This reaction has taught me the Twilight saga has apparently ruined a lot of people's ability to appreciate an excellent vampire movie.
Yep. Their understanding of vampirism was so grounded that lore; it made this reaction more difficult/confusing than it needed to be.

Yep, and to this day, for me at least, this is the best vampire movie ever. We need more like this, set in the World of Darkness (3.5 era/anniversary edition) preferably but with this vibe.
I once tried to get through Twilight -- the first book and first movie -- and it was so boring and stupid I couldn't. It was like watching a "romance" about a person falling in love with a hamburger. Vampires are only "attracted" to humans as FOOD. They don't want to take you to the prom.
I find it heartbreaking that people would think that Twilight is an example of what vampires are and might think this is a different take on vampires...
But it is a different take on vampires? There is no vampire story that is 'original'. IWTV was a departure from the 'dracula' type. 'Dracula' was a departure from the mindless bloodsucking fiend-type.Twilight and similar adaptations are just another incarnation. The vampire Chronicles didn't go anywhere.
Btw: have you seen the IWTV series, yet? I can't watch it where I live. If you have seen it; thoughts?

Twilight wouldn't exist without Anne Rice/Interview with the Vampire. She was the first to humanize them.
@Ogami I read the Anne rice books 30 years ago, saw this movie, love the new AMC series, and there is room to love twilight too, which I do. The Twilight movies are quite good, actually. I love them too. Please don’t condescend.
I just want to say that REMEMBER Louis is narrating the story,
Why Louis never runaway from Lestat if he was so evil or is Louis actually just telling us the parts of Lestat that he didn't like.
Actually there is a second book that is "The vampire Lestat" where we see the point of view of Lestat, and we have a more clear perspective.
He actually relished killing evildoers, as he showed Louis with the old lady and her fop, and Lestat explains many of the people Louis describes him killing cruelly (such as the hookers) were either thieves or killers themselves. While Lestat is capricious and narcissistic as HELL, and he refuses to let Louis go, all he is trying to do is help him let go of his human guilt and freely live his life as a vampire. He makes the point that a predator is not evil for killing and eating its prey, which is what vampires do (of course, when it's two fully conscious, sapient beings it's much different, but it IS in their nature), and that is what he tries to teach him. The problem is Louis hates his own vampire nature and is extraordinarily attached to his human guilt (which ironically makes him beautiful to other vampires, such as Armand), and while he loves Lestat deeply, he also hates him for turning him in the first place (kind of a hypocrite too...since he was fine with doing the same thing to Claudia, and he didn't kill himself either, which would have been as easy as standing out in the sun)
I can't believe this movie is twenty eight years old.
This is still on of my favourite Vampire movies.

Great movie... but HORRIBLE to cast Tom. Great actor but certainly actors don't work in certain roles. Robert Pattinson is a good actor but HORRIBLE batman AL pacino is a great actor...HORRIBLE playing a southerner. Tom Selleck GREAT ACTOR would of been a horrible indiana jones. If they made Pitt lestat and Christian slater as Louis and Tom cruise as the interviewer. I think this film would be right there with Dracula, Fright night and the all time great vampire pictures. I still love the script and brad Pitt in his role... Kirsten Dunst killed it too
apparently Anne Rice (the author of the novel this movie was based on) heard that Tom Cruise was going to be Lestat and was adamantly against it. she thought he could never play an adequate Lestat.. but after she saw the movie she was thrilled at his performance. Cruise absolutely crushed this performance
My friends and I were outraged when we heard Tom Cruise was going to play Lestat. We had to admit after seeing the movie that he was a great Lestat.
She wanted someone like Rutger Hauer. I was not happy when Cruise signed for the movie but he did a good job.

It took him a long, long time to convince people that he's a huge talent, not just a pretty boy.
You really believe that? Lol. She had to backtrack so she didn't get sued for sabotaging the revenues of the movie. Tom Cruise was effing terrible as lestat.
Back in '94 when this movie came out I went and saw it in the theater. The lobby was full of giggling teenage girls eager to see Cruise and Pitt. When the movie ended, they exited in a very pale and somber manner. Apparently this movie still has that power.
If they were still giggling afterwards I would have been scared. I feel that it speaks more to a mature audience, while something like Twilight would have been those girls' cup of tea.

