What inspires you to finish a painting... I have this problem where I start to paint and halfway through I feel bored and Nothing comes to my mind... I feel stuck.... And where do you get ideas for your paintings?? From traveling or you just extraordinarily creative???
Finishing a painting is the only way I’m able to stay this productive. I haven’t left a piece unfinished for years now. And by unfinished I mean unpublished. Since I know other people are going to see the piece soon it really makes me work hard so I don’t have to publish a stick figure doodle on my ig. Having “zero waste” like this makes it possible for me to have enough art to have this channel. I never paint more than 60minutes in one go to make sure I have enough breaks. Those are important to keep going, just as important as deadlines. Creativity and stamina for painting are skills like everything else. It takes time to build up them to match your desire for creating art but I don’t think they’re something you have or you don’t. It’s something that comes through repetition like everything else. Everyone has at least 3000 bad pieces of art in them, it’s good to get them out as quickly as possible. I really don’t believe in talent that much. When teaching art you see so many naturally gifted students that always fall to the level of the persistent ones as time passes. Eventually it’s the ones who find joy in the process who develop their skills the fastest due to the sheer volume of finished (published) work they produce. I want to quit like everyone else, with almost every painting. However I have enough mental tools to push through that part of the process. Sometimes it’s as simple as me saying to myself that “I can do this”. Everyone has to find their own trigger words that work for them in these situations. I know that quitting doesn’t just happen on its own. It’s a choice. So is finishing. When I put down the first dabs of colour on the canvas I know that I’ve already committed to finishing the painting. Even if I don’t know what I’m even painting I acknowledge that I have signed the contract with those first marks.
I love the depth of the green colors, even though it’s the same color, the amount of different shades and values you use makes me want to stare at the painting for so long!
I’m just getting into procreate and after watching your videos I’m realizing I need to learn how to the use the selection tool better. You’re making a lot of really complicated and accurate shapes with it with smooth curves and I haven’t figured out how that work. Thanks for showing me it’s possible, it really inspires me to learn more.

I really really like you. Sounds dumb, but the way you talk, and describe your feelings towards art make me remember why I loved this in the first place. this was an escape in my childhood, and a way to bring my worlds to life, something I can get lost in, and find wonder and magic. I use the paperlike covering on my ipad - it helps me be more precise tbh, my hand just goes crazy on the smoother ones haha. You inspire me to be a lot less detail oriented than usual, it seems to be a problem of mine that I get bogged down in being overly detailed, so watching you build a painting is just so helpful

This should also keep your TH-cam engagement up, so the video will be shown to more people as a result! And if it get's out of hand you can always write a small FAQ and just link to that in the info-box sometime in the future. It's also always a good idea to have some sort of own website at some point in case something happens to your social media, so when you feel like you need a FAQ it's probably also time to set up a website :)

The people who support me are ones that watch and comment on these videos. I also appreciate anyone who has bought my products on gumroad. The reason why I brought this topic up is because there are some who think they can make money out of services like the mentioned print store. That money goes to the vendor, not the artist. To put the sums in perspective: even if I sold 100x more on s6 I still wouldn’t be able to live one month with all the income that it generates during a normal year. My new print vendor: inprnt.com gives artists a better cut. Also the print submission process is a lot easier. (Do we really need hashtags on print stores though? It’s not like anyone is browsing randomly a landscape category in hopes of finding an artist they like, right?)
The glass is definitely slippery. I do a lot of line art and drawing, but I am also learning to paint, which is why I am watching your videos, and lots of Bob Ross. I really thought about the screen protector, but I haven't even had the tablet for 2 weeks yet, and I am already getting used to the glass and making lines I can live with. I feel like I should give it a chance. Also, on my previous tablet, a cheap, Wacom knockoff, the screen protector got really scratched up over the years and finally had a nice big rip in it, right where I needed to use buttons in certain software. That got frustrating. 😂 🤣 This painting is amazing, and I learned a ton with this video. Thanks!
I adore your art - there's so much life, visual interest, and story in each one! I also really love the way you paint greenery/forestry - would you ever consider doing a bit more of a tutorial style video for painting foliage? Or do you already have a video on that?
I'm not really sure about what's the right way to do that. Making a video where people can follow the steps to make the exact same tree seems like something I'd never do art students for obvious reasons so I'm having a hard time thinking why I'd do it on my channel. I wouldn't want to treat people watching this channel with looser ethics just because these videos are free. In many of my videos I go through the things that are good to keep in mind while painting trees. I think those tips are more useful as they're in no way specific to the style those pieces are done. A video I could do is maybe a compilation of these sort of notes. I don't have specific answer to this but it's something that I have brought up with other people who teach art. Just wanted to answer this so you know I'm not ignoring the request. It's just... complicated. 🤷♂️

