  • From the heart of Athens, Christiane Amanpour sits down with former U.S. president Barack Obama, who has devoted his post-presidency to strengthening the foundations of democracy at home and abroad. Six years since the end of his second term in office, there is compelling evidence worldwide that democracy is wavering. The former president is raising the alarm and calling on his foundation to celebrate the next generation of democratic leaders. In an exclusive conversation with Barack Obama in Athens’ SNF cultural center, Christiane asks the question: Will democracy claw its way back?

So so so much else we should expect from a leader on this type of platform, in terms of substantive ideas, thoughts, and dare I say proposed or even suggestions for solutions. What we're served with here by the former president are more hyperbolic platitudes I'm left very disappointed from this five minute clip, but not shocked at all. The "fight" for democracy posited here can only be in the form of a complete revolution bloody revolution that latter boomers like myself were politically sanctioned to at least begin, but failed to take up. To Ms. Amanpour, still my complete respect and captivated devotion. Thank you and God bless.

You know it's starting to look to me like the ideal of democracy is becoming as hard to implement as the ideal of free markets. Actual free markets don't exist in real life. They are an academic construct used as a tool to try and understand human economic behavior. But we still try to create them when we get the chance. Pure democracy really doesn't exist either. Most people don't know who their congressman is, or the state assemblyman. But we still like to think that by voting our needs and wishes are being heard. I doubt it. (Big donors wishes are being heard.) So real life attempts at democracy are messy and imperfect. But what's the alternative? Authoritarianism? Oligarchy? Monarchy? I guess we'll just have to learn to be happy with the mess.

Pure democracies (and I'm guessing you mean direct democracies) might not exist, but there are systems of government much more representative and democratic than our own (assuming you mean the USA). The USA is unique among developed democracies in that the upper house of our legislature has far more power than any of its counterparts abroad. Moreover, the senate is incredibly unrepresentative of the population as a whole. That far moreso than money in politics is why policy is so far removed from what people actually want.
We do not "have to learn to be happy with the mess". We can think critically about our constitution and this nation's founding and instead demand a one-person-one-vote democracy.

The first thing you need to do is determine what constitutes a democracy, and that is an intended pun, because to constitute means to form or assemble, and the only thing formed and assembled by the Constitution of the United States is congress as a legislative assembly of the States governed by legislative processes to reach a majority consensus of all the States as the Union.
Next you must understand that democracy and government are not a competition which can be won, it’s about consensus choice to make collective decisions, and cannot be assembled by competitive partisan elections to determine the composition and control of our governing institutions, the composition and distribution of power through rights of suffrage must be, and is, specified unalterably by the Constitution of the United States, and it’s was designed to account for population growth and migration between the States, but the Senate where the States are assembled as equals with equal suffrage to reach a majority consensus, a discrete democracy, was designed for continuity and stability of government, legislative checks and balances, and to be free of corruption and conflicts of interest related to party affiliation.
Congress is n assembly of the States to meet to discuss matters of a common interest, only the States are members of Congress, only the States are apportioned representation and suffrage to participate in the legislative processes of congress, only the States can reach a majority consensus of all the States for assent to make any choice or decision, improperly consolidating the representation and suffrage of the States in congress to determine composition and control of our legislative institutions, especially the Senate, is totally unconstitutional as it violates Articles 1 and 2 of the Constitution of the United States.
We have divided, partisan, dysfunctional government because we assemble divided, partisan, dysfunctional government. The parties are not members of the Union, the parties are not members of congress, the parties are not apportioned representation and suffrage to participate in the legislative processes in congress to reach a bipartisan majority consensus. The two party is an abomination that we should no longer tolerate.
A democracy is a legislative assembly, the republican forms of government are legislative assemblies, and the united States, in congress assembled is a legislative assembly, making our system a legislative system of government governed by legislative processes to reach a majority consensus of all the States as the Union and Established Government Authority, the Union which makes our Government the United States of America, and as such the legislative authority necessarily predominates, every civil officer up to and including the President of the United States serves the Union, which is assembled in Congress!
That’s where you will find our democracy, not in your imaginary political monopoly house rules of what constitutes a democracy!
