You fellas probably already know this, but there's a technique Max Ernst (for one) used called decalcomania, where you press crumpled objects (paper or rags or) into your paint or ink and lift, etc, to create complex random textures and shapes. Ernst did some wild looking stuff using it.

I have been using that a LOT lately. Partly inspired by Breccia.

Yeah, that Picasso documentary is so cool, and he's drawing so large. I think that's also the one where he sometimes draws on glass and they shoot from the other side, or maybe he's drawing on a material that shows through, I can't remember exactly... I need to revisit it, I probably haven't seen it in twenty years or so.

@@clubgrubbugBe aware that unfortunately someone has put a different Picasso documentary on TH-cam that's falsely labeled as The Mystery of Picasso. The actual documentary The Mystery of Picasso is currently on The Criterion Channel, on Kanopy, and maybe elsewhere.

@@michaelavolioSean and I found one where he is painting and they film it from the back. Very cool.

@@clubgrubbug Do check out The Mystery of Picasso too - there's some footage in there where they film through the other side of the paper, so all you can see is the mark-making, and that's also cool to see.

Yeah, that Toppi experiment video was awesome and inspiring, and I think I may have found it in the first place when looking for videos about drawing with razor blades after seeing that Breccia razor blade video the first time...! This was cool - I love hearing you guys talk craft and technique. This "reacts" series is interesting and fun.
And Sean, you make an important point here - some people won't play with particular tools because of not having enough control, but that lack of control gives you something in return if you embrace it. (Though I don't recommend anyone embrace a razor blade in a literal sense. ;) ) I feel like maybe you and I touched on that idea during our few minutes together at SPX, but I can't remember what tool might've inspired us to mention that - maybe it was the scraping razor that Dino Battaglia used, or maybe I brought up the Toppi video... Anyway, there are whole worlds of mark-making open to us when we let go of the idea that we have to control every line.

I just started messing with those sponges on sticks they sell super cheap in art stores. Amazing inking tools!

@@clubgrubbug I've got some of those, but I've only tried them a time or two - I don't usually work large enough for those to make sense. But I want to play around with them more at some point.

I REALLY hope Fantagraphics gets to translating that one. One of my biggest book wants.

Something you guys might like for more 'LTL reacts' is Shonen Jump's Jump Ryu series. They were a series of DVD's that came out around 2010 that showed famous Jump creators working, talking about their careers and giving advice to aspiring mangaka. It's probably the next best thing to Manben. Theres a big playlist on youtube right now but the only one with a full translation thus far is Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama. I can already hear Carson groaning at that (lol), but come on, he's a pretty amazing cartoonist and it's worth watching him work even if you're not the biggest fan.

That sounds amazing. Thank you for pointing it out!
Actually, I have a complete DragonBallZ set on my shelves waiting to be read. I got it while Jack was here for the summer, read the first three volumes based on his promise that he would record episodes with me. When he copped out and put up a fit every time I said we should do a video I shelved the books for a later date.
it was surprisingly enjoyable, but i wish we had gotten DragonBall rather than DragonBallZ so I had full context. But, yes, great cartooning!

Mort Cinder stuff is lovely. I still need to read the others. Too bad they don't have access to his originals as the reproductions are very hit and miss.
