      He originally planned to do 6 volumes of Nod Away, but since releasing the second, I don't think he's done much work on the series, due to a mix of financial and personal issues, about which he's been quite open. The last thing I recall him saying is that he still hopes to see the series through, but he's not certain he will. He's also said that future instalments might be self-published.

    Great find Carson. And I'm very glad you had exactly the same idea as myself 😄! I thought about relocating to the countryside several years ago. I came to the realization that a city life made no sense at all- unless one has a high rolling career with very high earnings. I am still a couple of years away from getting my own property, but I am saving for it. It will be completely off grid, and also a hub for creativity and a base of operations for my publishing and YouTubing (we wont be able to print or ship inhouse though- that will be done elsewhwere in europe)

    • @clubgrubbug
      @clubgrubbug 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love hearing this, and that you hope for it to be a place for creativity is the best thing anyone could do with land. Make those sacrifices to save. It is SO worth it. And, be willing to move somewhere where this kind of thing is affordable! We could have never done this in CA. We are having such a hard time processing how truly enveloped in the simulation we were. A week out here and the slap in the face of REALITY has been so beautifully potent compared to the plastic shit that is feels surreal, which is so sad. This is supposed to be our default.

    Well done blokes, balancing the channel and the awesome releases (as well as your lives in general) is an impressive feat! As an aside, ‘Surviving on Mars’ was a one sitting read. Equal measure of laughter and heartbreak/depression, I’m not familiar with Brandon’s backstory on the lead up to this but I can guess without the details. Timely reminder (surely we don’t need any more reminders!!), that the social media pile on has real impacts on people and de-humanises us all a bit more each time. Is Brandon doing better with bouts of depression? I hope so, but I’m not asking. Brandon is still here with us, keeping on and getting the job done and that’s enough, actually it’s everything.

    I love Tardi`s crime books. You make a great point about his use of reference, I haven't really thought about the fitting-into-a-grid aspect.That's really true. I have traced photo reference in a pinch and was never really happy about it. It really goes against the whole point of cartooning for me, although of course some people have made it work before. As a rule of thumb I would advise against it.

    DBZ was a monumental work in terms of how much influence it still so visibly. So many major manga IPs were inspired by this. Specifically DBZ and specifically the stuff that is less appealing to you is what really is the core of DBZ that works. Dragon ball is more humorous and more of an adventure story, DBZ is a battle manga. You will enjoy Dragon Ball more, but DBZ is really what has had a massive global impact. Outside of sequential art too. Just Its presence on Toonami changed broadcast history and that was the biggest thing to have ever happened for manga in terms of making it known on a global scale. Thats part is basically talking about the zeitgeist of it. The only downside to this is when you repeatedly say he is bad at action. There's no polite way to put this, but I find that statement so ludicrous its almost grating. Its the action in DBZ which is what stood out and was inspired so many other manga.

    In my country soccer is the biggest thing and I ask myself what it is with soccer that everybody seems to be crazy about it. I don't get it, I don't think I ever will. I guess it's something people associate with fun and thrill since they were kids as they parents would usually be soccer fans too. (Mine weren't). I like Dragon Ball since I was 6 or 7 years old - I'm almost 40. It's probably my favourite nostalgia IP along with Ninja Turtles. It just has something special to it. When I was a kid in the 90s I would watch many afternoon shows in which characters would learn a lesson every episode and everything would go back to what it was at the beginning of the story. Dragon Ball wasn't that; it offered me continuity and an ever-changing world with characters that would evolve and grow up, as opposed to most other shows from the era. The characters grew on me and that's why I still feel attached to the franchise, although I've got to remind myself not to expect too much on terms of story with every new DB show or movie. I don't say that's all there is to like about DB -I really think Toriyama is a good storyteller, as you say, more of a comedy writer, and I really like the dynamic feel of his action scenes. Then again, I'm not sure I would have liked DB that much if I had discovered it at some later point in my life. I probably would have gotten more easily distracted by some of its mistakes and plotholes, many of which were a result of the whole thing being a story written week to week with not much of a plan. Or maybe I'd have liked it just as much. I don't know. I don't see any attraction in soccer matches but people seem to love them. Maybe you'll never figure out what's the reason for DB being so popular, and that's ok. I just hope you enjoy the journey to some extension!

