"How can the estimate be so far out"
Sochi is in Russia - the reason should be obvious. Thank you for attending my TED talk.
Yes, corruption is apparently endemic in Russia.
In ‘84 we had less traffic than normal during the Olympics. People joked about having them all of the time.
Many businesses staggered their employee work hours. Or workers took their vacation and stayed off the freeways.
The Olympics used a freeway for a bicycle race.
I too lived in LA in 84 and they did a great job. I don't recall any problems.
Plus, this time around Covid demonstrated that work-from-home can work when necessary. Between replicating strategies from '84, increased use of shuttle busses and regular public transit, and employers figuring work from home is a public service, I anticipate traffic will present only minor concerns when the Games arrive.
@@johnmaster3748And there is the LA Metro now which will go to many of the most important sporting venues.
That was a long time ago buddy
@@tomdavis8757 '84 worked because Angelenos voluntarily reduced their driving. Whether they did so from a spirit of civic duty to help reduce traffic flow during the Games, or from self-preservation to avoid the expected horrific traffic during the Games, the lesson is the same: the local population can reduce Games-related traffic. Issues by choosing not to drive. So, long ago or not, if the local folks change their driving behavior during the Games, it is reasonable to assume that the worst possible traffic outcomes can be avoided.
The thing about hosting the Olympics is that you have to have a plan for the facilities after the games. That's why so many cities lost money. They had no plan and just abandoned the buildings. LA has hosted the olympics before, and honestly I think that the US can do a great job at it. I love the Olympics (especially for the gymnastics which I am a huge fan of) and always get really excited when they come around.
Breakdancing is not coming back. It's being replaced by softball, baseball, flag football, and cricket.
Raygun crying on her way to work, just wishing there is a way she could con her way into a different sport at the next Olympics.
And Lacrosse
Nice
Raygun broke breakdancing 😂
@@JoshuaMartian-go3tm They already voted before the Paris Olympics even started not to have breakdancing in LA. She didn’t kill breakdancing, but she did put the final nail in the coffin.
I was in LA in 1984 during the olympics, traffic was non-existent, With remote work I would expect the same this time around.
And people will use the LA Metro to get to many of the venues.
@@mrxman581 I lve in L.A. and use the bus and train to get around. It is not the greatest in public transportation. They will have to hire charter buses to transport the Olympic Games ticket holders. traffic will be horrendous, btw.
LA 28 logo comes in about 50 different versions. Some are designed by celebrities like snoop dog, others are to honor people like Kobe Bryant, lots are designed by local artists to highlight different neighborhoods.
It any city can do this and still make a profit, it's Los Angeles.
Daz obviously hasn't ever dealt with LA traffic...
what traffic?
as someone who lives in la it is not that bad if you know where, when and how you are going somewhere. remote jobs and delivery bots has really helped traffic too
LA doesn’t even have the worst traffic in the world. Not even the worst in the USA.
I've been to LA recently. Traffic is actually noticeably lighter post pandemic, but still busy. You can tell many people are working hybrid jobs also by the fact that occupancy in highrise office buildings is at about 40-60%.
@@homerj806 Wrong. They are doubling the number of metro busses for the fans. The busses will shuttle back and forth between pickup areas in large parking lots, like for instance in local malls. This was done in '84, as you can see IN THE VIDEO. They are also DOING THIS NOW for concerts at SoFi stadium. In addition, the subway and light rail expansion has been going on FOR YEARS with the goal of having it completed by 2028. Lastly, the city has plans to setup EVTOL landing pads around the city, as chances are at least 2 companies, Joby and Archer Aviation, will have FAA approval by late 2025/ early 2026 to fly passengers!
LA was the first city to make a profit from the Olympics. I think the USA is fine.
“Was” is past tense
LA28 will save a big wad of cash by using UCLA to house, feed and train the athletes.
The fact that many Olympic locations literally create small temp cities to serve as the Athletes Village is crazy…
The fact that EVERYTHING is built is great.
It really allows for the city to focus on actual big items like transportation, hospitality, spectator and athlete experience and legacy.
So often the bulk of the time and energy is spent building stadiums and villages that everything else becomes an after thought.
True, and they will house the reporters from around the world at USC where the news centers will be located.
