  • On this episode of StarTalk Radio, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are back exploring the depths of the cosmos in a follow-up to Cosmic Queries - The Deep. In this second part, we get even deeper and go even further into the mysteries of the universe.
    We start with the age-old question: which came first, the chicken or the egg? Neil gives us the definitive answer. But then we expand the question even further. Which came first: space itself or the Big Bang? This inspires Chuck to come up with a word to describe “something that is nothing”. You’ll hear about the history of the multiverse theory. Neil tells us why Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics don’t “get along”.
    We explore the rules of quantum mechanics. Find out if light itself can get spaghettified at the event horizon of a black hole. We discuss a simulation universe. And, if we are in a simulation universe, how would you explain the weather? Discover why everything in the universe is sphere-shaped and curvy. We ponder if the Big Bang created life itself. Neil explains why we shouldn’t look for life near stars and on planets that were around towards the beginning of the universe.
    We discuss dark matter. Neil gives us his thoughts on why it should be renamed to dark gravity. You’ll also hear why dark matter is still the longest unsolved mystery in modern astrophysics. We explore the nature of sunlight and how it travels to the Earth, the Moon, and how it interacts with both. All that, plus, find out why time stops at the speed of light.

      @@charlesemery615 In the "nothingness" of space, particles can pop into and out of existence (proven in the quantum world). I understand what you're saying though, maybe there was no space to begin with (?)
      I recommend you read about the early universe, before atomic particles like protons, neutrons and electrons formed. The energy/plasma at that early time could have created everything we see (and don't see) today. Remember ENERGY can be turned into MATTER and MATTER can be turned into ENERGY.

      @Tom Mears Still wrong. In fact what was there first is the big nothingness so to speak. After that stopped being this big nothingness. This is called the big bang as we all know. If we look at the big bang as a "thing" then we also have to accept the nothingness as a thing. Before we started existence as we know it right as we are now with everything that is in it there was nothing. A "state" that changed to being something cause by the big bang. But before that nothingness is truly nothing. Begs the question. Since there is nothing to have caused it... How did that big bang occure. An explosion as we know it needs chemicals reacting to each other to happen. So those had to be there as well to cause the big bang. Theoretically. But that is a question for another day!

    This video made my scientific life, I've been telling people for years that dark energy is a form of gravity from the interactions they use to measure it. Thank you, I play with thoughts of physics for fun all the time. This really helps me feel great about this unusual hobbie. Lol ive never read a book on physics or taken a class on it. But from watching and listening to the greats like Mr. Tyson, Mr. Hawkins, Mr Sagan and as many other as I can ive developed a deep understanding of the interaction of energy and matter and just find it so endlessly fascinating. Please keep making this program, I found this by trying to find a lecture or symposium peice from Mr. Tyson and discovered this amazing show. I don't have social media and use TH-cam for music, but I listen to at least 1 episodes a day well im processing things at work. Thank you for your contributions to science both know and classified. And having Chuck is amazing as well because his intellectual comedy make the entire thing more stimulating, tue gravity between the two of you make you greater force for spreading knowledge across our planet.

      @@stevenhossfeld9324 Me too haha. There is no concept of time at that speed, so a photon will not even experience time; you know what I mean? The question how long did it took me to get here has no meaning at that speed. For humans however, we will never reach the speed of light, because it requires matter to become energy (E = mc^2) and only then the concept of time is gone. Humans will maybe get near the speed of light and therefore your clock keeps ticking at a normal rate in your own point of reference (inertial system).

    Greetings, I am Asabele Sabelo, an undergraduate at UKZN doing my BSc in Applied Math and Physics. I love your show, or as I like to call it, "The fountain for curious minds." What if actually light and time had the same speed and light relative to time is not moving, but with our scale of how time passes, we see the light traveling at 2.998*10^8m/s? hence what you said the photon perceives its journey from the sun to us, on Cosmic queries the deep part 2.

    Side note on the why photons don't "lose heat in space" question, the photons that hit us don't make contact with anything that they would be transferring "heat" into, it's when they make contact and are consequently absorbed that things heat up, but the travel from the sun to the earth is uninhibited by anything or else they wouldn't reach us in the first place

    • @21972012145525
      @21972012145525 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacob Smith why does it take 8+ mins to reach us? Shouldn’t it be instant like how the photon experiences it

    • @Mr.Smitty420
      @Mr.Smitty420 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Time is relative to your frame of reference my friend, the speed of light is a constant and so time dilation occurs stretching it longer and longer as you approach light speed and actually reaching light speed has time not passing around you

    • @21972012145525
      @21972012145525 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jacob Smith so there is no one true time? To humans the suns energy takes 8 mins?

  • @ArkVogel

    5:20 a totally blind person online once had this excellent analogy when asked what he actually sees that kinda fits here; true blindness is like trying to look through the back of your head or through your elbow. There’s “nothing” because there’s no medium (ie retinae and nerves) to transmit a visual signal. In the same way there’s no “medium” or background outside the Big Bang for things and time to exist. I wonder if a magical observer in that void would see our universe as just an unchanging blip that had already begun, ended and just left its mark all at once in that no-spacetime. Would it even leave a mark?

    What if dark energy is the anti particle to gravity?

    • @HustlinHugh
      @HustlinHugh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is a possibility, and I'm glad someone asked something about this topic because I have a hypothesis also... ok, we all know about solar wind and pressure etc... right? well what if it's just so strong that it's countering the matters gravity of each individual system, and pushing each away from the other. I only see one issue with this though, not ALL systems/galaxies are moving away from one another, but what if thats just due to the variability of the solar wind/pressure (as the star gets coronal holes and sun spots it changes the pressure and speed, and shape of the "pressure") I really think we are just overlooking something we already know about. Thoughts?
      As for Dark Matter, that is coming to an end, we have found more matter out there that we never seen b4, and it keeps growing. Not to mention the Simulation of a universe Without dark matter was done and was more accurate than the Dark Matter model... We really need a revamp of our sciences... You should invite Brian Greene on the show sometime again, Niel, Chuck, and Brian :) would have to be "The Deep, pt.3" ;)

  • @TheOldHippiebilly

    I'm still laughing at the idea that the mystery of dark matter (black gravity) will be solved by Cosmic Cops implementing a "stop and frisk" policy in space.