I like how excited you were in the beginning, that's Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt together and being strangely intimate! You were downright giddy at the idea of them acting those scenes together. And then pretty soon it wasn't Tom Cruise anymore, it was a monster. It was still Brad, but that wasn't Tom Cruise, and you never called him that again. That says a lot about his performance.

I really can't believe the two of you couldn't figure out the play was how the French Vampires sustained themselves within society, they fed in public right in front of people who came to watch what they thought was a play about Vampires....genius.

It is explained better in the books. If you are just watching the movie it can be a bit strange as you don't have Lestat's experiences with them or more of Louis's internal monologue to explain what is going on.

I have to admit that I struggle to find a Tom Cruise performance that I don't like. Granted, I haven't seen his entire filmography, but I have seen most of it and even despite the fact that he's a religious loon in the real world I can't help but love him as an actor.
He plays excellent villains, like in Collateral one of his best baddies

The greatness of this story is that there IS NO CLOSURE! Being a vampire is seductive, intoxicating. Most people would want it if they had the choice, but this story shows how miserable the existence would be.

The scene when Tom comes back from the swamp and is at the piano is the best part of the movie I feel. And Kirsten Dunst’s acting is excellent.
The reason why Lestat survives is explained in the books, is that he has drank from a far older vampire and gained some of their strength, power, and resilience.
Yes! Magnus his original maker was powerful. Sunlight and fire couldn't kill Magnus; it would burn him but he would slowly regenerate back to life. Lestat also, drank from Marius who was also powerful!! And, if I'm correct Lestat had a little sample of Akasha's blood too before he made Louise. Correct me if I'm wrong on this one!

One thing that isn't made clear in this film is the difference in how strong different vampires are. Lestat is VASTLY stronger than Louie, as was Armand. These versions of vampires grow in strength with age, allowing them to survive things like fire that would kill a newborn vampire. Love your channel, keep up the awesome reactions!

These girls are fun to watch sometimes, but this is why I'm a Tomboy....overly feminine women usually have more of a childlike mind
The whole Paris vampire theater thing is based on a real gothic theater trend in the later 1800s called Theatre of the Macabre, and specifically the Grand Guignol theater in Paris during this period. That (and other) theaters put on shows of horror, murder, and grusome tales. There were also museum-like setups that created tableaus recreating scenes of gothic horror and actual grusome murder scenes. This is the period of Poe, Stoker, Lovecraft, and the Penny Dreadfuls. Horror and the macabre was very popular. Now, of course, we have horror movies and novels like those of Stephen King and Anne Rice.
And to answer the girls question on why they are putting on such a show should be pretty obvious. It allows them to essentially be what they are, vampires. And they can do it in the full view of the public without raising suspicion. Pretty clever.
Lovecraft was the 1930s. He was a contemporary of Howard, who wrote the Conan the Barbarian stories.
The reason Armand was attracted to Louis was because Louis was a new vampire from the New World. Armand was an old Vampire from Old Europe(Ancient Rome according to the book, if my memory serves me right). Like most immortals they had outlived their era and ended up in a new world inhabited by the new generation whose culture is alien to them. Think about it, you are an ancient vampire who grew up in a world with horse drawn carriages, message pigeons and opera stage entertainment. Then you wake up one day and people ride in horseless carriages(cars), airplanes, watch movies, television, use computers, smartphones and the internet for entertainment. You need someone born from that new generation to help you navigate thru the modern world. Most of his opera company companions were old vampires like him, texhnological dinosaurs who had to hide behind the stage plays to survive. They don't know anything else. So Armand was willing to sacrifice those old useless parasites and the old obsolete way of life for a new modern one with Louis by his side. It's why Lestat was sitting in the dark at the old house waiting for Louis to come back in 1988, because he couldn't cope with all the changes in modern society alone. It's why rich old men prefer young and innocent girls over their old wives. It warms their blood, makes them feel young and gives them a new sense of adventure. And the tool Louis used to kill the other vampires was a farming Scythe, used in most depiction of Death in ancient myths, where Death is shown as a skeleton in a hooded robe carrying a scythe in one hand.
On farms, scythes were used to cut down wheat stalks when harvesting.
They were used before machinery was used on farms.
Plus, Armand was just plain in love with Louis.
No, Marius was from ancient Rome. (He isn't in the movie, but he was Lestat's maker.) Armand lived in the 13th century in France, I believe. In the book, he was an angelic-looking teenager with long curly red hair.

