I grew up in Duluth. It gives me a thrill to see a beautiful ship like this depart every time.

Great video of her. I love seeing her but don’t get to see her very often. I remember watching a video from about 15 years ago I think by the Duluth news on here. It was the season opening and there were I think 3 ships stuck in the ice and they asked the Mesabi captain to go out and break through the ice to free them. He told his crew to give her all they got. She was doing 12 knots by the time he got under the bridge and down to 2 heading out in the ice but she made it through and freed them. 1,000 foot of steel, 60 tons of iron ore and lots of momentum wasn’t going to stop her said her captain. It’s a great video to watch.

That's a gorgeous view looking over the shipway toward the west. I love the way the land rises forming that knoll. Puts you in mind of pictures of Istanbul.

Just for some context, a standard railroad hopper car can transport approximately 100 tons of coal. That means it would take 680 rail cars to move the same load of coal that this ship can transport. Railroads normally move coal in trains made up of nothing but coal hoppers, 100 hoppers per train powered by a minimum of two 4000 horsepower locomotives on flat ground though that can increase depending upon the steepest grades to be travelled over.
Tractor trailer trucks might handle 40 tons.
Tractor trailer trucks have a gross weight of 80,000#, which means the cargo capacity would be about 42-44,000 lbs. payload.
Trucks in Canada can haul more. They use A and B trains (2 trailers).
Gotta be one of the only ports in the world where you get a live narration of an outbound vessel..

My cousin, got a great video of the same or ship headed out a few years ago. His were a bit more dramatic though. The slop was coming five feet over the pier wall on the Duluth side. It flooded the whole parking lot. Ill see if I can find it. Gitchee Gumee is dangerous lady!
That second captain's salute almost blew me away! How come it was so much powerful?

What's the average and fastest round trip times for a ship going to Detroit or further -- I make the distance at about 2462 km's or about 1530 miles. At a constant 14kn (16.1mph 25.9kmh) that distance could be covered in about 95 hours but with places that require going slower and other obstacles you could easily add another 10 hours and a couple days in port it should be possible to cover that route in about 6.3 days. Of course, I'm guessing on cruise speed and obstacles -- you'd have to ride one to know all those things. The Great Lakes and Superior in particular can be beautiful one day and the gates of hell the next...

About four years ago while on Maui we were told the resort had to close the beach due to high waves coming ashore. I grabbed my tablet and showed them video of 40 to 45 footers hitting the Duluth area the previous week.
Were they impressed? Hope Maui was fun!

It really did not make my wife happy having to drive me into the big town on the island to get new glasses. The old ones are likely still on the bottom of Napili Bay. And one thing nobody ever mentions about getting tossed in the surf along the shore. You wind up with about three pounds of sand inside your suit.
The one beach I would have liked to visit is the one on Ohau where they shot the scene in From Here to Eternity when we were on another trip. You have to work your way down a steep cliff or hill side to get there.

First salute was a Captains Salute from the Ship, the 2nd was the Bridge reply.

Coal fired plants are actually quite efficient and totally reliable. It’s only due to the Government shouting about “climate change” which causes people not to like them.

I didn't know coal plants still existed. Its a old school way to make electricity but the USA does a lot of things oldschool, looks like its behind a lot in time.
There are some legacy coal plants still operating in the US; however I doubt that any new ones are being built. With the increase in the price of natural gas, a coal plant with emissions equipment can still be profitable; it just depends upon the coal/ natural gas price differential. What I find interesting is that it is economical to ship coal to Detroit by water. Usually western coal is shipped from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming by rail directly to its end user point, in this case Detroit. Sometimes the rates charged by local rail are so high it makes it economically feasible to rail the coal to Duluth and then transfer it to water for a direct off load in Detroit. Good way to put your local trunk rail system out of business.
@@scottspilis1940 China is building coal fired plants at a fast pace. And they aren't clean plants with scrubbers like ours, just dirty old coal plants. Europe will freeze this winter because of their foolish 'green' policies that short sighted American politicians are promoting here. California with all the green initiatives is having brown outs because of this foolish and infantile policy. Americans need energy and will suffer greatly because of emotional fools. Windmills and solar panel are intermittent sources at best. And lithium batteries are an ecological nightmare promoted by grifters. Old techno lead acid batteries are totally recyclable. Fools are leading a parade to the caves for you while your betters fly private jets around the world to conferences demanding you live with less.

Then nothing but volcanic eruptions emitting more Co2 and Sulphur in the atmosphere than we can possibly burn ourselves. It’s called weather.
