The way dobber tunes his drums tickles my soul in a very particular way. Absolutely can't enough of his drum sound. Kick super dead and low, snare and cymbals bright and washy, toms like thunder. It's sooooo good
The music video of "Winter" was a suggestion here on TH-cam and after seeing it I wanted to hear more from them. After seeing the video of "This Road" I immediately ordered the album "Winter" . What a voice !
During a performance of No Color, No Light she had tears running down her face and it was the most moving performance I have ever witnessed. Absolutely soul crushing. This was during the tour with Insomnium, small venue.

Yeah, this song doesn't really feature Cammie's vocal talent. It's catchy, but it's not a song worthy of analysis. The stunning The Banished Heart or A Return To The Earth Below or the studio version of Sunlight would have been much better. And they're just better songs overall.

I met Cammie when OoS supported Ne Obliviscaris in London a few years back. She was super nice, very friendly, and their set was an excellent opening act. I'm really glad to see that OoS are gaining a bit more traction and getting more recognition, they're great. I'd particularly recommend their cover of Nights in White Satin.
Great band, happy you found them! Cammie is phenomenal. The Banished Heart is an absolute must, featuring much more of her range coupled with a hauntingly beautiful video as well.
So I've listened to this channel for maybe a few years now, probably fifty or more of your videos, and I've never once just stopped and gone to listen to the original track mid viewing. Until now. What on earth is this beautiful song? I'll be back! 💜

I do like seeing different and unique things in metal, and her voice is unique. I think I'll check out more. I did get a bit of an Opeth feeling from some parts. That said, I would love to see you do another Opeth video. I know there aren't a lot of great videos for a vocal analysis, but Mikael has written so many amazing songs and does so many great things with his cleans and growls in all of them. The 2 videos you have done were barely a taste.

Hmm, maybe not the best choice for a first impression (A Return To The Earth Below for example is much more impressive and explores more of her voice registers), but still a solid performance from one of the best vocals in Progressive Metal right now. Cammie is absolutely stellar, both in studio and live, and puts her soul into every note. I don't remember the last time I was so impressed by a "new" voice in the scene, she and the brilliant drumwork from her husband makes this project one of the best things that happened to Metal in the past decade. Cammie has an amazing voice. This is the leadoff track from the latest album, where they leaned heavily into a Southern gothic feel. Dark and brooding, lovely stuff. If your looking to just listen, their version of "House of the Rising Sun" from that album is haunting. Staying with a haunting, dreamy voice, check out A.A. Williams and her song "Control". specifically the version from "arco". She scored her original for strings. She was a professional cellist before taking up the guitar and singing. Her music is always lush and dark.
What a beautiful piece of music thank you for expanding my horizon! I really love watching your facial expressions and visceral reactions to music. You also point out little techniques and explain the technical terminology of what is happening vocally really well. Thank you!
I was very happy to see this review of Oceans of Slumber. My childhood friend was in this band up until a year or so ago and he asked me to go to their show while they were on tour and in town after they released The Banished Heart. The Banished Heart is a phenomenal album and Cammie's rendition on that album of "The Wayfairing Stranger" is so haunting and beautiful. There are so many songs worth listening to! Please listen to more to get the full spectrum of her vocal range!