there are three simple reasons Armand and Lestat preferred Louis
1. It's implied Armand and Lestat were gay
2. Louis was attractive
3. Louis was emotional and self-hating
Lestat was turned by Magnus who then kills himself and leaves his fortune to Lestat which is messed up because he should of stuck around and showed him the ways of being a vampire.
Cruise makes for a great villain. It’s a shame such roles for him are so few.
He makes a great villian in real life too.

You say “I’m empty, that’s how it ends” Anne Rice wrote this right after her own little girl died. That was pretty much her frame of mind, she was empty and life kept going on anyway.

This movie has true vampires.
Even after all this time I consider this Kirsten’s greatest role. She had the chops to be considered a serious actress even at this young age. I also thought some of the smaller players in the film like Antonio Banderas, Steven Rea, and Thandie Newton were amazing in this film. Great pick.
I didn’t realize Newton was in this. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, I need to give it another watch. The main thing I remember is tittering at Tom Cruise’s performance in the theater.
@@ziggystardog I remember showing this to my younger friend at the time and it turned out it was her first R film ever. I later found out her parents let her watch because I made a special note to bring the tape with me when I visited. I felt so bad because it’s both high violence and nudity but she never said a word about being grossed out or embarrassed. If I’d known, I would’ve never recommended that.
I really liked some of the smaller players too Thandie Newton and Indra Ove were both fantastic I always remembered them from their performances in Interview and looked out for their movies after.
She impressed Tom Cruise too. He's kept in touch with her ever since, and sends her and her family a special cake every Christmas. She said they look forward to it every year. They call it "The Cruise Cake"
@@clevelandcbi It’s funny. Henry Cavill was just interviewed where Cruise sent him a cake for Christmas after Fallout. And at first Cavill didn’t want to open or eat it because he assumed it was a “healthy” cake because of Tom’s dietary restrictions. But then Cavill’s friend convinced him to unwrap it and the cake turned out to be super decadent and rich. So much so that Cavill ate the rest of it up by the next day. Lol

Absolutely one of the best Vampire Films made and one of my favourites together with the Lost Boys. It's just a shame that more films of the Vampire Chronicles were not produced. Watching your reaction shows how other softer Vampire films have changed peoples ability to appreciated this and others in the genre.
The confusion about the whole concept with Armand makes more sense if you try to imagine actually living for over 400 years and never truly being alive. Armand longed to feel a sense of belonging to the world that he has seen live and die over many generations. Louie summarized it when he said "no, you are dead and you want me to quicken you once more." As if to breathe the illusion of life back into a centuries old vampire who no longer belongs to the greater world around him. It was Armand's desperation to have this with Louie that drove him to get rid of Claudia so that Louie would hopefully cling to him. Claudia being a taboo even among vampires because she was made so young was a convenient justification for his actions.

