All of the main characters were voiced by black actors- black comic actor Al "Jocko" Fann was Rickety Rocket, black actor Bobby Ellerbee was Cosmo, black comic actor Johnny Brown [of Laugh-In fame] was Splashdown, black comic [and later adult film] actor John Anthony Bailey [of Wonderbug fame] was Sunstroke, and black actress Dee Timberlake [of The Young Sentinels/Space Sentinels fame] was Venus.
As much as we love all these old cartoons, who was pitching these absolutely crazy ideas to the network execs? Imagine being the guy trying to sell this cartoon: "Yeah, it's set in the future, and this uh, rocket car is made out of old junk, and it comes to life... and has a big smiling mouth, and likes to say it's name a lot... `Rickety Rocket!' So, what do you think?"
How can you not say it's racist when even in the "future" black folks got a bootleg, junkyard rocket and a shack, even when everyone else has a futuristic dwelling? Alas, it's all I had when I was a kid so I dealt
Some black people actually found affluence offensive back then. The Cosbies were regularly mocked because they weren't "realistic". Remember Good Times? People loved that show. Fat Albert was concocted and produced by a Black man. Just that now everything offends everybody.
Amazing how many subliminal messages where planted in the 70s & 80s cartoons. I still shake my head whenever mammy makes an appearance on the original Tom and Jerry cartoons.
In the 70s, 80s and 90s the west was not filled with political correctness and feminism like it is nowadays and people could relax and did not turn everything into something offensive, racist and sexist like now.
If only yall lived in those days. Lots of these things weren't that offensive back then. People were more relaxed. Jerry frequently smacked Tom into blackface. The Dukes of Hazzard regularly displayed the rebel flag. Louis Armstrong was a staple, and the kids loved Buckwheat. Watch, some things commonplace now, your kids will find offensive.
At least in portugal it lasted for a while, being aired in 1 of only 2 channels (rtp2, if memory is correct) available, both public networks. Was one of my favorite cartoons. My bestfriend is nicknamed after cosmos. C-C-C-Cooosmooos!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Lord! I'd forgotten about this one. So many of these one season shows. Sadly in Canada we don't get boomerang so we have little chance of seeing stuff like this again.
Joe Ruby and Ken Spears also created Wonderbug so there is a connection there, Johnny Brown played building supervisor Nathan Bookman on Good Times and also guest starred on the 70s live kids shows The Ghost Busters, The Lost Saucer, and Monster Squad [coming to DVD soon].
As a child,I liked a lot of cartoons. As a grown man,I have a different, perspective. This is,one of those times. This cartoon, was produced, during a time when,"ethnic humor",was at its, peek. It does, NOT,...stand the test of time. Thus,..it can be,considered,...offensive.
Wow .I just remembered this show out the blue the other day and was thinking "Wow that was a crazy show " The way it portrayed Black people ,even in the future was Depressing .But I remembered as a child how much I liked the show
Nailed it. My feelings exactly. I can only hope its inexplicable self-awareness allowed to fully experience the pathetic nature of its existence before its inevitable structural failure and devastatingly explosive impact.
It's the jestons, speed buggy that fly and fat albert in one I remember watching this on boomerang I like it too bad it only 16 episodes I see why it didn't last long
I'm inclined to believe that Rickety Rocket was removed because some of the plotlines made no sense and has very little to do with African-American prejudice. On the other hand, it's possible that might have been "urban" for some viewers. But that's just my humble opinion, such as it is.
So the whole thing fuses Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons (or Jabberjaw, which might be a closer correlation), Speed Buggy, Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids, and Nipsey Russell. I don't find it particularly negative because I don't see anyone DOING anything negative, and there were lots of anthropomorphic-representation characters (like Rickety Rocket) who had exaggerated features and rather loud personalities. I would have to actually see a full episode to get what people are on about.
I remember watching this on it was a pretty good show the only real thing I didn't like was the character cosmo he was he was like a mix of a Stereotypy car sales man and a game show host and he just got on my nerves
Can't say I ever saw this, but the name is familure. Todays saturdays are lame by comparison to what we had as kids, Scooby Doo, Road Runner and Coyote, Bugs Bunny, Justice League etc.
How about we laugh about the absurd racism, realize it’s a product of the times, be grateful that we as a country are evolving into something better and move on.
Even in a utopian future a brother can't catch a break
Ow, the memories 😅
Barely remembered this, so had to hunt it down after seeing Double Toasted talk about it : th-cam.com/video/GCslIs6juK8/w-d-xo.html
@@MrChupacabra555I became a big fan of double toasted
It's like the Good Times of the future 😁😁😁

We get it, they were black
We get it, they were black
I used to watch this cartoon. I liked it, brings back wonderful memories.
So this was the animated version of Homeboys In Outer Space..
Scooby-Doo + The Jetsons + Speed Buggy + Fat Albert + a blender = This.
Add What’s Happening to that too.

