I have been a very amateur historian of ww2 for most of my life(80 years old), but this part of the Pacific war somehow escaped my attention. I was totally fascinated by this video. How I missed so many missions between Pearl Harbor and the Doolittle raids is beyond me. Thank you so much for filling in that gap. You guys amaze me.

This has been largely ignored by historians. There is a chapter on it in Pacific Crucible, by Ian Toll. Just read it today.

This is SUPER cool. I'm Marshallese living in the Marshalls and my traditional home atoll is Mili. 9:17 I think the importance of that near miss on the Enterprise cannot be overstated. The near miss caused a serious fire: Any better luck for the Japanese pilot, or any worse luck for the damage control team in putting out the fire, and the Enterprise would have missed both the Doolittle raid and Midway. The war could have been half a year longer.

    • @charlie8344

@@louievelayo4100 The bomb hit a gasoline line, so the fire was serious right from the start. The flight deck was splashed with gasoline all over the place. It was as close as you can get, and the Captain wrote in the after-action report that the Enterprise's escape "can only be described as miraculous".
So yes they managed it, but it was nowhere near as easy as you want us to believe.

@@korbendallas5318 That was shrapnel damage, not a direct hit.
Also and this was from the ship’s damage report:
“Although the fire seemed very threatening, it was soon extinguished with chemical foam from pressure-operated foam generators (phomene accumulators). By quick and effective use of the available firefighting apparatus, Enterprise repair parties successfully passed their first real test.”
The fire was confined to a very small external part of the Portside catwalk. As the report stated it while the fire seemed threatening it was bought under control and put out quickly.

I can see the animation style for the Star Wars videos over at Wizards and Warriors is coming in handy here 😊 I'm glad you got to making this video; you've mentioned the US Carrier strikes in other videos but they deserve their own video, owing to their importance to future events.
It's worth noting that of those two Wildcats who intercepted the second wave of Betties, one of them suffered it's guns jamming, so Lt. Butch O'Hare repulsed the attack practically by himself; a feat that would win him the Medal of Honor. Also, no mention of Bruno Gaido? 😞

It's always awkward when your war plan relies on inflicting extreme attrition rates, but the war basically starts with fairly even trades between planes. Good thing Japan had the back-up plan of killing POWs, and committing suicide, to help convince the US that negotiation was completely impossible, despite that being Japan's entire goal.

@@chamberlane2899 Japan didn't consider surrender until around the time of Operation Meetinghouse; before then, Japan wouldn't even consider the idea of negotiating before a major Japanese victory, which they tried to achieve in China while buying time in the Pacific.
And how could Japan consider surrender? The Japanese government was run by a group of militant extremists that literally grabbed power as a result of repeated assassinations in the 1930s: to even suggest surrender could be a literal death sentence. Even in 1945, with the US bombing Japan to ash, and a massive invasion poised from the south, Japan thought it could somehow keep some of its territory by negotiating through the Soviets.

    • @bubbasbigblast8563
      @bubbasbigblast8563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@chamberlane2899 After the Battle of Midway, Japan absolutely still believed it could gain more than it lost: I've never seen any indication that Japan was considering any kind of surrender, only a loss in gains it felt otherwise entitled to. The idea of defeat was still unthinkable.
It's self-evident: why waste resources on a massive campaign in South China if Japan was planning to give China up in a surrender? Why not fortify the home islands, such that the US could never hope to bomb Tokyo without unsustainable loses? Why did they leave the Emperor's palace entirely vulnerable to a US attack, if his safety was their greastest priority throughout the war?
It was because they still thought they could win: that, if they conquered China, the US would, for some reason, conclude that allowing Japan to keep some of its prizes was preferable to continued war. It was a delusion, just like how Japan deluded itself into thinking the USSR would negotiate a surrender on Japan's behalf, instead of attacking Japan from the north.

The early Pacific War I find most interesting. Like a boxer answering the bell Japan came out and landed a flurry of blows against the Americans. Knocked them senseless and had them on the ropes. This was close to the point where the Japanese believed that the US had their backs to the wall and would be afraid of further fighting and would cave in and sue for peace.
Instead the US starts punching back. And starts landing some blows. And doing so without the material advantage that assures victory in the future.
Japanese forgot that two things can happen when you put someone's back to the wall. They can surrender or... they can come out fighting like a wildcat with nothing to lose. Time and time again the US displayed almost suicidal courage in pressing home their attacks. Which I'm sure came as a tremendous shock to the Japanese.

To the narrator of this channel. If we met you could tell me in detail what the weather was Tuesday a week ago and I would enjoy every second of it.

It’s getting easier to see the Japanese’ limits in the kind of warfare they were good at.