Another song showing off more of her vocal skills, and a great message too. We need more reactions to BIPOC artists too! I started listening to Oceans of Slumber after finding The Decay of Disregard on TH-cam. Such an evocative sound. Then Sunlight and Winter were both great songs. Great to see it featured here. While not metal, I think the artist LP would be a great one to check out on the channel. The song Lost On You has a lot of interesting vocal work, and would make for a fascinating deep-dive.
Would recommend checking out A Return to Earth Below, This Road and / or The Winter. They're all great tracks by Oceans of Slumber and compliment her voice
Oceans of Slumber and Cammie are newer discoveries to me I’m so glad I found them. I don’t even know how to describe them. Some songs are hauntingly beautiful and yet soothing
Long overdue! Oceans of Slumber is so good, they deserve more fans \../ Great choice of song, my favorite from the new album.. maybe, too many good ones :D
Oceans of Slumber are such solid musicians, and Cammie is an absolute delight! She was a vocal tutor at Houston's "Girls Rock Camp" the year one of my kids attended, and Cammie happily chatted with me after a show about the experience, about her funny interactions with my kid. 😃Great people atop being great musicians!
Really looking forward to this reaction. This band is amazing. Its a solid choice for a first reaction of Oceans of Slumber, but iff you really wanna dive into her voice you should take a look at "This road" The live take from studio or A return to the earth Below. Both equally amazing pieces of art
Hi Elizabeth. Just stumbled on a new video from a Christian Rock band who formed back in the 1980's. The singer is Michael Sweet from Stryper and the song is called Transgressor. Amazing vocals from a 59 year old. 🤘👍👌
LOVE OCEANS OF SLUMBER!! Been listening to them for a few years now and had the luxury of seeing them live and meeting them for the first time just a couple of weeks ago. They are all so amazing and talented and there are a number of songs that really show off, not only Cammie’s voice, but the entire band as a whole. Off of their most recent album, I’ve found the song “Red Forest Roads” is absolutely amazing vocally. Other great songs to check out include “Pray for Fire”, “Sunlight”, “…This Road”, and “At Dawn”.
Love Oceans of Slumber, glad you finally got to them. Hope you continue looking up more progressive and melodic metal bands. A few I think you'd really like with excellent/varied vocal work and would love to see your reactions to would be Soilwork(Bjorn Strid), Dark Tranquillity(Mikael Stanne), Amorphis(Tomi Joutsen), and Soen(Joel Ekelof)
Thank you Elizabeth for your analysis of vocals from 80's songs I grew up on. I love your insights and emotional reactions, which remind me of the first time I heard them. Allow me to suggest you listen to Pat Benatar's 'Heartbreaker' off her 1979 debut album. I have heard she has a four octave range; she is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this November. Best wishes!
Cammie is incredible, and their back catalog is full of great material. ❤ I have a friend who knows the band and is always perplexed why they aren't more popular. Hopefully this analysis will get them some much deserved visibility!
Oceans of Slumber is a gift that keeps on giving. So thrilled to finally see them featured on this channel. You should check out Winter, The Banished Heart, or No Color No Light (which features Tom England of Evergrey). They’ve also done some amazing covers like Wolf Moon and a truly haunting version of Strange Fruit I would have recommended Pray For Fire, but Liz already said she’s going to check out the new album :P
Hey Elizabeth, recently found your channel and love listening to your take on songs old and new. I especially liked your Tremonti video of his Sinatra cover. I've listened to Tremonti for years now (huge fan all the way back to his Creed days), but it's cool to have someone walk you through the song and techniques he uses, and really appreciate what a talented vocalist he really is. If I could make a recommendation for you to look at - take a look at Our Last Night. They're a trio, consisting of 2 brothers who both do the lead vocals, one's clean and the other is a screamer. They do some really cool stuff, and one of their videos is of Disney rock covers which I think you might find quite intriguing. Anyway, keep up the great work, and look forward to seeing what you come out with next :)
Great to see you've reached Oceans of Slumber and the latest of Ayreon's leads (Transitus). I've been hoping you get there, as she's quite amazing! Their earlier stuff was reminiscent of The Gathering and was heavier, doomier, like an awesome cover of Solitude a few years back, but now they've evolved to a thing of their own, with this latest work moving off on a tangent of their own, less metal, but just as impressive.
Wow. Never heard of them before, but I looked them up based on watching this video. Seen they've done covers of some old classics too, like Nights in White Satin and House of the Rising Sun. Cammie's voice is truly haunting. I will definitely be listening to a lot more of their songs.
I love how you mentioned that she has a lot of power but instead of belting it out she's containing it. If you listed to A Return to the Earth Below like others are mentioning you'll be in for a treat
Oceans of Slumber 🙌 their catalog has such range and craft in each production. Such a necessity in my world through the years. Absolutely must get the latest album. All their albums! Incredible artists.
Cammie is another great vocalist I discovered thanks to the wonderful Arjen Lucassen. Cammie sings the lead female part (Abby) on the last Ayreon album Transitus.
I just ran into this band on a random playlist the other day! Been really enjoying their song "A Return To The Earth Below." She does some great belting in that as well.
Now that you’re a fan of Oceans of Slumber, check out their whole discography (it’s all great) and their excellent covers of “Strange Fruit” and “Nights in White Satin.”
Don't forget Wolf Moon! That's how I discovered them actually, they play Wolf Moon on the weekly cover show on Sirius's metal station every once in a while
I found this vocalist/band via Ayreon's Transitus. I don't think you've done any of that. You should take a look. Like everything from Ayreon it's amazing. There's a load of Tommy Karevik too, and we know you like that :-) I have no idea how to recommend a particular track though, as the whole story is so core to the work. It's all good :-)
Recommendations: EXIT EDEN - Unfaithful (Rihanna Cover) EXIT EDEN - Impossible (Shontelle Cover) Female fronted band with 4! singers Amanda Somerville(Avantasia, Alice Cooper, Epica, HDK, Kiske/Somerville, Aina, Trillium), Clémentine Delauney (Visions Of Atlantis), Marina La Torraca (Phantom Elite) and Anna Brunner The other songs are also worth checking out!
Have to add my voice to the at last a reaction to Oceans of Slumber and the magnificent Cammie. The new album is on repeat, and have fallen for the unique sound that resonates with something deep inside me.
I really enjoyed Oceans of Slumber's first album, Winter. There are some tracks on that you really MUST check out! I'm certain that the song "Lullaby" will chill you to the bone.
Oceans of Slumber is SO great! This song seems like a very odd choice for a first listen though. The obvious choice (to me) for a vocal analysis is their live studio session of "This Road". Runners up would include "Winter", and "A Return to the Earth Below".
this album is quite a departure from their sound , which is more like a progressive death/doom sound with tons of extreme parts and growls. Check out their previous three albums "Oceans Of Slumber" , "The Banished Heart" and "winter"
A Return to the Earth Below! I'm not the first to say it and surely not the last, for a good reason too. I implore you! Listening to that song again I don't really understand why recommending this over that considering the vocals.
I'd love to see a reaction to bjork - human behavior (the live version)! It's super musically interesting and she does some weird stuff with her voice that I'd love to have explained
I think it's time to listen to The Devil Wears Prada. They released a new album a couple days ago. The song Trapped is amazing and emotional, but there's no official video for it. I think from their new album, the song Time would be really good to analyze, with Mike's spoken word singing, his screams are very emotional. And there's an official video of it.