Was definitely trying to cash off of fat Alberts success
How can you not say it's racist when even in the "future" black folks got a bootleg, junkyard rocket and a shack, even when everyone else has a futuristic dwelling? Alas, it's all I had when I was a kid so I dealt
K. A. Davila Unfortunately....even today that shit hasn't changed
I thought it was just a mindless rip from Fat Albert. (And The Jetsons. And Speed Buggy).
Okay, Rickety's design is hella racist.
We the Rickety Rocket community members has taken offense to this.
At least you have something else to cry "racist" about . Since it's probably all you ever do .
Some black people actually found affluence offensive back then. The Cosbies were regularly mocked because they weren't "realistic". Remember Good Times? People loved that show. Fat Albert was concocted and produced by a Black man. Just that now everything offends everybody.
Double Toasted brought me here.
when Saturday morning was fun 👍👍👍👍
And when the west was not filled with political correctness and made everything offensive in some way.
Fun nigga Lls look at the above comments
Fat Albert meets Speed Buggy meets the Jetsons meets Scooby-Doo LOL!!
I love cartoons from the 70's/80's where a whole bunch of kids would have to solve a mystery.
All of them were ripoffs of each other. Lack of originality in all of them.
@@Cerdo_asqueroso Well they were pretty much created by the same people
Wow, a big lipped aircraft amongst other things lol. Gotta love it

Same here...with her "O-W-T" spelling of out.

it could have been worse. At least the plane didn't yell HONKETY HONKETT
This would have gotten canceled hard in the 21st century
Rickety Rocket was my favorite cartoon - Greg Nice
Rickety Rocket BLAST OFF!!!!...wow what memories I had allmost forgot about this cartoon.
Hey...it's good times in space!
I didn't discover this cartoon til it aired on Boomerang around 2003/2004. I enjoyed it allot
It's an great show and I wish that a second season would happen. 😀👍
Jeeezus, who ok’d this? Who looked at this and thought it was a good idea?! Holy shit
Nice and Smooth...

C-C-C-Cooosmooos!!!!!!!!!!!!
I still love this cartoon
Though oddly enough it was shown on The Plastic Man Comedy-Adventure Show 1984 half-hour syndication package!!
Isn't that Sticks, the only black man in the "Happy Days" Universe? If it's the same guy, he did a lot of porn movies in the 1980s.
Good Lord! I'd forgotten about this one. So many of these one season shows. Sadly in Canada we don't get boomerang so we have little chance of seeing stuff like this again.
So this is what inspired the character Rockety Rocket from Imaginationland.
Finally, I found this cartoon. Thanx for posting.
This was my favorite cartoon
Fat Albert in the flying Speed Buggy.
Kinda like The Jetsons meets a flying Speed Buggy!!!
Exactly what i think of every time i hear Rickety Rocket. I hear ya!
Holy crap. This is Rickety Racist.
Oh my God, that's horrible! ...Who names their kid Sunstroke?
I feel like it's a nickname
Same one who names their kid Splashdown, or Cosmo...
My dad used to watch this show when he was a kid
Didnt he play drums for Poison?
I suppose we can always view it as those having to work from the ground up if one looks at junk in that matter.
LOL!I remember watching this cartoon! For some reason Rickey Rocket reminds me of Sinbad...
Joe Ruby and Ken Spears also created Wonderbug so there is a connection there, Johnny Brown played building supervisor Nathan Bookman on Good Times and also guest starred on the 70s live kids shows The Ghost Busters, The Lost Saucer, and Monster Squad [coming to DVD soon].

hola suban capitulos de este dibu me encanta!! quiero volver a verlo...
NADIE DA RAZON....BUSQUE POR TODOS LADOS....QUIZAS LO VIERON MUY RACISTA EL DIBUJO Y LO ELIMINARON
"Cohete destartalado despegando!!!"

I know damn well that I’m not the only one that came here from double toasted.
Please put out the dvd!
I meant: Warner, relesse This on dvd
Rickety Rocket was my favorite cartoon....after the marriage the honeymoon. I'll be damn gag me with a spoon. Who like Popeyes Alice and goons?
Alice "the" goon
FUBU a clothing line w/ Fat Albert. I was thinking about making a clothing line w/ Rickety Rocket!
Back then, when people were actually tolerant of ideas. Must have taken a couple of acid trips. Nowadays, people are scared.
Ninjas In Space...
Rickety Rocket ! Sounds like Captain Planet ! ( Ted Turner)
Nailed it. My feelings exactly. I can only hope its inexplicable self-awareness allowed to fully experience the pathetic nature of its existence before its inevitable structural failure and devastatingly explosive impact.
The transitional sequence was cool, though. It's like a bull's eye with a pair of R's steadily zooming in.
Nah, bruh. Even as a kid this was...off to me. Like, even in the future, they gotta ship made out of trash...with big ol lips.🤨
It's the jestons, speed buggy that fly and fat albert in one I remember watching this on boomerang I like it too bad it only 16 episodes I see why it didn't last long
To me is a Futuristic verson pf Speedy Buggy
@princesstamika It basically was a Hybrid Speed Buggy and Fat Albert!
This show is NOT online at all.
It kinda looked like a future version of a clubhouse to me.
Commenters shouting racist even though it's not in 3, 2, 1
Lol.
i still kinda liked the show...
Definitivamente era una época única para las caricaturas. ahora todas las caricaturas dicen mil groserías y no son tan divertidas...

Rickety Ratchet!

Actually Ruby-Spears got somewhat better "Goldie Gold and Action Jack" with Sam Rockwell Goldie Gold's Editor-In-Chief
Can't say I ever saw this, but the name is familure. Todays saturdays are lame by comparison to what we had as kids, Scooby Doo, Road Runner and Coyote, Bugs Bunny, Justice League etc.
I dont remember this cartoon.
I must of been watching Bugs Bunny when this crap was on.
what the fuck?
Most of the Ruby-Spears cartoons were anti-educational.
Awwwww hell nawwwww!!!!!! wtf?!?
How about we laugh about the absurd racism, realize it’s a product of the times, be grateful that we as a country are evolving into something better and move on.
Yeah, they were cooler.
It got worse every second….
I'm sure they probably said "How about Speed Buggy except with a Rocket and some black kids?"
Cause Fat Albert was popular.
