  • Let's read DA PAM 750-30, The M16A1 Operation and Preventative Maintenance Comic book. Why did the US Military directly make and publish comics for soldiers to read?

I enjoyed the video and as a retired veteran it had lots of good info. I use to enjoy reading the old PM magazine, lots of the old training publications had cartoons included. One that comes to mind is the land navigation training pub, it had a cool cat as the main character, lol.Soldiers always enjoyed reading comics and having a comic to teach or assist in training was a bonus. Believe me when I say if a copy of PM magazine was left laying around someone would snatch it up. Good stuff.

The man that did the artwork for the PM magazine was the same one who drew for the comic book “G.I. Combat”.

I came in the Army in 1986 and went to Ft. Benning for Infantry Basic and AIT. My Drill Sergeants Larabelle and Adams were both very competent Drill Sergeants. Drill Sergeant SFC Larabelle was a Vietnam combat veteran from the 173rd Airborne Brigade and did 3 tours, he knew how to teach us after initial training before rifle qualification on the 3rd and 4th week of Basic. He showed us how to make a chamber scraper and cleaning pick by using a metal wire hanger to clean our M16A1 rifles, cartridge stripper clip, and pipe cleaners. First was cut a wire hanger and sharpening one end and flatten one end with a hammer then slightly bending the flat side. It was a universal tool to clean the chamber with the flat end and the sharp end to clean the bottom of the bolt carrier and stripper clip. The pipe cleaner was used for the gas key and between the holes in the back handguard where it holds the gas tube. It was also used to clean the inside of the flash suppressor after soaking it first with LSA or CLP which we both had at that time. Never had a problem with the M16 series to the M4 in my 23 years after and built many from parts kits. Understand it by building it always works.

Excellent story friend! I went through Ft. Benning school for boys in 1983 and retired in 2009 and served as an 11H then later we were folded into 11B’s. I never heard of that field expedient tool, I can see how perfect it would be though. Like you, I had Vietnam era NCO’s that passed on the skills and techniques they used during the war. Like you I never experienced failures with live ammo, blank ammo is another story, I’d like to poke a sharp stick in the eye of whoever came up with the BFA! And like you, I despised the 3 cleanings of our weapons during field recovery. What annoyed me was how heavy the M-16A4 was that I carried in Iraq in 2003-04, I guess I got spoiled with the M-16A1’s.
      I was in D Co. 2/502 INF, 101st then 1-7 INF, 3rd ID and 2-6 INF, 1st AD.

TL/DR; But, why? SECDEF McNamara decided to lower all standards to fill the ranks, including IQ.