Three years after watching this movie and reading all of the books that make up Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, I went to New Orleans and took a tour of all the places she wrote about in Interview.
I could never consider Twilight, etc. to be credible vampire stories. I'm a vampire snob, I guess.
I am actually not surprised that it was confusing for the two of you...when this movie came out it had a built-in fan base that was multiple books deep into the author, Anne Rice's world of vampires, with a sprawling created history and culture of them. So they knew all this rich backstory when they walked into the theater for Interview With the Vampire.
Without it, I can see exactly where and how it's confusing. But Anne Rice changed the concept of the vampire forever with her books - things like Twilight would simply not exist without the world she created.
For my part, the movie adaptation I'd love to see - done right - is The Tale of the Body Thief. The moment where Lestat stops lying to himself and realizes he wants to be who and what he is.
I do hope that despite the confusion, that you were able to also enjoy the movie. It's an amazing adaptation!
31:20 That tool is a scythe. It's used to harvest crops like wheat. In mythology "Death" or "The Grim Reaper" carries a scythe, in fact that's the same scythe they were using in the stage plays as Death earlier in the movie. Reap means harvest, Death "reaps" souls like a farmer reaps wheat.

Interview with the vampire is a great movie, but it’s only a small part of a greater story. And Louis is only but one part of that story. The vampire chronicles by Anne Rice is really all about Lestat, a tormented, lustful but loving, powerful, and sometimes cruel being who has lived an extraordinary life, even for a vampire. He is a conflicted, well-rounded hero who has flaws and weaknesses, and a great redemption arc. ❤️❤️❤️
I always want to have a picture of Tom as Lestat in my mind, he was just too good in this role, and his collateral role, man he is good at such roles

I have to admit it was a little funny hearing the lighthearted vibes while the opening credits were still going. I thought oh boy they don't know what type of film this is.
Claudia might be one of the most tortured vampires in all of fiction. Changed before even becoming a teenager, and basically kept maturing in a childs body. Probably why it's frowned upon to change people so young. You're supposed to stop ageing, but i guess a childs mind is forced to age mentally, even stuck in that physical age
So in the books they do only kill murders but since Louis can’t read minds he always thinks Lestat is a monster but the majority of them are society’s worst.
That’s from Lestat’s interview in which he makes himself out to be an innocent victim. Can’t really take his word for it.

Many of the vampires in this series only kill evil people. Lestat pretty much keeps to this creed as well, but likes to do his own thing. Among other vampires, he obtains the nickname, "the brat prince".
One other thing that's important in the series. The first book, that this movie is based on, is from Louis' perspective. Most of the other books in the series are from Lestat's, and while he still has a huge ego, he's much more "human" than Louis makes him out to be.
Exactly. I wish they had made the Vampire Lestat with Tom Cruise in that role so fans that only watch the movies could see his perspective. I remember finding that novel fascinating.

lmao. Watching especially wholesome people watch movies like this always makes me have to face up to how messed up I am. :'D I love this movie so much, and Lestat is my favorite character. Honestly, I find him at least a little sympathetic, and morally questionable yet still charismatic bad-ish guys really do it for me, lol. This movie was also an awakening of sorts for me, the first inkling I had toward realizing that I really enjoy m/m content (because the subtext is so strong it's basically text).

Interview with a Vampire is about real classic vampires.
These two ladies are very genuine but you sort of got to remember their upbringing as "All Canadian" type of girls and wholesome. Dark Themes can be bewildering for them at times. Can you even imagine them doing Game of Throne's? I think they would like it but there is a chance it would be bewildering to them as well. Basically because they have been sheltered from these Dark Themes(in movies I mean) all their lives. So what happens is they are being exposed to stuff for the first time and they find it beyond their knowledge base and don't really understand what some of us consider basic tropes of the more dark themes. But for every reaction like this that falls a little bit flat, there are 100 reactions that are so much fun because they are being exposed to something new. Also, they are addicted to the "Happy Ending" and romance movies and they are not used to the good characters not being all good. That can be jarring for them as well. Still, alone or with her sister, Popcorn is one of the best reactors out there.

And as much as I enjoy them, I feel like after years of doing a reaction channel they still have a very black and white expectation of "good guys and bad guys" and this kind of naive, why isn't everyone good, why would he be doing that cluelessness that is often charming and forgivable (sometimes even entertaining) but in movie like this becomes irritating and even exhausting. Like, how have you managed to reach reasonably advanced adulthood and can't understand....darkness, evil, lust, corruption, hunger for power, manipulation etc. I hope they continue to expand their minds and perspectives.
If there is such a thing as a perfectly acted movie, this is it. This is packed with powerhouse performances.
I think Pitt was a weak link. Not uniformly bad, but he had some really dull moments, as well as moments of cringe. It didn't help that his tortured character was so passive for most of the film. I generally like him, but this role had none of the aspects that I enjoy about his performances.