I'm glad to have heard of this band, thank you! :) The first part of the song reminded me of Heat Miser from Massive Attack (which is a good thing :) )
I love to see a video on something from Cellar Darling. Like "Dance" or "Insomnia". I discovered Oceans of Slumber at a concert both them Cellar Darling (and a bunch of other bands) were playing.
Check out "Ayreon - Hopelessly Slipping Away (feat. Cammie Gilbert & Tommy Karevik)". Since you already love Tommy from Kamelot & Seventh Wonder, you'll absolutely love this duet!!
Yes! One of my favorite bands. So many great songs, I wouldn't have known what to pick, but this is certainly a good one. Maybe not their most vocally elaborate, but definitely a solid representation of their sound these days.
Oh, Yesssssssssss!!!! Thanks for turning me onto a new band to check out. As a Black lady bassist who's been into Thrash Metal, Prog, and Post-Punk since the 80s, this really warmed my heart to see.
Since you mention that you've been into Thrash Metal (my overall favourite metal subgenre since I heard "Fight Fire With Fire" for the first time on the radio in 1984) since the 80s, I wonder if you are familiar with Znowhite's only full-length album "Act of God" (1988) which is one of my favourite Thrash Metal albums and one of the very few way back then to feature a female vocalist and a black guitarist - Greg Fulton aka Ian Tafoya - who also wrote all of the songs.
@@Raven5563 You're welcome! :) It would be nice if you could let me know what you think of "Act of God" once you have checked it out. If you don't mind, I could also suggest a few other - not so well known - bands you might like, but perhaps simply never have heard of. Even though these comment sections might not be the perfect place for longer conversations, I like it when it's possible to have them every once in a while. :)

