One should always get the floorstanders of any high end series Andrew Jones makes. At the high end, his floorstanders contain both sonic benefits of floorstanders and bookshelves. The bookshelves sitting on stands consume the same footprint anyway! If one were to add a sub in the future, it would integrate a lot better with the floorstanders. And yes, they are more expensive. than the bookshelves!
I thought the Buchardt S400 were the best speakers of the year! ... with all the praise from Thomas, Zeos, Zero and even yourself during Q & A comparing them to the Kef LS50’s. Maybe it was another hype train. We need clarification! Maybe a comparison talk of why and HOW the Velas took out the title instead of the beloved S400s

I agree with you. I tested many speakers within 1200-2500€ price range. These were clearly the best to my ears. Sounded more realistic & natural than say KEF R3 or LS50 (wireless). Side by side the Elacs sound just more pleasing and warm but still very clear & natural. I paired them with Hegel H90 and could not be happier. They go deep enough with the bass, I listen to acoustic jazz a lot. But the mids & high mids are what they really stand out. Ella Fizgerald really came to my living room. Highly recommended.

@@oskarjennische2490 I had focal aria 906 and drove them with ps audio m700 paired with a rel t5i to fill in the low end and found them to be more forward sounding then the vela.The vela bs403 I have had for 4 months now and am really happy with them. Wider soundstage, cleaner midbass, with more air all around. I did miss the very detailed top end of the focals at first, but now i can listen without getting any fatigue. So I think these are a good jump up in overall performance.
An what about the upper mid low treble area ? I can not stand for any brightness or forward souind in this area preffering more relaxed & deep.. Personally i like a slightly stronger/warmer low mid/ upper bass and strong airy upper high. Do you think the 403 would suit my taste and how would you describe the pressence` region ?
I have these speakers and totally agree with everything you said. Before buying them, I tried a set of B&W and Martin Logan. ML was what I wanted but the positioning was a problem in my room so opted to get the ELACs, which I love. So much air in the treble.
The Vela BS403 is $4500 in Canada I know as I purchased it.Jays review is quite accurate.The speaker is very natural sounding.It plays big is very dynamic with fast punchy and deep bass.I do not find the bass lacking whatsoever.This is a special speaker and one that will stay.I use a line magnetic 518ia 845 tubes based SET amp thats only 22 wpc but thats from a 845 tube.There beasts and tube power is far beyond solid state when it come to numbers.It drives them better than my Naim superuniti which is a very powerful naim 80watts.I highly recommend these speakers.Well done Elac
Just subbed! Love Elac, i’ve had several, but been happy with my FS247 Black Editions ever since they came out. Elac is the most underrated speaker company out there. Nothing comes close to the them in the high-end medium/budget segment (at least not 5-10 years ago). Amazing review. I remember first time I heard a pair of Elac speakers waa blown away. The sound that came out of the speakers was hard to believe compared to speaker size.

I'm in the market, and like so many others below I too would like to get your take on how the 403s stack up against the 407 AND the 409. I've heard the 407, and it's brilliant. It crosses over at the same 2400hz as the 403. But I wouldn't mind going for the 409 if it maintains the same mid-upper frequency "sound" as the 407/403. The crossovers are set much more differently on the 3-way vs the 2-way. My fear is that the 409s are going to "lose" something with those different crossover settings.

Thanks for your clip! I had listend to this 403 and had the chance to compare it to the new Carina FS 247.4. I know that was not fair because of volume difference. As you explain the Jet5 is very brilliant in sound but for rooms (25-30qm) the BS 403 is to weak without a subwoofer. There the Carina blows it away in deepness. That was the reason I decided myself to go with Vela FS 407. But regarding other equipment stuff in my living room we decided for white color. So only 5 days left to get it at home. The Design of Elac Vela is absolutely fantastic!

You have compared the Vela with the Kef ls50 and the Buchardt s400 which are cheaper speakers than the Vela, and well you might expect that the Vela sounds really better. Elac is German and I highly doubt they choose Norway (one of the most expensive countries on earth) to make their speakers ;) Hegel, however, isNorwegian and made in Norway ;) great reviews btw!!!!