The weapon that Luis was using to kill the theater vampires was a scythe, which was typically a tool for cutting wheat and other kinds of grass. The Grim Reaper is always holding one in traditional depictions.

This more than any other Vampire story really deals with the "you are what you are" that Lestat talks about. Yeah, you were a human. You still feel for them, may even consider yourself one on a certain level. But you've moved up the food chain. You are what you are. You need what you need. Louis is able to find a way to satisfy who he is and what he needs while still retaining some humanity. Lestat is just sort of all in. Look at the fresh produce for today. "Shall we sample some French cuisine?" They are food and nothing more to him. And then throw in Claudia and all the weird issues turning a child into a vampire creates. Kirsten Dunst did a fabulous job in this role. Especially for being so young.
I like your realization half way through that answers your frequent early question. Why does he stay with him? Because he is the only other of his kind he knows. The only one who can understand him who knows what he is going through, as messed up as Lestat can be.
Despite the horror/spooky vibes, this movie is more of an existential drama, with some philosophical undertones. By the way, "Interview With The Vampire" is the first one in a series of 13 main novels plus other works, so it's definitely a lot of material.
Only the first 3 really matter though.

The scene of Claudia‘s death is still to me one of the most heartbreaking scenes in movie history😢😢 it’s no wonder Louis did what he did… and the tool you speak of that he used to kill the other vampires is a scythe. If you’ve ever seen the pictures of the Grim Reaper aka Death he is always seen holding a scythe. It’s an old style tool used for centuries for harvesting grain & even cutting tall grass.

Claudia was inspired by Anne Rices late daughter who passed at 5 due to a rare blood disease. That's why her character is so tragic.

Interview with the Vampire is a book that's followed by the book "The Vampire Lestat" (part of a larger series). The books told from Lestat's perspective are much more cohesive and interesting. He's a wild character, but he's right about Louis whining too much hah. There's a lot Louis doesn't understand about Lestat's behavior, which Lestat himself is able to explain much better in his own story. If you're into reading, it's the better place to start.
"How old is she?!" In the film, Claudia is about 9 or 10, I think, and in the new reboot series, she's 14. But in the book, Claudia is FIVE. She becomes a Vampire at age FIVE. And this is a central reason why turning a child is so dangerous (this idea is repeated ACROSS Vampire lore, not just Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles): The younger you are when you are turned, the more uncontrollable your Thirst is.

When Lestat got burned normally that would kill most vampires. However Lestat is stronger than most and has abilities beyond most other vampires. He's strong enough to fight vampires that are thousands of years older all because he drank from Akasha Queen of the Damned. She is the very first vampire and is from Egypt around the time the pyramids was built. She is so strong that just by drinking her blood. Lestat was able to walk in the sunlight. The books are in my opinion the best vampire literature ever written.
Queen of the Damned? Really? I've seen the movie. I liked it when it came out. Haven't seen it since. I didn't know both movies were connected. Interesting. Everyone keeps talking about how great these novels are. I'm finding myself to be curious now and possibly go to my library and check them out if they have the novels. The books sound like they're much more clear with the history of the vampires and seems more detailed in the characters. More fleshed out, no pun intended lol. I wanna have a good read.

What I don't like is anything like Vampire Diaries or Twilight shit. I haven't read those books either but I hated the show and the movie. I don't like that monsters like the ones we are talking about, aka vamps, are portrayed in a romantic, cute and sexy way. Vampires are suppose to be vile, disgusting, evil and perverse. What I expect from these novels is just that. I don't want a happy ending. I want to read a really great, tragic story. I want it to come off as gothic horror.

