    It's taken me 3 weeks to get here and I generally practice one hour/day. Its fun, I love it. D7 was tough but I'm at about 80% accuracy now. Eli, this is great. Thank you.

    Hey Eli. I got a brand new banjo from a family friend at the start of quarantine, almost a year ago exactly. I play guitar and bass, but picking the banjo up was a whole different animal - I felt like I was picking up a guitar for the very first time (very frustrating). I bought finger picks but never used them. I tried learning some tunes (Cripple Creek), but no other TH-cam tutorials were teaching songs in a beginner-friendly manner. After a time, the banjo gathered dust.
    Fast-forward to a few days ago, and I came across your 30 day series. I decided to sit down and commit myself to completing this starter course. Despite being horribly awkward at first, I'm using fingerpicks. Your videos are amazing. Slowly introducing rolls and techniques and before I knew it, I can play Boil Them Cabbage Down at a pretty good pace. I'm actually making very fast progress and feeling more comfortable with the instrument.
    Psyched to start Cripple Creek now and eventually learn other tunes. I feel like I'll have a strong base after completing this course. This is a great way to start learning banjo.
    Just wanted to say thanks, and keep doing what you're doing!
    -Brett

    Finally, lesson 10. I had to stick around the last lesson for a while to get it down. This lesson was tough for me, it wasn't in the sense of understanding, it was just the fact I had learned cripple creek previously another way. The version in this was nice but I found it difficult to relearn as I've learned to play it the other way and I was used to it, so I found a compromise. I got the first part down, but I used the previous version in the 2nd measure, still sounds pretty nice. Thanks for the new lesson!!!

    There was a huge breakthrough once I had developed some actual calluses on my fingers. Things like sliding and actually getting good sounding notes become infinitely easier once you have tougher skin to work with.

    HI Eli. I'm really enjoying your work on this series. Very encouraging and applicable.
    Hope you don't mind if I point out that the tab displayed at 1:50 doesn't show the 4th beat of measure 2.
    Thanks again Eli.

    Not sure if you still read these comments, but in the beginning of the video it seems like you play the last two measures considerably faster than the first two.
    I got the first two measures down pretty well but the last two don't sound like yours at all.
    Thanks for the great lessons!

    I'm have great trouble with that 4th string. I look at it at the top frets, my eyes see a top string and my thumb automatically goes to the 5th string. So frustrating! They should have banjos with a fake 5th string for the first five frets. 😂 Lesson 10 is taking much more time than I thought

    Loving the lessons. One frustration is playing notes and deadening other strings. No matter how i try to position my fingers, i cant avoid touching other strings. I don't confess to having particularly fat fingers however they wouldn't be classed as 'sleek'. Any advice on technique???

    • @jimacheson
      @jimacheson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use fingertips, not the pads

    • @OnTheDLum
      @OnTheDLum ปีที่แล้ว

      Hopefully you figured out the technique but for those that haven't....
      1 make sure the banjo is pretty level meaning almost straight up and down. Try to not play at an angle. This will reduce your chances of muting or muddying a note.
      2 use the tips of your fingers. Number 1 will help with two. My hands are pretty big for this small instrument but practicing good posture and finding what works and sticking to it is the only way to make it normal and comfortable when playing an instrument.

    Just got to this lesson. I've been playing guitar and piano for 10 years so I kinda breezed through the first 9 lessons. For some reason the slide sounds really out of place going to the third fret. Like it's almost too flat and detracts from the sound. Is it just me.

  • @dougdillnerph.d.4684
    @dougdillnerph.d.4684 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quesiton: The first note is a pinch slide (2nd fret -5th fret) and the second seems to be a pinch, but in your video, you seem to only play the fifth string!!?? Am I seeing/hearing it wrong?
