  • Known worldwide for her courage and clarity, Christiane Amanpour has spent the past three decades interviewing business, cultural and political leaders who have shaped history. In conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Amanpour discusses fake news, objectivity in journalism, the leadership vacuum in global politics and more, sharing her wisdom along the way. "Be careful where you get information from," she says. "Unless we are all engaged as global citizens who appreciate the truth, who understand science, empirical evidence and facts, then we are going to be wandering around -- to a potential catastrophe."

    It's quite hard to filter out the crap without disrupting free speech... It's up to us, ourselves to see the whole picture ourselves by reading much more information from all sides with critical methods of thinking.

      Vincent Yeah, where there are ill-informed peoppe, it doesn't work well; whereas countries with well-educated people, like European countries, it works.

      The problem is that people develop a certain mindset when reading specific news sources and tend to stick with sources that perpetuate that way of thinking. It gets more and more difficult for people to challenge their views, because the willingness to do so diminishes in a world that becomes more polarized by the day. Another problem is that algorithms in search engines will prefer suggestions that cater to your individual views.

    Associated Press, Reuters, PBS, BBC, The Telegraph, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Economist, Fortune, Nature, Science Magazine,& Nat Geo. There you go - a list of reputable centrist, center-right,& center-left sources ranging from politics to economics to science. It's really easy to gauge bias and reputation there's no excuse for using extremely biased, fake, or click bait sources

    Only real way is to learn the fundamentals in a lot of different subjects, and then you can start to infer if something seems off and check multiple sources. Taking bias into account.
    There are no short cuts here and no simple answers. Simple is for those who don't understand the concept of responsibility.

    • @purrrbot
      @purrrbot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because as global citizens it's our job to hold journalists and people in power to higher standards and accountability. If you simply give up on the truth, you give into and become complicit with a false narrative and reality. Very few times in history has the truth been factually presented without bias or agenda - humans by nature are incapable of being explicitly objective. You have to make the effort to double, triple-check your information from a number of sources - not just from your two favorite echo chambers. What are the similarities between this information being presented on local, national, and global news sources? Find the consistency in information. What are the common denominators? That is the closest you will get to learning the facts.

    • @higgins382
      @higgins382 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot tell fake news by 'feeling', that is silly. If someone displays a lack of knowledge, why would I believe what they say? I don't make opinions on subjects I know little about, and neither should others. There are too many poorly educated people who believe in the videos uploaded by the ignorant, or those with their own agenda. The spreading of Fake News' muddies the water, when it is clarity we need.

    • @ichmemyself6098
      @ichmemyself6098 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keith Graham We need clearity to be able to fight fake news, I agree with that. But don't focus too much on details, it is much more helpful instead to get the essence of what was said. It is not a question of fake news whether she confused algorithm with logarithm, and made an effort to cover that up in a more or less charming way.

    How can any intelligent human say this women isn't bias to one side. I would challenge you to look deeper than what is said on the surface. She works for CNN, which constantly spreads one-side media coverage and only represents one side fairly. Half of these CNN anchors are power chasing people who only seek more popularity and have no integrity to actually say the truth or what is needed to be said. She has nothing of value to say that isn't funded by a political party. Think critically beyond what is said for a certain agenda. There isn't a lot of free news that is worth taking in. I agree with her, go to her on good TRUSTED branches of news and have a wide range of coverage, but do not go to this women for the truth.

    People aren't able to separate facts from opinions. Journalists need to just report the facts and refrain from commentary.

  • @shineemonkey19
    @shineemonkey19 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Because news usually reflect an opinion and not a fact. Thus news then wouldnt it always be 'fake' then. If we consider only facts as real then wouldnt almost all news be fake since they always reflect an opinion be it from the journalist or the news agency it comes from.
    However when it boils down to authenticity, who then can challenge Amanpour's authenticity but Amanpour herself. It is her opinion and her ideas and her experience. It is true to herself so who then can challenge her unless u know and understand her opinions better than herself.
    I an not defending her but simply stating my opinion. My opinion isnt a fact. Its an opinion just as how most news articles are, whwther obvious or not they always perpetuate the subtle if not obvious opinion of the writer.

    OK I have given this 2/3 of a view .. and already see flaws .. One dangerous thing that the internet has taught me is to be critical of all information even that coming from people that taut they have 50 million degrees behind their names .. which only means that they are good at following instructions and memorizing information . Understanding and Wisdom cannot come by degrees .
    First of all the problem I have with their point on Islam and no one should be slaughtering or genociding anyone ,, But because different customs .. traditions .. and lifestyles habits are necessary to people living in different parts of the world in different climates and terrains ... the world does need some boundaries in place as someone living in a climate where vegetation is available all year around .. might not always be able to understand someone living in a climate with short growing seasons .
    Example .. " The white man is greedy" Many of the tribes of fair complexioned poeple have lived in the colder and more hostile climates .. It was important to them to learn how to store and preserve food .. As fresh supplies were not always going to be available .. and because that window of opportunity for vegetation was limited .. they have to intensely labor .. get it while the getting is good .. So that is in the DNA of most fair complexioned people . No they are not greedy .

