation.

I have been concerned about staples. If I had a rare or key would have the staple removed. Great topic.

The only way I would replace staples is if I knew the book was being eaten by them, and i had no plans on grading.

@@json3000 I soak all of the original screws for all my retro game carts and all my consoles in vinegar over night. Soaking staples in vinegar could be an option. But you better be damn good with needle nose pliers and you might get the book marked as a refurbished book if you grade it.

I have a#58 X-Men that the staple pooped, the book is beautiful never opened it and I'm thinking it just ate thru paper because of age.

I soke all the rusty screws holding my old nintendo carts and consoles in vinegar. I'm not sure if any of these screws and staples have any protective coating, but I bet the vinegar would strip it off. Ginna have to perform a miracle to remove and reinsert staples haha, but it's a thought

I used to put my pennies in vinegar to get them shiny again! lol. Yeah I wouldn't put a staple that was soaked in vinegar back into a comic. Best thing would be to change out the staples completely, but that is considered restoration and would get the purple label of death from CGC.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture for sure. Gotta consider these things. I'm all for restoring completely tarnished books though. May not be important history to some, but I view that as preserving history.

Staple condition is often overlooked by sellers. I always use a black or red rusty staple as a bargaining point when negotiating a buy. Works every time! It does affect the grade from 3rd parties for sure.

Right after you made your video the other say i opened up a book I had just gotten and of course, black oxidation all through the book. Luckily it wasn't anything expensive. This is something I will for sure pay more attention to in the future because of your videos. Thanks!