Cassie and Carly asking if Louie is the original tormented vampire had me shaking my head. AFAIK Barnabas Collins in the soap opera Dark Shadows (late 60s-early 70s) was the OG tormented vampire. The novel "Interview with the Vampire" was published in 1976.

Lestat isn't as evil as hes made out to be. In the books Lestat says Louis told lies about him in this story. Louis is still Louis but just a bitter ex of Lestats. The women that Lestat tortures and puts in the coffin are actually pickpockets and murderers. Also he is the anti-hero of the book series.
So he was the judge, jury and executioner. The moral compass for everyone.

Yeah in the second book about Lestat, he says that what Louie failed to mention, was that he only killed those who were evil. It was hinted at here, with the reading minds, & the lady with the poodles, & her young escort. Lestat didn't have as much of a conscience as Louie, nor was he as tormented, but Lestat did have a conscience none the less. Louie wouldn't have completely necessarily known or understood this about Lestat, because he himself couldn't read minds. Lestat turning both Louie & Claudia, he viewed as a gift, not actually "killing them".
I recommend Queen of the Damned. But it doesn't have Louie & it has a different person playing Lestat. I'm not sure that in Queen of the Damned, that Lestat only kills those that are evil though...

They unfaithfully fuse the Vampire lestat novel and Queen of the damned book together but throw out so many things. But amazing soundtrack. The guy who plays lestat is pretty cool and charismatic though.
It could be argued that the novel Interview with a Vampire essentially defined the modern vampire genre. Vampires are romantic figures, but they are also undeniably tragic. The ethical issues of feeding on humans is something that Anne Rice spent quite a lot of time on in the story. Ultimately, Louis couldn't escape the nature of what he became, and that in itself is tragic. I feel the movie does jettison quite a bit of the details in the story, but there's only so much information one can pack into a 2 hour movie. The result is a movie I'd consider good, but not great. I actually recommend reading the novel.

I was so into these books back in the day. Rice’s writing is fantastic. She took a character that I hated in the first book & then I completely flipped in the 2nd.
It’s an unusual premise as most vampire stories are about hunting down a vampire via some sort of authority figure. This story is completely from the perspective of the vampires themselves.
Fun fact: Anne Rice wrote this story out of the grief of losing her daughter to leukemia.

Kirsten Dundst was phenomenal in this. I cannot picture a single child actress today matching her performance in this role; and yes, that includes the TV adaptation of the Anne Rice series.

It's important to keep in mind that this story is entirely told from Louis's point of view. The sequel book is narrated by Lestat, where it is revealed that he only preyed on criminals, and was not quite the monster than the self-pitying Louis believed him to be.
Actually, Lestat knew everything about where vampires came from, he just had no inclination to talk about it with Louis. For one, Lestat was created by a self-made vampire named Magnus, a Renaissance era scientist who studied vampires and then voluntarily made himself a vampire using a young vampire that he'd captured and used as a test subject. Magnus created Lestat as his final experiment before committing suicide by walking into a fireplace and letting the flames consume him. Lestat also turned his own mother, Gabrielle, into a vampire, since she was dying of tuberculosis, and she became his lover after becoming a vampire.
Lestat finally learned of the origin of vampires from a vampire named Marius, a vampire from ancient Roman times who had been the caretaker of the King and Queen of Vampires, Enkil and Akasha, rulers of ancient Kemet (Egypt) in 4,020 BC. They had been attacked by assassins and left to die, when a powerful dark spirit named Amel entered Akasha's body, transforming her into the first vampire, and she then turned her husband, Enkil, into the second vampire.

I like the movie and the casting in Queen of the Damned more, than I liked interview with a vampire. Lastat, was evil but at least he was a little bit more sympathetic. In interview he was just evil, and Claudia, she was worse than he was.

