    Max Euwe became world champion because in 1935 he was simply the best player! He also had a daytime job as a school teacher, so he was not a pro like Aljechin. Makes it extra special.

    In defense of Alekhine, according to CM Sjtsjogoljev:-
    May 16, 2016
    In London 1922 all leading grandmasters including Alekhine agreed with Capablanca's proposal that a challenger for the world championship title should bring $10,000, of which $2,000 was for the world champion while the remainder was split 60% for the winner and 40% for the loser. Also the challenger needed to take care of all the traveling costs and so forth. These are known as the London Rules. It took Alekhine five years to get the money, where others like Rubinstein and Nimzowitsch failed to do so. For the rematch, Alekhine simply sticked to the same London Rules. Capablanca however now wanted different rules and arrangements, obviously rejected by Alekhine.

    Alekhine's not rematching of Capablanca gets a lot of unnecessary hate and it's not clear to me why. Capablanca himself didn't want to be challenged for the title either, and Alekhine actually had to work extraordinarily hard to come up with sponsorship money to fund the prize pool to contest Capablanca. He had set a ridiculous financial threshold he knew few players could ever overcome in order to deter challenges. If you ever see a game from an Alekhine blindfold simul in the early 1920s, guess what? That simul was probably given as a fundraiser to raise money in order to challenge Capablanca.
    Alekhine actually proposed a rematch to Capablanca, but demanded exactly the same financial terms Capablanca had demanded of him. Naturally, Capablanca was thereby deterred from rematching him, and despite formally challenging him, never did come up with the money. Alekhine thereby ended up choosing someone else, although again in fairness to the usual narrative, Alekhine did agree to play Bogoljubov without raising the required purse -- however, it really could be simply claimed as getting revenge on Capablanca for placing such financial obstacles in Alekhine's way in the first place. And to be fair, Bogoljubov was no slouch as a player, he was just inconsistent -- he did win a number of supertournaments, even coming in ahead of Capablanca sometimes, in the years leading up to their match. Really, karma is a bitch, if you demand $10,000 to play, be prepared for the next guy to charge you $10,000 too.

    Heyhey, Grandmister Finegold, you are the chess lecturer with the grumpiest sense of humour! :-) And I like your appreciation of Euwe too. Indeed a move like a3 against Fischer, the utterly normalest, ordinariest and simplest move possible, and at the same time so all devastating because of all that came before. Fischer also greatly admired the clear logic of Euwe's style. "There is something wrong with that guy. He is too normal."

    • @ysbrandd
      @ysbrandd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well in the Netherlands there is a saying, doe normaal en dan doe je al gek genoeg which means be normal and you'll be crazy enough. Idk if it was a saying back then already but it might be the reason.

    Very hard to choose between Euwe and Timman. Between 1985 and 1994, Timman played in four candidates tournaments in the knockout phase. Eliminated by Yusupov (early), Karpov (final), Short (final) then Salov (early). In 1993 Short and Kasparov broke off and FIDE decided to play their own world championship, between Karpov and Timman. Timman lost. Strong player and a close second behind Euwe.
    Euwe actually was a world champion and by all reports a very classy human being. I also really appreciated his writing style. He wrote some really accessible books for beginning and intermediate players. So I'll still give it to dr Max.

    Took me a while, but first game at 4:38 Bb6 loses, the correct move is Nb6 Kb8 Be5.
    Bb6 is met with gxh2 if Kh1 or g2 then Qc6+ picking up the second rook. If Kf1 then h1Q seems good, if Kf2 Qf7 picks up the second rook.

    @Jehag2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Euwe won, not due to alcoholism of Alekhine, but due to Alekhine's over-confidence. Yes, he did drink, but he wasn't an alcoholic at all. More importantly, you just can't beat Euwe in calculating, you just won't bluff him away. Before the match, even Alekhine called Euwe to be the best in the world in that respect. So, in the second match Alekhine thoroughly avoided over-confidence. He didn't bluff - and, yes, gave up all drinking, which made a difference too. He simply played better. And this time Euwe didn't play his best chess. So yeah, then Alekhine won the match.

    Haha, thanks Ben for calling out the idiots who will scorn you for 'mispronouncing a foreign name. I cringe when I hear Dutch people do that. We do it for two reasons:
    1. We don't have the problem of pronouncing foreign words incorrectly, because our native accent has almost all sounds.
    2. We are just more lame per capita than Americans.
    And thank you for this talk on Euwe! Very interesting and he deserved one.

    In the first game you analyze, after Bb6 "which is hard to meet" black could play gxh2+ Kf2 (else White have only white squares to put their King, and Black wins with Qc6+, winning the rook and the game, except for the Kf1 move which is will be seen soon) and then Qf2 + wins the whites rook and the game. The same is true for Kf1.

    • @possumverde
      @possumverde 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I really hope this isn't the case but...it may well have something to do with Alekhine's supposed collaboration with the Nazi's during WWII and the lecturer's last name being Finegold...(that's the only reason I can think of for someone to dis Alekhine that hard...)
      edit: There were some articles Alekhine "wrote" for a Nazi controlled Chess publication where he belittled the play of Jewish people. Alekhine claimed he was forced and that the editor added a great deal...

      I doubt he would harness bitterness against Alekhine due to political landscape of 40's and 50's. It's just his style to make fun of people in a harsh way. And while it's true that Alekhine just paid Capa back in kind, it's also true that he mostly sought matches against far weaker opponents.

    Some years after Capablanca lost the world title, Capablanca played Max Euwe then the new minted world champion, and beat him 6-4 in a match. I suppose you are right Capablanca beat up everybody, maybe you didn't say that.

    So Keres not taking the hanging knight in that game is the losing blunder. It's a shame you skipped over that entirely, because I think most people would snap that knight off without thinking. Even upon thinking for a bit I'd do it because it doesn't even look that scary - the queen has an easy enough time defending the 7th rank, and white will have a hard time mobilising their rook (and not doing it seems worse).
    Presumably he must have avoided it because he thought it led to a draw and he felt like playing for the win.

    Gary Kasparov isn´t nice? Hmmm but Ben Finegold is the nicest grandmaster/chessplayer? :) :) I guess then that I would earn a grandmastertitle for remembering Finegold-jokes. 1. It´s a discovered check because I discovered it! 2. I doublechecked it and it wasn´t check! :) :) :) :) :) Now when we talk about chessplayers who are natural born killers or should we say players with a killerinstinct then Robert James Fischer is the absolute number one. :)
