'Pakistan's Manipulation Of The Pashtuns Maybe Coming To An End'

  • The Pashtun ethnic faultline running through Pakistan has acquired a dangerous new dimension. Islamabad's relations with the Taliban, a Pashtun force entrenched in Kabul since last year, has worsened with gun battles reported on their border. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan continues to attack the Pak army, exacting a grim toll and the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement agitating peacefully for human rights is gaining support.
In this conversation on The Gist, Tilak Devasher, member of the National Security Advisory Board, warns that it is only Pashtun disunity that has enabled Pakistan to exploit them in all these years. In his book The Pashtuns: A Contested History, he traces the roots of Islamabad's Pashtun policy and how it used Russia's invasion of Afghanistan to indoctrinate them with radical Islam.
But with the Taliban now in power in Kabul, Islamabad is facing a foe that has long memories of the many injuries it has inflicted. The Taliban is backing the TTP's violent campaign in Pakistan while also refusing to accept the fence along the Durand Line.
Tune in for more in this conversation with Tilak Devasher.

The history of the Pashtuns is ancient and much of it has yet to be recorded in contemporary times. From the 2nd millennium BCE to the present, Pashtun regions have seen immense migrations including Aryan tribes, such as Persians, Sakas, or Scythians, as well as Kushans, Hephthalites, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, and Mongols..

“ANP considered Punjabi elite as an imperial force and believed that Talibanization was a product of the Pakistani army’s neocolonial attempts to dominate NWFP" (TO LIVE OR TO PERISH FOR EVER” by Nicholas Schmidle, Henry Holt, NY2009). Original aim to defeat nationalist ANP was enlarged to milk dollars & achieve territorial gains. Both Afghan Taliban (TTA) & Pakistani Pashtun Taliban (TTP) were raised by ISI during 1st Afghan war (1979 -1989) to defeat infidel Communists & Punjabi groups were added to assist them. However, elated by the defeat of superpower USSR at the hand of their Jihadists & having secretly acquired nukes, wily Generals instead of disarming & rehabilitating Jihadists, used them to further their nefarious designs in complete violation of the 1988 Geneva Agreement.
In order to prevent turf war between Punjabis & Pashtuns, they united 14 Punjabi Jihadi groups to form United Jihad Council (UJC) & transferred them to Kashmir (Stephen Cohen). To fill the vacuum created by terrorists’ transfer, they infiltrated their own army men disguised as Taliban & captured Afghanistan to install puppet Taliban Govt. (1996-2001) to eventually make it 5th province of Pakistan. However, despite causing massive terrorists attacks, ethnic cleansing & finally direct Kargil infiltration, they failed in their territorial aims in J&K.
After 9/11, both Taliban found refuge in Pakistan. In order to eliminate threat to Pakistan from their presence & to trap US into protracted Afghan war to extract dollars, wily Generals armed Taliban to kill infidel Americans while secretly giving drone-bases to US to kill Taliban.
A large no. of Pakistani Taliban (TTP) got shelter in Islamabad’s Red Mosque & to their surprise found their own country totally un-Islamic with Chinese massage parlors, prostitution centers & obscene video parlors. They demanded Islamic rule in Islamabad & detained some Chinese but were brutally killed in army action.
Convinced about the hypocrisy of Pakistan army, TTP turned against its own masters but were branded as terrorists. Under the garb of eliminating terrorists, FATA towns were destroyed to give Punjabi Army depopulated fire-free control of Durand Line which was fenced in anticipation of friendly Taliban Afghan Govt. However, both Taliban now know Punjabi games & it is payback time for Pakistan

Surprisingly Mr. Devasher does not, straight off the bat, mention Rohillas (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohilla). Nor does he mention Ahmedshah Abdali. Nor the Lodi dynasty (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lodi_dynasty) which ruled from Delhi for over a 100 years. (He does mention these towards the end, giving them a very benign appearance).
We should forget the pishta badam. We should remember that historically, the Afghan was ready to take advantage whenever we were weak. Just because they are creating problems for Pakistan does not mean they are nice guys. They are susceptible to control by a particularly vicious type of Islam.
Take advantage of the situation but keep them at arms length.
And what is the point of talking about Gandhari, or Mahabharata, or Buddhism. Are we going to open centers for studies of Buddhism, in Kabul, or Kandahar? Too much punditry😡

for those whos claiming hindko indian or punajab because hindko native to nwfp well,Punjabi/Hindko migrants only lived within the walled cities of #Peshawar and #Kohat, not the entire regions as this map wrongly depicts. And Peshawari "Hindko" is closer to #Majhi than to #Hindko proper from Hazara (which is similar to Potohari/Pahari).Peshawari Hindko is basically Majhi (Lahori) with Hindko/Potohari influence.
Hko. = Hindko, P. = Majhi, Pe. Peshawari Hindko, they migarted from central asia into the north india and nwfp