Made me smile when you said they could hunt murderer, because that’s something Luis didn’t know, but remember Lestat is a telepath, he does hunt killer.
I was a bit of a goth loner in high school, and, was a HUGE fan of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, so, this came out at the PERFECT time! I remember being SO skeptical when I heard the casting of Cruise as Lestat, but, then, being SO impressed by his performance.
When the interviewer near the end says to Louis, "do you know what I'd give to be immortal?" and Louis responds, "have you been listening?" He might as well have been talking to you nice ladies...lol. The whole point of his story was that there is no happiness in a vampire's existence. They are all miserable in one way or another...it is truly a curse. The reason the bookk by Anne Rice was such a mega-hit was that it DID NOT romanticize the vampire, as so many vampire stories do. We believe Louis is going to be the romanticized vampire as we read (or watch the film), but the whole reason he is telling the story is to show the opposite. There cannot be a happy ending for vampires.

That's a bit unfair. They understood being a vampire made Louis miserable and even commented on that when Daniel asks to become one, they just said they prefer happy endings and were hoping for one.

In the movie Claudia is maybe 8 or 10 years old, but in the book she's closer to 6 years old.
Armand cares about Louis cos Louis is very special and because he understands the age he lives in. The other vampires were decadent and lived in the past sort to speak. Louis adapts to every age he is in because his soul is still in part human, so Armand wanted Louis to help him understand the times they lived in. Take into account Armand is very old, more than any of the other vampires there. If you are curious to learn more about the motivations and the past of Armand and Lestat I recommend the second book of the vampire chronicles. Even the first one is worth reading even after watching the movie :)
All of the books are worth reading in comparison to the movies. In fact, I'd go so far as to say after this movie, the other movies aren't worth watching.
I loved these books growing up and was thrilled when this movie came out. I was very young when I saw it. I always hoped they might continue the saga. But they did make a Queen of the Damn later but it wasnt the same cast back. This was an excellent cast. Louis's story continues and he finds some answers. The scream and jump when Lestat show's up as a surprise at the door was great!
Interview with a Vampire was the first novel of Anne Rice's famous "Vampire Chronicles" series, of which Lestat was the main lead. The book doesn't end with Lestat turning the young journalist so the guy goes and publishes his interview with Louis as a fantasy novel. In the next book of the series, "The Vampire Lestat", Lestat becomes enraged by the slanderous portrayal of his character after reading Louis' book and publishes his own autobiography. Not just to set the record straight about the things Louis said about him and give HIS view of the events, but also because Louis' book gave him the idea to start up shit in the vampire community by casually revealing age old secrets. I would've loved if that book had been made into a movie. They kinda told a bastardized version of that story in the garbage Queen of the Damned-movie which was a mix of "The Vampire Lestat" and the direct sequel "Queen of the Damned", but failed to capture any of the original story or the magic of this movie here.

The role of the interviewer, played by Christian Slater, was supposed to be played by River Phoenix but he died before filming began.
In my eyes this is one of the greatest Old Style Vampire movie ever created. I thank the Director and Producers for reading and making an Anne Rice Novel into a Great Movie. Great Post, Ladies.
Small fact about this movie. Christian Slater stepped in to fill the roll of the reporter in the last minute. It was originally cast for River Phoenix but he had died right before the movie was about to start filming.
If you think about it the contrast between Lestat's complete disregard for human life with Louis's love and respect for human life is actually quite an interesting angle, I like this movie because it shows you the dark side of being a vampire and the inner struggle. I think while starting to show age, this still holds up against the best of the vampire movies to this day. my favorite execution is how the music score perfectly matched and hyped each scene and never felt out of place. thank you for another awesome reaction.

I've read somewhere that Anne Rice wrote the book partially to deal with the death of her daughter. This is why we have Claudia, forever trapped in a child body.
The tool Louis used on the theater vampires is called a scythe (sigh-th). It's meant for wide-sweep cutting of grains like wheat or rye in the fields. Smaller, one-hand versions have a much more curved or hooked blade, and are called a sickle.

This movie is based on the first book, and it's based on Louis's perspective. The next few books are from Lestat's perspective, and while he isn't always likable, he's definitely entertaining. Lestat can read human's minds and Louis can't, and he says he prefers to hunt killers, but he isn't exactly a reliable narrator 😄
Also, this movie is pretty much responsible for the start of the popularity of the sexy angsty vampire in movies and tv shows that started in the late 90s.
This was Kristen Dunst's best role by far.... She was such a talented little actress....