😮Actually the Olympic village will held at Loyola Marymount Uni (LMU) due to 1) LMU is literally two minutes from LAX 2) LMU is also about 10 minutes from both SoFI Stadium and the newly opened as of Aug 20 Inuit Dome ( the Clippers NBA Stadium) Trust me LMU has the accommodations to house most if not all of the Olympic athletes, given there are dorms on both ends of campus ( I know because LMU is my Alma Mater). Shuttles will transport athletes between LMU and the LAX- Aviation Green Line station where they can take the Crenshaw -LAX ( K ) line and connect to the Expo ( E ) line to get events in Exposition Park , where USC, the Aquatic Stadium mentioned in the video and Collisseum as well as the Bancc of California Soccer ⚽ Stadium are , not to mention three of L.As world class museums, The Cal African American Museum, Calif . Sci Center home of the Space Shuttle 🚀 Endeavour and the L. A County museum of Natural History, also by next year, the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will be open. The Expo line can also betaken to the Staples Center (Now Crypto.com Arema. For those of us Angelenos , who remember the Shaq-Kobe Era and the 3 peat championships the Lakers had between 2000-2002 , it doesn't matter how many times this particular arena changes it's name, it'll always be Staples Center, sprt of how for many Chicagoans The Willis Tower will always be the Sears Tower).
@@danielleporter1829 “The state-of-the-art campus at the University of California, Los Angeles will be the LA28 Athletes' Village, hosting more than 15,000 competitors for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
LMU…LOL…
@@danielleporter1829 Your plan sounds awesome!
Somebody better tell that to the Olympic Committee since they’ve already decided on UCLA as the Athletes Village tho…LOL.
Katie Ledecky is going for one last Olympics in 2028. She killed it in Paris this time in swimming.
2034 Winter Olympics are being hosted by Utah once again. We hosted the wildly successful games in 2002 and had a great time! It is well worth attending an Olympic Games. The experience is truly unique to be able to do something different daily! Cheers
1:32 Atlanta turned a profit from the 1996 Olympics.
Corruption plays a large part in cost overages.
One of the largest expenses since the 1972 games, and compounded by 911, is security for the athletes and spectators.
I’ve been to LA many times and with the exception of LAX I’ve seen no security in any way shape or form. They didn’t have smash and grab at the ‘84 Olympics
This will be Los Angeles 3rd time. 1932,184 and 2028
Atlanta also turned a profit.
Americans know how to do capitalism
And it pissed off the corrupt IOC. Mitt Romney deserves a Nobel Prize for blowing the whistle and driving Sammorich(sp?) and his cronies out.
Temecula is in Riverside California ,Temecula is about 68 miles from Palm Springs.
Temecula is not Riverside. It's 30 minutes South.
It's in Riverside County, but yes, it is about 30 miles south of Riverside City
68 miles is nothing to promote woke culture
I can tell you for a fact that the LA 1984 Archery and Skeet fields are still used to this day as archery and skeet recreational areas.
Do you know if they will be used again for 2028?
LA is one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup we are hosting with Canada and Mexico
there is no bad seat in sofi. have been several times for a few football games and a couple concerts
The construction of the new railway stations have been hectic in the arear of LA that I live in. The traffic is crazy in LA on a Friday night at peak traffic time it took me 2 hours to drive 60 miles. This 60 mile drive home was only 40 minutes, big difference lol.
Proud to say I'm from Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, California. 🤣
I knew LA was sprawling, but I didn't know the eastern suburbs spread all the way to Oklahoma now. 😅
OakLAhoma
Yeah, I'm from LA and thought using Oklahoma city was ridiculous until I heard that Paris had their sailing competition in Marseille, which is a 2 hour flight away, and their surfing competition in Tahiti, which is a 21 hour flight.😂
I think LA to Oklahoma city is about a 2 hour flight, too. I'm ok with that now.
@@mrxman581 WEll OKC is where the college softball championships are held every year... Conoe in OKC is surprising though.
Temecula is still in California, just a little more inland rather than coastal so it tends to be warmer in the summer. Lots of really good vineyards there, though. Perfect for wine touring on a warm summers day. 🍷
This Thursday and Friday it’ll be 110 in Temecula. You call that warm?