I've watched many of your painting videos and they're very helpful in all sorts of ways so thank you very much for taking the time to create them 🙇🏻♀️ I used to draw a lot, took a long break and am just getting back into it. I feel like when I was younger I'm happy with whatever I create, but after stepping away from art for a long time but still following a lot of other artists, it feels like the gap between my skill and taste is drastic now and I'm never happy with the outcome. I know I have to push through it to improve! I'm doing more digitally in Procreate and your work and videos are both huge inspirations and learning references. Luckily patience is a skill like everything else and you get better at it with each attempt. Try narrowing down the scope so you can get some easy wins on your journey. Every painting teaches you something no matter how quick or easy it was to make.
I might do it when there's more awareness on the more eco friendly NFT options. The most popular ones right now are over 99% worse for the environment and that's why I will never be on platforms such as foundation that do not care about the consequences of their actions.

Interesting to watch (not too fast) and to listen to. Love hearing about what makes an artist want to create and their theme choices. As far as the brush question goes.... yeah, that's almost as annoying for people reading comments as it is for you. Maybe put it in the video info as well, but even then a lot of people simply don't want to read.
You can do an edit on your new videos that displays a text mentioning what brush you're using. Also, maybe the resolution for your piece. This will allow newcomers to get the information without having to ask each time.
Both of those already are in most of my videos. I’m going to do the caption thing but at some point I’ll just have to acknowledge that I’ve put the information out there for the people that want to find it. I’m proud of my own brush set but it’s not going to make anyone magically a better painter. Understanding visual problem solving however will. That’s part of the reason why I’ve made these recent videos so long. I wanted people to see how I solve various issues as the painting comes together rather than speeding through the hard part.
@@angrymikko I think that the magic of your videos is that, indeed. The thinking behind the work. Behind the details and the decisions. And ultimately, that's what makes them valuable. I think the people who asks about brushes and specs is probably people who is really new to the illustration world and don't have much clue about how to get to the point to where you are at. Letting them just watch the videos and putting the information somewhere accessible should be all you need to do on your end. They will eventually realize that it's not the brush or the specs that make the artwork, but the skills and the practice. Thank you for posting all of these videos, btw. I often listen to you while I'm working :)
Hey Mikko this is such an amazing piece and I wanted to say that I really respect you not only as an artist but as a person. I was really sad to hear that you make so little on your prints and when you said you don’t want to do sponsorships because they would affect what you want to say, that really resonated with me. I think a lot of people focus on the brush because perhaps like me they want to have a “one size fits all” solution to paint. I like the idea of only needing one brush from start to finish but a lot of the default ones make that difficult. I did have a question I’ve been wondering about for a while now. Do you ever paint “studies” any more? Or did you do studies when you were learning how to paint? One of my issues is that I tend to only want to start painting if it’s going to be for lack of better words “a polished piece” I can display. So I don’t tend to focus on just painting say...different kinds of rocks or muscles and anatomy. How important is that in terms of becoming a fully fledged artist? Thanks again for everything you do. I love the videos, love your art and love your way of seeing the world.

Could you briefly break down what you meant about changing the resolution, or maxing it out before getting too detailed? I honestly just had a hard time keeping up and fully understanding the benefit of doing that at the middle/end, instead of just starting with the max size and resolution from the start. You mentioned retaining sharpness a few times, but I thought that more more dependent on the DPI of the canvas? I may just be missing all of the points in general 😂 Im still learning and trying to make sure I understand how to change the canvas as I go along is still confusing.

The reason why I brought this topic up is because there are some who think they can make money out of services like the mentioned print store.
That money goes to the vendor, not the artist. To put the sums in perspective: even if I sold 100x more on s6 I still wouldn’t be able to live one month with all the income that it generates during a normal year.
My new print vendor: inprnt.com gives artists a better cut. Also the print submission process is a lot easier. (Do we really need hashtags on print stores though? It’s not like anyone is browsing randomly a landscape category in hopes of finding an artist they like, right?)
The glass is definitely slippery. I do a lot of line art and drawing, but I am also learning to paint, which is why I am watching your videos, and lots of Bob Ross. I really thought about the screen protector, but I haven't even had the tablet for 2 weeks yet, and I am already getting used to the glass and making lines I can live with. I feel like I should give it a chance. Also, on my previous tablet, a cheap, Wacom knockoff, the screen protector got really scratched up over the years and finally had a nice big rip in it, right where I needed to use buttons in certain software. That got frustrating. 😂 🤣

