Royal Enfield Bullet oil change 'priming' tips at Performance Classics.

  • Just a short clip explaining the procedures I use when performing an oil and filter change on a Royal Enfield Bullet 350 or 500, to ensure the engine gets oil where it is needed as soon as the engine is started. Also, not seen in this clip, I like to pump a little oil into the timing chest with the tappet cover removed, to make sure all is well after the timing cover has been refitted.

    The manual suggests that the crankshaft is rotated as the timing case is fitted so that there is no damage to the quill or pump shaft thread

      Yes, although the timing cover often goes all the way on without doing that. If I feel any resistance before the timing cover is home, I rotate the engine a little, so it will go fully home. Never use a mallet!

    Thanks for this Paul , I have been pouring oil in through the quill hole after removing the quill of course and taking the rocker feed pipe off to check the return flow which can still take a while .your way is much more direct 👍

    Very pleased to see that you use the same oil as me for my 2 classic Triumphs (72 Daytona and 73 Tiger 750). If it's good enough for you......

      @@paulhenshaw4514 Thank you Paul. That oil does not specifically say it's OK for motorcycles (and their clutches) but I thought it should be OK. If you use it, that's good enough for me. Keep up the good work!

    That's one hell of a piston in there Paul. . . What piston is it?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is the so called 9:1 American made piston from Hitchcocks, I have used a good number of them, but they are more like just under 8:1 until I shorten the barrels by 1 - 2 mm, by my reckoning.

    Silly question, is there no gasket for the timing case?

    Good video Paul, thanks for making it. I do have a question. I don't usually remove the cover for an oil change, but do remove the quill to get that little bit of oil out of there. With the quill out could you not put oil into the hole that feeds the quill to prime the filter, or not?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With just the quill bolt out, it is possible to pump oil from a can, straight into the big end and crankcase.

    • @hotoilhands
      @hotoilhands 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Paul. Do you suppose putting oil into the hole in the cover that supplies the quill would flow back and down to the filter? I'm thinking any oil in that hole might not get past the pump.

    • @hotoilhands
      @hotoilhands 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I am doing an oil change now and have answered my own question. With the filter removed, cavity wiped clean, and the quill out I am able to shoot oil through the small hole at the edge of the quill hole and down into the filter cavity. So it will be possible to fill up the filter without removing the cover. Now it will be much slower to do it this way through the small hole, but still. It never occured to me before I watched your video to shoot some oil with a can into the passage going through the crank to get some oil into the crankcase. Great tip if I may say so. And I suppose it would still be a good idea to pop the cover off every so often to check the pump worm gear, and gears. I should mention I have a 1995 Indian Bullet, so you have to consider there may be differences between Madras and Redditch engines . Cheers. 🙂

      @@hotoilhands I don't think you will get oil into the filter chamber that way, but you can send it into the crankcase via the end of the crank, through the big end.

    Excellent Paul what oil do you use in your asbo motors and is it different to oil you use in a standard motor?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David and thanks. I use Morris's 20/50 mineral for engine, clutch, gearbox and forks [I have no connections to the company btw].

    Couple of small points, I always prime the c'case with the engine at the bottom of the stroke, less messy! I have always removed the quill and refitted after the cover is in place, any advantage in leaving in place?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't matter much what point of rotation the crank is at when priming from the oil can, as 99 percent of the oil pumped in goes out through the big end and into the crankcase. Some like to remove the quill bolt before fitting the timing cover - and I do, where a new cork type seal might be used in the worm nut, but other than that you would need to be pretty clumsy to do any damage with the quill bolt in place.

  • @enfielddnepr

    A manual states that after rebuild of the engine, you should 'bleed'(de-air) the engine at the nut of the quill and the 2 upper bolts of the oil feed tube..
    But why? Air can escape in the engine and pressure builds up by itself when air is through?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no benefit in doing this, other than to confirm oil is being pumped around the engine.

    Paul , is it possible to convert one of them 350 cc enfields to a 500 cc by changing head and block ..or is there more to it than just that

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The crankcase mouth has to be enlarged and the barrel stud locations moved outwards. Also, the 500 flywheels are heavier and have a different balance to the 350, so quite a bit to be done if doing it properly.

    That bit, at 01:16 , re. no C-case oil for a min., do you think that at the factory, after the motors were first hammered together, they then did as you did to overcome that problemme, or they just relied upon assembly-lube (grease), until ?

      Hi Amelie, I have no idea how things were done at the factory, but nothing would surprise me! I have ridden to and through Machynlleth many times in years gone by - my rides are always quite local now - but never heard of the 'Loop'. Not much further on, is a place called Tonfanau, where we have raced our Royal Enfields a few times.
