      I’d love to see a show that goes over what a good job posting is for a Jr. or Entry Level Data Analyst. Do you think the market is becoming oversaturated with new Data Analysts? What is your prediction for how that may affect the job market?

    Thanks Alex, I needed this video. I know it was posted a year ago and you may not see this but I’m currently trying to figure all this out and I’ve been binging these videos. But this one in particular was helpful. I see these junior posts and just keep adding things I need to learn and putting more on my plate than necessary to land that junior role.
    The last key words were mushroom, celery and beets 😂

    It's almost the same in Europe! I am in Ireland and seeing these requirements absolutely demoralizes you. But I am glad you put this up and it helps me believe in myself a bit more knowing that I don;t need to go out of my way to learn advanced concepts just to apply for entry level and graduate roles. Thanks, Alex! This means so much. Will now watch your video on the realistic jobs!

It might be 3 years after posting this video that I'm watching now, but I'm seriously touched by your efforts to help aspiring data analysts like me to break into data. I was so excited and full of confidence from watching your videos...then I looked up job opportunities in my area and totally lost every bit of confidence. It was intimidating and most of them didn't make sense, such as some didn't have job descriptions, others wanted you to have an accounting degree, and some jobs expect you to also be the IT person! Great Video! Beets!

    Great video, and I really support your opinion. I really wish there were more experience professional who state their opinions on this. These types of job requirement sometimes are a joke. It can let down any type of junior individual trying to start his/her dream career/job and see these types of job posts asking for ridiculous requirements that sometimes makes you question of your skills and your hard work.

    Maybe a bit nit-picky on my part, but it drives me CRAZY when recruiters/hiring managers cannot post the job ad properly. Big things are: spelling mistakes on basic words ("Bachalors"), inconsistent details (hiring for junior, yet listing mid-senior) and above all, NOT knowing what a Data Analyst does.
    They hold applicants to a very high standard, yet cannot bother to proof-read their own job ad. It drives me absolutely bonkers!

  • @tess5747
    @tess5747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Even if you think the requirements are overwhelming and unrealistic still apply (might as well). A job where I used to work was advertised, on the advert it said applications would end by .... due to anticipated large number of applicants. The person who got the job turned out to be the only applicant! I’ve also had jobs where the unrealistic requirements versus the reality of the job were quite different, the advert was intimidating but the job was nothing special.

This has been a pet peeve of mine, and this is the first time I have seen someone call out these ridiculous job postings/requirements. Shouldn't HR be in alignment with the department/job area needing the position filled to put together what they are looking for? I feel that most of the descriptions are purely HR written. Sometimes I have had job interviews by phone by HR people and they start talking about this tools and what do you do with them. When you start responding you quickly realize you are talking with someone that's just reading from a piece of paper and marking checks depending if you mentioned a tool or not. The problem is that they just leave these position writing to HR and don't even care to check if what they wrote makes sense or not

  • @JimRohn-u8c
    @JimRohn-u8c 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Coming from HR as a Comp Analyst, I can tell you it's maddening for HR, at least thats my experience. I'm sure its different everywhere. It's typically a battle between what the hiring manager wants and the budget finance will approve for the salary. I lose my mind because a job gets priced on the job responsibilities/quals and NOT the title... needless to say I get a lot of push back. HR must hold to the market data analysis and not bend to the manager to avoid this. If they're adamant then I think what happens is HR goes forward with posting the unrealistic job description (nonsensical imo) letting the manager figure out the hard way that their expectations are ridiculous! In the end they have no choice but to change the job description or the actual job... so don't hesitate to apply when you see these unrealistic job posts!! Chances are no one is applying and they'll jump to bring you in for an interview at some point :)

    Back when I lived in DC doing contract work a security clearance was a highly valued and prized credential. Back then they were hard to come by and get. I had heard through the grape vine that a lot of former military people with these credentials didn't realize how much they could command and were routinely underpaid. I'm curious if that is sill the case and why you see ridiculous job ads like you posted. I also work in the Salesforce space, anything with one or more certifications usually start around $80K. I'm a little confused about "Beets" and "Beats" but wanted to include both to be safe :)

    Enjoyed this, encouraging to us newbies who can get overwhelmed with so called entry level requirements.
    One thing I would say on the 2-7 year requirement one, maybe they are saying if you have 10 years experience you're over qualified. I used to work as a recruiter and you'd often get people apply for a basic role with way too many years of experience, simply because they're desperate for work. They'd jump on to another role 6 months down the line once the market improves.

    I think, the majority of those vacancies are never ment to actually hire anyone in the first place.
    I don't know about US, but vacancies of Russian government (militilary including) are often just official fiction - the actual employee is already chosen, but they have to put up a show (because of the laws) "we actualy tried to find someone else". So what we see - is vacancy with rediculous requirements.
    As for consulting companies - the hiring process itself is big part of their marketing strategy. So such vacancies' purpose is to create the reputation "God, thier Junior level is so high, the Seniors must be Gods alive", not only in the eyes of general public, but of their clients in particular. Beets=)

    This comes down to money employers do not want to spend money on mid to senior level positions they want to pay someone on junior or entry level positions to save cost. The average senior in their field medical science it earns 80k to 100K Plus an employer just don't want to pay that they want to pay $35 to 70 before taxes

    Hey Alex. Is it possible to learn data analyst from my home country i.e India and seek a job in any of the states in America or will I have to see some Msc degree from US!?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In order to come to the States typically you either need to come here for school and then look for a job immediately after or have experience and a degree (most likely Masters) and then try to get a job in the States. Definitely possible!

    Hi Alex,
    I am currently learning the Matplot lib and seaborn libraries in python for data visualization and this finds a bit difficult for me to learn .I have already learnt the data visualization tool Tableau is it necessary to learn these libraries still?

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have good Tableau skills you don't necessarily need to learn it, but it does definitely broaden your job possibilities as well as increase your earning potential. Those libraries are going to be harder than Tableau since it is a drop and click system, but the visualizations are the same in the end.

    • @AlexTheAnalyst
      @AlexTheAnalyst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha first off - I hear you on this one. Truth be told I think both definitely interact with other people more than you’d think. It’s a lot of talking to other coworkers or clients to figure things out. With that being said I think Data Analysts do more social interaction than Data Scientists. Be aware though - both do require quite a bit of social interaction.

    over the past month I look at 50+ jobs and found exactly one that is reasonable. Out of these 50, I tried to apply to 22 of them. Of those 22 only one reached out - I bet you can guess which one.