I've been looking for a worth while upgrade from the kef ls50s. I do like a speaker with good highs. Would these speakers be a significant enough of an upgrade to justify the purchase? Also, how well would these pair with a Hegel h190. I sense it would pair well but any input would be appreciated.
maybe try the unity audio boulder mk2 :) use the elac coaxial midrange and made of granite but active... there are other speakers you might want to try like lft16a, some estats.. maybe kingsound princess II + their supertweet or newer kingsound models... or soundlab etc.. from the way AMT is made it tend to have second order distortion that make them sound good but not true to the source.. it also have imd distortion.. most "audiophile" want second order distortion because their tracks mixer/mastering engineer suck and didnt add it in the recording.. you dont want any type of added distortion if you listen to rightly mixed electronic music since the producer/mixer/mastering engineer add it himself and try to use speakers without any type of distortion to monitor what he is doing. you are better with a tube buffer after the dac that you can add on badly produced/mixed/mastered tracks..
@ Duncan - well spotted, I didn't even give those a second thought. They would decouple the speaker from the stand, hence ideally reducing any vibrations coming from the stands into the speaker cabinet.
Are they really forward man? I really hate how distant mids sound on my HD800S headphones so when im gonna buy bookshelfs i need no hole in mids. I really like mid centric sound or something that just dont lack that. Thanks.
The vela bs 403 are $4500.00 in Canada.I know because I own them.Jays spot on there a sublime speaker and I find the bass not lacking whatsoever.Fill a medium size room with full natural sound
'Airyer' than the Adante? That is rather impressive in that department imo. Lovely looking speaker for sure, great review, Elac smashing it outta the park! Edit = 3.7k out here. Not too crazy, given prices of some other competitors. For example, exactly the same price as the navis....sure one powdered, one not....Adante roughly 1k more. Cheers
@Fat Rat Hey Wombat, nope (but I know them well)....I have the Elac Navis. I needed a more compact system whilst I'm up North. Main rig in storage on the Sunny Coast. So, no physical media...just under 4tb of mostly flac files, some higher res/dsd. My albums (~2500) & cd's (~3000) all locked away. That said, I basically stopped playing cd's quite a while ago & would mostly play vinyl. The Adante are very 'airy', beautifully detailed, but really need a sub to my way of thinking. So a dream if you're only into acoustic music, female vocals etc. Unfortunately, that's certainly not me. Cheers!!

I do call music my passion...now immersed in the digital world, with everything on a NAS etc. It automatically mirrors (so no need for syncing), but from time to time I'll back that up on a portable outboard drive. Would be a disaster to lose all my music.

Nature of ribbon tweeters is that the sound field is narrow. Not your everyday speakers if you are listening them from the side. You need to be in front of them.
He really really wants to review the 407/409 😉 I had the older fs 407 great speaker but it had that bright sounding treble you talk about . But awesome bass . You have young ears so if you say these new speakers aren’t bright I may have a chance as I hate bright speakers.

Just use real hockey pucks, lot less money and do the same thing.

The vela bs 403 are $4500.00 in Canada.I know because I own them.Jays spot on there a sublime speaker and I find the bass not lacking whatsoever.Fill a medium size room with full natural sound

3.7k out here. Not too crazy, given prices of some other competitors. For example, exactly the same price as the navis....sure one powdered, one not....Adante roughly 1k more.

@Fat Rat Hey Wombat, nope (but I know them well)....I have the Elac Navis. I needed a more compact system whilst I'm up North. Main rig in storage on the Sunny Coast. So, no physical media...just under 4tb of mostly flac files, some higher res/dsd. My albums (~2500) & cd's (~3000) all locked away. That said, I basically stopped playing cd's quite a while ago & would mostly play vinyl.
The Adante are very 'airy', beautifully detailed, but really need a sub to my way of thinking. So a dream if you're only into acoustic music, female vocals etc. Unfortunately, that's certainly not me.

@Fat Rat Haha.....and I've literally not bought a cd in 5+ years. I do call music my passion...now immersed in the digital world, with everything on a NAS etc. It automatically mirrors (so no need for syncing), but from time to time I'll back that up on a portable outboard drive. Would be a disaster to lose all my music.

If you close your eyes with the lights off, you won't see that the speakers are there - regardless if they're white, black or wood finish. :)
how do you like to review the S400 Buchardt and compare with this one?
@ Vu....this is a different price category (at least out here) and I assume sound that way also. The s400 sure is good, but isn't competitive well beyond its price range.

Nature of ribbon tweeters is that the sound field is narrow. Not your everyday speakers if you are listening them from the side. You need to be in front of them.

But awesome bass . You have young ears so if you say these new speakers aren’t bright I may have a chance as I hate bright speakers.