Oceans of Slumber and Cammie are newer discoveries to me
I’m so glad I found them. I don’t even know how to describe them. Some songs are hauntingly beautiful and yet soothing
Long overdue! Oceans of Slumber is so good, they deserve more fans \../
Great choice of song, my favorite from the new album.. maybe, too many good ones :D
Glad to see OoS getting some love. They are totally overlooked and amazing artists!
I still love their song 'Winter' so much
Really like this song, the way she rolls her long iis, and aas into an ee. Her belt is a little higher that I expected, and it fits very well..
Oh, So fresh! I love to hear new sounds like that!
Cammie! 😍 Random discovery of mine but freakishly good. Sooooo looking forward to this!
I am SO happy the Patrons voted this onto my list. It's amazing!
Cammie is incredible, and their back catalog is full of great material. ❤ I have a friend who knows the band and is always perplexed why they aren't more popular. Hopefully this analysis will get them some much deserved visibility!
So nice to see my fave band here. More please?
I'm new to your channel and I have to say, I love your enthusiasm and energy. Thank you
Oceans of Slumber is a gift that keeps on giving. So thrilled to finally see them featured on this channel. You should check out Winter, The Banished Heart, or No Color No Light (which features Tom England of Evergrey). They’ve also done some amazing covers like Wolf Moon and a truly haunting version of Strange Fruit
I would have recommended Pray For Fire, but Liz already said she’s going to check out the new album :P
Their Candlemass cover - Solitude -is what hooked me.
I’m a casual Ayreon fan (haven’t dug too deep yet). I didn’t know that. I need to do a deep dive now
I just ran into this band on a random playlist the other day!
It's all good :-)
Love Oceans of Slumber so much! I got to see them at Trees in Dallas this year and they were so! good!
Ah, she's Abby from Ayreon's Transitus! I absolutely love her voice!
her song with Tommy it's just pure eargasm - it's soo deeply magical
Recommendations:
EXIT EDEN - Unfaithful (Rihanna Cover)
EXIT EDEN - Impossible (Shontelle Cover)
Female fronted band with 4! singers Amanda Somerville(Avantasia, Alice Cooper, Epica, HDK, Kiske/Somerville, Aina, Trillium), Clémentine Delauney (Visions Of Atlantis), Marina La Torraca (Phantom Elite) and Anna Brunner
The other songs are also worth checking out!
Have to add my voice to the at last a reaction to Oceans of Slumber and the magnificent Cammie.
The new album is on repeat, and have fallen for the unique sound that resonates with something deep inside me.
I discovered this band through the amazing cover they did of the song "Solitude" by Candlemass.
Love this lady. I really enjoyed the band and the vox were right up my street.
What a find! I'm loving this sound.
I really enjoyed Oceans of Slumber's first album, Winter. There are some tracks on that you really MUST check out! I'm certain that the song "Lullaby" will chill you to the bone.
Fascinating... I would have definitely landed her voice in an R&B or maybe jazz context. In a metal band? REALLY unexpected. Kinda digging it.
Try "Winter", "Colors of Grace", or their cover of Candlemass' "Solitude"
This is one of my fav bands of all time and usually gives me chills
New to me,too. Really enjoyed this song. Would be a good tune for the road. Great vocals! Gonna have to search them out, I s'ppose. 😇
Along with avatarium the best female metal vocalists right now !!!
Great reaction as usual.
The first part of the song reminded me of Heat Miser from Massive Attack (which is a good thing :) )
I love to see a video on something from Cellar Darling. Like "Dance" or "Insomnia". I discovered Oceans of Slumber at a concert both them Cellar Darling (and a bunch of other bands) were playing.
SO STOKED FOR THIS!!!!!!
The Banished Heart is a guaranteed goosebumb marathon!
Oceans of slumber is awesome, I discovered them through The Decay of Disregard, can 100% recommend this song!!
Check out "Ayreon - Hopelessly Slipping Away (feat. Cammie Gilbert & Tommy Karevik)". Since you already love Tommy from Kamelot & Seventh Wonder, you'll absolutely love this duet!!
Love this song, the whole album is excellent. Please do a reaction to their cover of House of the Rising Sun, it’s beautiful.
Just downloaded the whole album to listen to.
Now am listening to their whole catalog. Their cover of House of the Rising Sun is excellent
My favorite song of the album .the whole album is sick.the voice is crazy
@@MissLoonasSpeech , noooooooo, I wasn't! Thanks for the rec!!!
@@MissLoonasSpeech., ill let you know, and again, thank you so much!
Interesting group...I'm curious when the next Elizabeth analysis for OoS will come...🤔