@@tomdavis8757it’s all relative. I have a home in Las Vegas and last year I was in New Orleans in August. I also did my undergrad in Riverside, CA. Average highs in Temecula in July and August are in the low 90s. Warm, but doesn’t really compare to other places on the average.
No one wants to host Olympics anymore. That’s why for the first time in history, they awarded 3 Olympics at the same time to Paris, LA & Australia. The risk reward for countries isn’t worth it anymore.
I can tell you that, as an American, the hottest tickets will be swimming, men’s and women’s basketball and the women’s football. All of those tickets will be gone as soon as they go on sale!
Great job covering L.A. 2028
The Utah winter Olympics made massive amounts of money, and all the venues are still in use today. The Olympic venues in Utah are still making money. The Utah winter Olympics are slated to be held once again in 2034. The Stadium at the University of Utah has already been expanded and many more upgrades are in the works for the whole Olympic experience. It is being rumored that the Olympics are getting too expensive to host and that a few host countries or cities will be permanent homes to the Olympics. I can see where this might be better, just for the fact that host cities in the past have spent huge amounts of money on the venues and the venues go unused.
It would be good if they picked one city each for the summer and winter games on each of the seven continents around the world and cycle through those cities. And if for any reason a city couldn't fulfill their duty to host, the next city on the schedule would be ready fairly quickly to step in.
Republican state. You cannot even compare Utah to California. Nope. Definitely not
LA has a whole nother arena that as far as I know isn't hosting any events (the Kia Forum), and they chose to host swimming at SoFi, which tells me they think they can sell that many tickets.
LA is made for the Olympics. The Coliseum is hella old but works great for track and field events. The infrastructure that made 84 a sucess has only been improved since 84. A lot. Light rail, new venues. 2028 will be great. Especially is Russia is absent again.
We have 2 subway lines, too, plus the 4 light rail lines. By 2028, one of the subway lines will be extended 9 miles to UCLA, where the athletes village will be located, and where Pauley Pavilion is, too. The site fir Judo and wrestling.
LAX will also have a new automated people mover that will connect to the LA Metro by 2026.
BTW, the Memorial Colosseum got a huge $350 million renovation and upgrade a few years ago. It was done by USC because it's their home field. The old girl has never looked better.
You go from $10BN to $51BN with a whooooolllllleeeeee lot of corruption (allegedly).
Yeah, it’s funny watching videos about how LA is going to “save billions” when you know the truth
Cheers
@@tomdavis8757 Ya, I was actually referring to Russian oligarchs but you just keep on telling yourself deliberate lies. LOL
Saying no Olympics other than LA in 84 have made a profit I’m pretty sure is just inaccurate, a big issue is there’s debate over what counts as profit. For example, some sources say Vancouver 2010 made a profit (plus it probably boosted Whistler tourism in the long-term).
If the bean counters and politicians want to debate what “profit” is then let them. The definition of profit is clear and concise
Cheers
How much do they factor in the infrastructure that is built, that needs to be built, and the city uses afterwards, but can't manage to pay for itself in that time frame? Things like bus lines, metro stops, etc..
The Seine isn't as clean as they wanted but it's not like that's not a needed task they can continue with, but there's zero ways to profit from it.
a swimming arena is called a "natatorium"....
Or Aquatorium.
The city of LA in 2024 is vastly different from how it was in 1978-84 when they were preparing for the Olympics. I love my city, but the traffic has quadrupled, we have 1million more residents and frankly our public transport is subpar compared to other equally sized cities.
This Olympics will cost at least $10 billion, I don’t know how they are going to manage anything less. Even is part of it is privately funded, us the taxpayers will see already allocated funds diverted to cover the rest.
Every major American city has the sports infrastructure to host the summer Olympics.. Colorado could host winter and summer Olympics..
Salt Lake City already had the infrastructure from hosting in 2002 which is why they have been awarded the 2034 Olympics.
@@loganleroy8622 Why doesn't Salt Lake City pursue an NFL team ?
@@michaelb.3982 Well probably because they have a population of 200k and a metro population of 1 million which would make them the 2nd-4th smallest market to have an NFL team. The NFL is full at 32 teams so you’re asking every team except Green Bay, New Orleans, and Jacksonville to move to a smaller market when they move their team.