I remember reading years ago, when I came across the books, that very sadly Anne Rice's daughter Michele died of leukemia just before her 6th birthday, and that months before Anne had a dream that her daughter had 'something wrong with her blood'. Rice consequently took a previously written short story and turned it into her first novel, the bestselling ''Interview with the Vampire''.

This movie is based on one of the books from Anne Rice. She wrote a whole series of books about these characters that are excellent. Another movie taken from them is Queen of the Damned. It is a more recent movie than this one, but I think you two would enjoy it.

Back in the day, Anne Rice who wrote this and MANY other vampire novels, was one of the biggest authors on the planet. She wrote this in 1976. I just found out she died about a year ago. :( She was 80.
You have to remember, this is just the first in a series of books Anne Rice wrote with recurring characters.
I started playing Vampire: The Masquerade, both pencil and paper RPG and LARP around this period of time. It was a curious half-decade. :)

I think the real tragedy of Louis is that he wants to die but has no courage to take his own life. That's why he met Lestat. That's why he endured all those lives as a vampire and didn't walk out on the sun. That's why he goes on despite being empty.
And also why Armand let Louis kill those vampires? Because they were trash, mere comedians unable to take anything seriously, driven mainly by their basic instincts. Sooner or later somebody would notice and kill them all, Armand included. Despite being in the verge of taking his own "life" Armand is a wise man. He knows that underlings like that are useless. They don't really listen to Arman. They make up their own rules. Like the rule that you never kill another vampire. What an absurd if the punishment is exactly what they punish for. It's like stealing from a thief and calling it punishment. Those guys are basically a vampire gang with no real leader. Because Armand is one in name only. Even if he told them not to touch Louis' women - they wouldn't listen. They basically committed suicide by killing them and Armand knew that.
Basically it could take one year, a hundred or a hundred thousand but Louis would eventually be freed and he'd come after those vampires. All Armand did was make it happen sooner in a hope that maybe he can benefit from Louis' revenge.
Fun Fact: One of the major plot twists of the book series is that Lestat is actually the hero (Some say Anti-Hero) of the series because it turn out he kills bad people, in later book it turns out Louis lied about Lestat, especially the part about how Lestat would just randomly go out and kill women.
But I agree with you guys about the "Woman on stage scene", everytime I watch that part my mind is screaming "Someone please save that girl" I always felt bad for her.
All true, but I wouldn't call Louis a liar on his part. The guy didn't know all the facts and thats because Lestat kept him in the dark about a lot of things. Lestat took much joy in keeping secrets and manipulation, thats why Louis distrusted him and always had negative suspicions of him. Cant really blame Louis for that because Lestat is the Brat Prince after all. A good example of this is how Louis believed that Lestat chose him for his wealth and properties, not knowing that Lestat had more money and properties than Louis ever did. Louis didn't know this because Lestat never told him.
The strength of Rice's vampires is dependent on the strength (a function of age) of the vampire that made them, in most covens the younger vampires added members. Lestat was made by a very old vampire who promptly took his own life before teaching him much of anything and before going to America he had fed on one of the first four original vampires giving him a further boost. One on one Luis and Claudia (If being child size were not a factor) were probably more than a match for any of the Parisian vampires with the exception of Armand. The movie Queen of the Dammed fills in more of Rice's lore. On a side note, Rice did not want Tom Cruise (and neither did many fans) to play the role of Lestat, though after the movie was released she changed her mind.

This film is an absolute masterpiece imo and possibly one of the best contemporary movie adaptations I've ever seen. Thank god I saw this first as my gateway into vampire lore and not Twilight with all of its teen melodrama sensibilities.
Except the Tom cruise casting
Christian Slater took over from River Phoenix who died shortly before filming began. RIP River.
Also, having seen this in 1994 and now 25 years later being unable to eat wheat (which is such a huge component of contemporary food), it hits different. When food becomes anything more than a lazy afterthought, it really has an impact.