    I enjoyed the series as a kid(the cartoon was at it's peak when i was 5-10 back in 01-06). I fully understand the appeal (including the appeal of the genre of japanese it pioneered). I compare it to superhero comics in the sense that a lot of people enjoy then mainly for the epic fights, wish fulfillment aspect, the power scaling, and constant melodrama. Toriyama had a lot of other charms to his work that elevated it(particularly the first half hahaha) but still. What I find even funnier is when people will decry superhero comics but then lionize battle shounen. I like all of this stuff(with a critical I of course haha).

    It wasn't till this video that I realised that I thought Jamie Hewlett and James Harvey were the same person xD Makes a lot more sense now that Jamie Hewlett didn't do the art for a small kickstarter boardgame about sex and consent.

    I just started watching the video, and I'm sure I'm going to enjoy it as usual. But I wanted to give you an idea of how these surnames are pronounced in their countries of origin: - Crepax is KRAY-packs (you do pronounce the x at the end); - the Breccia family of cartoonists is Argentinian (father born in Uruguay); the surname is of Italian origin, though, and the Italian pronunciation is BREttcha; in Argentina it's pronounced very close to the original; I think the way it's rendered in other Spanish-speaking countries might be something closer to BREtcheea, but I'm not sure. - finally, Micheluzzi is pronounced MickleOOtsee (for the last two syllables think of Tootsie) I hope this doesn't come across as too pedantic (and for the pedants, too imprecise).

    I've got the smaller edition of this, but man, this is a must-buy. It's by far the best visual adaptation of a Lovecraft story ever. The vision and the execution is stunning. And I'm glad you highlighted that spread with the fata morgana. I can almost feel the icy wind coming off the pages.

    The narrator is Micheluzzi himself who is talking to Marcel. He does it also on other books. This book is full of exquisite irony, the boobs showing as well. He is generally respecting and tributing the classics but also showing the naif stuff that was going on back then. All this in an intricate storytelling full of political and historical references. If you want something less strange and more "serious", then I think that Siberia or Bab-el Mandeb are the best.

      Huh... that did not come across at all. Maybe they should have released some other works first to familiarize readers with his approach. I was totally lost. The political and historical references are absolutely and totally lost in translation and will probably be lost to time as well. It is one of the major problems I have with this historical-political-thriller'ish, genre that is so prevalent in the European market. Reading books like that sound like the teachers from the Peanuts cartoons in my head, a bunch of adults gossiping like children about how they are all fucking the world up with their shitty managerial, meddling world view.

    Praxis usually has more specific intent than practice. That is why praxis is used to test ideals through practice.

      What would the difference between a practitioner of Buddhism and a Praxtitioner of Buddhism look like. Or in this case, a particular brand of socialism in practice vs in praxis. The bit about having a more "specific intent" is exactly what smells funny about it. A person who uses the word 'praxis' always just sounds like they think they are smarter, more committed, more clever, generally superior in some way, when really all they mean is practicw what you preach. As far as I can tell.

      @@clubgrubbug Socialism probably works for a better example. It would look like developing a theoretical framework on how it could or should work, then applying that to test it through Praxis. Generally, a follow up paper would be the goal so that the findings are then rooted in substantive data. Buddhism does break down because one should not be trying to change it, but being mindful and open to changing oneself. Although someone could probably make it work, it's outside of my scope. In art, and Literature, it is again about developing a theory on how it should work then creating works to test that theory and examine the results. Although, I do agree many people throw the word around meaninglessly because they think it makes them sound smart even when they don't understand it. I've met plenty of those.

      @@johnm.withersiv4352 Sounds like they are trying to apply the idea of the scientific method to things that cannot be treated as such; an ongoing social-engineering experiment that is an explicitly invasive, data-driven and meddling process led by the Praxtitioners? Noooo thanks. A Praxtitioner does the design, the experiment, makes the adjustments, tests again, etc. but the Practitioner only follows prescribed procedures? Is this viewed as a collective process? Have any non-Socialist theorists ever used the concept? Is there Capitalist Praxis? Or is that just 'Iterative Design' applied to social frameworks?