I adore your art - there's so much life, visual interest, and story in each one! I also really love the way you paint greenery/forestry - would you ever consider doing a bit more of a tutorial style video for painting foliage? Or do you already have a video on that?
I'm not really sure about what's the right way to do that. Making a video where people can follow the steps to make the exact same tree seems like something I'd never do art students for obvious reasons so I'm having a hard time thinking why I'd do it on my channel.
I wouldn't want to treat people watching this channel with looser ethics just because these videos are free.
In many of my videos I go through the things that are good to keep in mind while painting trees. I think those tips are more useful as they're in no way specific to the style those pieces are done. A video I could do is maybe a compilation of these sort of notes. I don't have specific answer to this but it's something that I have brought up with other people who teach art. Just wanted to answer this so you know I'm not ignoring the request. It's just... complicated. 🤷♂️

I used to draw a lot, took a long break and am just getting back into it. I feel like when I was younger I'm happy with whatever I create, but after stepping away from art for a long time but still following a lot of other artists, it feels like the gap between my skill and taste is drastic now and I'm never happy with the outcome. I know I have to push through it to improve!

I’m not sure I’m aiming for bigger but it was addictive to work on. I know I often complain about how long editing takes but making this video allowed me to spend more time with this mysterious island so it was actually really enjoyable.

Luckily patience is a skill like everything else and you get better at it with each attempt. Try narrowing down the scope so you can get some easy wins on your journey. Every painting teaches you something no matter how quick or easy it was to make.

I don't know if others will find this interesting or if you've already spoken about this before, but I'd love to learn about your processes for making prints/prepare your art for printing, such as the colour editing process, etc. It forms an important part of the art process and there's so much info about it online but I find it can get pretty confusing. Anyway, thanks for another great video!

Interesting to watch (not too fast) and to listen to. Love hearing about what makes an artist want to create and their theme choices. As far as the brush question goes.... yeah, that's almost as annoying for people reading comments as it is for you. Maybe put it in the video info as well, but even then a lot of people simply don't want to read.
You can do an edit on your new videos that displays a text mentioning what brush you're using. Also, maybe the resolution for your piece. This will allow newcomers to get the information without having to ask each time.
Both of those already are in most of my videos. I’m going to do the caption thing but at some point I’ll just have to acknowledge that I’ve put the information out there for the people that want to find it.
I’m proud of my own brush set but it’s not going to make anyone magically a better painter. Understanding visual problem solving however will. That’s part of the reason why I’ve made these recent videos so long. I wanted people to see how I solve various issues as the painting comes together rather than speeding through the hard part.
@@angrymikko I think that the magic of your videos is that, indeed. The thinking behind the work. Behind the details and the decisions. And ultimately, that's what makes them valuable.
I think the people who asks about brushes and specs is probably people who is really new to the illustration world and don't have much clue about how to get to the point to where you are at.
Letting them just watch the videos and putting the information somewhere accessible should be all you need to do on your end. They will eventually realize that it's not the brush or the specs that make the artwork, but the skills and the practice.

Hey Mikko this is such an amazing piece and I wanted to say that I really respect you not only as an artist but as a person. I was really sad to hear that you make so little on your prints and when you said you don’t want to do sponsorships because they would affect what you want to say, that really resonated with me. I think a lot of people focus on the brush because perhaps like me they want to have a “one size fits all” solution to paint. I like the idea of only needing one brush from start to finish but a lot of the default ones make that difficult.
I did have a question I’ve been wondering about for a while now. Do you ever paint “studies” any more? Or did you do studies when you were learning how to paint? One of my issues is that I tend to only want to start painting if it’s going to be for lack of better words “a polished piece” I can display. So I don’t tend to focus on just painting say...different kinds of rocks or muscles and anatomy. How important is that in terms of becoming a fully fledged artist?

Could you briefly break down what you meant about changing the resolution, or maxing it out before getting too detailed? I honestly just had a hard time keeping up and fully understanding the benefit of doing that at the middle/end, instead of just starting with the max size and resolution from the start. You mentioned retaining sharpness a few times, but I thought that more more dependent on the DPI of the canvas? I may just be missing all of the points in general 😂 Im still learning and trying to make sure I understand how to change the canvas as I go along is still confusing.