    • @Lamplighter4712

      Why is it only mentioned when Christians go wrong .. and yet we totally overlook the other side .. It does not make the news that Islamic Extremist tore through a school in Africa slaughtering Christian students .

      Climate Change ... I have learned that the world has been going on through this for billions of years and how much human activity affect it remains to be seen . But it is total nonsense to think that the corporations do not want to change and move away from Fossil fuels .. Fossil fuels are very expensive to extract . High Rate of injury .. and dangerous jobs .. they pay out much every year in workman comp for serously debilitating injuries to workers in these fields .. Renewable energy is cheaper to make .. much safer to work with and in many cases the cost is almost zero .. pure profit .. and the process of converting to these forms of energy will be a huge bonanza of profits for the corporations .. but the tactic is to scare the people into the need for change .. then gouge the prices of conversion equipment sky high .. to they can rake the public of its resources and monies ... so there is the game .. So there is what is behind the climate change propaganda .

      I learned to question even the World Health Organization . I am old enough to remember when they put out the news everywhere that these baby formulas were superior to human breast milk . And now we see a generation with serious health problems and obesity in part because of sluggish digestive system and improper metabolic functions .. so no entity .including for profit science should be dictating to the public anything .. including no forced religions and so on ... as people should maintain the right to make up their own minds .. and even question the science .

      +Theresa Franklin - The white man's specialty is war. That's why his Pentagon rules the world.

    • @Lamplighter4712

      That is another untruth . The whitemans pentagon does not rule the world . White people of european descent are largely a minority . China owns us all . But one becomes specialty at war because one if they were to survive they had to endure many attacks . They learned from their enemies .. but nope another propaganda misconception is that the white man rules .. never has and never did .. but needs to be sure that the world thinks he does .

    My goodness. this woman has no shame talking about "FINDING TRUTH" Perhaps she is not sharp enough to recognize her own biases and goes on talking. One questions the wisdom of those who really seek her opinions on world politics. can't they see that she is full of it? One wonders the reasons she gave herself to pursue journalism. we have watched her biased bla blas. Just watch her. Wherever there is a civil or arms conflict,like vulture she is drawn to it. Not for finding the truth and reporting the truth but a calculated reportage to please the system that has allowed her to be in public eye. The world seems to accommodate such characters and she is taking advantage of it at the expense of fooling the uninformed public. This Amanpour character is not a pleasant one to get to know. Maybe as a nanny or a housekeeper and nothing more. There are so many unadulterated souls about but the corporate world hires such marionettes. Great shame. She is trapped in fake news paradigm. As she loves to use such phrases to satisfy her ego and psyche. What a piece of work she is. You say you 'refuse to be accomplice to genocide' What a great nonsense. When youwere reporting on Sarajevo, did you dare condemn the West for its barbarism?, you fool? Enough already. You bring shame to liberated honest and thinking mankind. But I guess you being a shameless creature, you couldn't care less as long as you are employed by your puppet masters.

    Here I have a simple question from Mrs. Amanpour and hope to receive an honest & correct answer from her. I know since she criticized the Iranian regime and supported the Iranian demonstrations against them and also some of her critical comments against Russia, then her job position and also her fame has been increased all over the US & etc.... Here are my questions: Mrs. Amanpour, if you believe that you are living in a free & democratic country, will you dare to criticize the demonstrations against the Iranian regime and also the CIA's involvement in those protests? Will you ever support the Iranian leader? Will you tell the truth and criticize the American involvement in the Ukraine and also criticize the American Empire's military basis around the world & etc?

    Don't pretend journalistic integrity is without question simply because you're pursuing truth. There are truths on both sides of any issue and bias is choosing which ones to propagate and which ones to suppress.

    Yeah. This is not the TED Talk I was hoping for. Bummer. I shut it off at 4 minutes. Just because there is a consensus does not make something truth. Sorry. Truth goes much deeper than that. Just like Jack Nicolson said in A Few Good Men , "you can't handle the truth!" We as humans avoid the real truth because we cannot handle it.

  • @Lamplighter4712

    and to show TED that we out here do have a brain here is another factor . Even thought renewable energy has many advantages here are some disadvantages . As we have seen already .. Nuclear Plants can be very dangerous .. and destructive in natural disasters damage them .... Solar power in a huge way could increase the levels of UV rays and radiation .. just have to see if that will be the case ... Wind power and Water power are probably the best way to go .. and to put the generator onsite of the buildings is the best way .. as it will cause less damage to the terrain and wild life . These so called wind power farms and such are going to be wasteful in the end as they take up space that could be used for farming and such .. and eventually the birds and wild life will adjust to their presence .. but it is better to create the generators on the houses and building and then hook them into a grid and simply create power storage places in various areas .. That way if there is an power outage .. alot of people will not be effected if they can maintain their right to switch of the grid and produce their own power .. but these projects again are about leaderships need to control the population .. they lack knowledge and faith that the cosmos will control this and give us the best outcomes in the end .