@loganleroy8622 I was there recently.. it seemed big enough to have an NFL team, but I understand.. They want to expand in Europe.. Germany had a waiting list of 500,000 for the NFL games there..
Every American city? Has facilities for whitewater kayak? For surfing? For sailing? For ski jumping? Luge? Bobsled? For long track speed skating? Has multiple indoor arenas for gymnastics & M basketball & W basketball & volleyball and places for handball, fencing, table tennis. Not just the athletes, but large enough to accommodate audiences? And practice venues? Has a large outdoor stadium with a track? And another one for football ⚽? And medium sized outdoor facilities for more football ⚽, rugby 7s, flag football 🏈 , field hockey, and, oh yes, baseball and softball will also require multiple venues. How about swimming? Olynpic-sized pools wont be an issue. But how many collegiate or high school venues have pools capable of hosting 20,000+ spectators?
Frankly, I would say the list of U.S. cities prepared to host an Olympics without having to build any new facilities is incredibly small. Possibly, one: Los Anegeles. So Fi is, arguably, the best stadium in the world, and it's such an after thought it will be reduc3d to half-capacity for swimming. No one else has a spare NFL stadium that wouldn't be used for football ⚽ or track first.
The people running LA now will find a way to lose money on this.
I'm miffed, why the hell is OKC hosting softball? Someone is pocketing money off that deal, there's so many softball facilities in LA county that could easily host softball regardless of scheduling. Something fishy going on there
It doesn't make sense.. I agree.
There isn’t a big enough facility in LA that can host the softball games, so they decided why not host it in the largest softball facility in the country
from what it looks like they are doing it at OU and from the little softball knowledge i know, aren’t they like the best softball program in the country?
@@soar011belize it's hard to believe the L.A. area doesn't have a decent softball complex..
@@michaelb.3982 the only decent one is at UCLA but the IOC wants a bigger stadium so they can host a larger crowd

LA has been do renovations on LAX ✈️ for years now in preparations for 2028 (Burbank ✈️ is so much better.)
LA has like one subway & the traffic is the worst! Dodgers Stadium has been trying to get a gondola 🚠 or something with standstill traffic for like 2 decades! So I have no idea how more buses will help with the traffic dilemma.
I think the Olympics should have multiple host countries (similar to the U.S., Canada, Mexico World Cup) to help save money.
More buses will help if they close off some of the street to cars which is the plan.
@@saksit247Yes, they'll have temporary BRT lines exclusive for the Olympics. I could even see them temporarily change some carpool lanes into BRT lines.
LAX renovations and expansion have been going on since before LA bid for the games. And, remember, LA actually wanted the 2024 games, not the 2028 games.
LA has built more public rail infrastructure in the last 34 years than any other US city. They have 4 light rail lines, 2 subway lines, and 2 BRT lines. Several of the Olympic venues will be accessible via the LA Metro network.
Mass transit is a disaster in LA. They have spent billions on high-speed rail, but haven't built anything.

1984 Olympics was crap especially the opening and closing were embarrassing
I really hope LA does not lean in on identity and race politics during the 28 Olympics and focus on just making it entertaining.
La has been incredibly woke the past few years and even sacrificed entertainment value for politics, so I really hope they get their shit together and don’t embarrass America.
By politics do you mean recognizing people/groups/communities that are different than yours? How does that actually diminish your experience at all? Does it hurt your feelings?
Aka I hope the don’t acknowledge our history and the culture of black and Latino people as they make up a big part of our nation. If you’re racist just say that. @@MovieGuy808 why so you need to be so condescending?
What I’m talking about is the one box office failure after another that failed because the Hollywood studios wanted to push the woke agenda that has been especially popular in California for the past few years.
California used to be the entertainment capital of the world but as of late they seem to have forgotten what made them great.
Now California has the highest homelessness in the US and is ranked among the highest when it comes to crime, but all the California government seems to care about is race equality which we have had for the past 50+ years and they continue to push the trans agenda, who fucking cares what about people’s sexual orientation or gender identity? like it matters to me, all i want is good entertainment without them shoving a trans black person into every main character role.
Why should groups be recognized MovieGuy808? It's the Olympics. Just recognize the incredible athletes.
