  • Last night our first Dexter calf of the season was born! Life is popping up (and popping out) all over the farm. I introduce you to our new calf, as well as our new piglets and chicks. I also give some information on what to expect regarding Dexter calving and the calf's first days of life, some issues we've had with our sows' mothering abilities and their piglets, and some tough decisions we're facing regarding pasturing both the cattle and broilers.

    I just love to see this type video showing the animals and the explanation of good and poor. I fully understand the choice you will make with Missy, like all animals on a farm it's a business decision.

      Manycallmemom, that video is coming! I want to wait until the cattle are on pasture, so I can show all we go through to find a calf in the tall grass, bring it in, and tag/castrate/dehorn. Thanks for watching!

    From the beef lot I would scrape out that top 4 inches of mud and bring in a load of bank run gravel. My cattle thrived on it and we never had mud because of it.

      Interesting GWC 3. Did it clog up with manure over time? Bank run gravel is very cheap here.

      @@JustaFewAcresFarm Not if enough of the aggregate is big enough. You want an aggrage that mixed sizes so it will pack. Plus you want it high enough. Think of it as if it were a concrete slab. You would pour it so water drains away, no pooling. When the cattle go to pasture you can still give it a scraping with a york rake without losing all the gravel.

      Yep. Hilarie and I talked about it this afternoon, and I think we're going to let the cattle out to pasture on Tuesday when the weather is better, and feed them hay in the grove area. As for the broilers, the nighttime temps are going to be in the 30's, too cold for them to go out. So we'll open up the other pen and keep them in there for another week.

    Just found your channel this morning I was looking for some help with my broilers lost a couple two weeks old they keep opening up their mouth like they’re having a hard time breathing “ I know it’s normal to lose some but I was just wondering if I could find something out maybe I’m doing wrong vitamin water are used to do the Apple cider vinegar and my grain is non-GMO starter I’ve been with the same guy for eight years! And it’s also nice to have somebody just a couple hours away from me so we kind of have the same weather I’m in Duanesburg New York by Albany we just have 6 acres I’d love to have a milking cow but my husband won’t allow it I have layers I do broilers and turkeys and Pigglets but he likes everything gone before the winner!!!!! I move my layers up by the house for the winner I love the premier fencing I got hit by a weasel to they’re sneaky little buggers ! Thank you for the videos and all your time I appreciate it blessings 🙏🏻🇺🇸🗽👍🏼

      Hi Michelle, I'm glad you found our channel! Usually cornish cross broilers will gasp like that (we call it "guppying") when they have congestive heart failure. If you butcher one with that condition you'll find a lot of fluid in the body cavity, and that makes it difficult for them to breathe. We don't eat or sell ones that get that condition. There's no cure for it once it happens, but it can be prevented by limiting their feed so they don't grow too fast & over stress their heart. It can be pneumonia too, but that's less likely.

    Might I suggest, us viewers would like a chance to sample some of your produce. Yes, I know about carbon foot print blah... But I'm more than sure we would not mind paying above your Farmers Market prices plus ship& handling. Sales and margins would increase, buy so would your headaches of course...

    What breed of pig, what registery do you go through for your Dexter's, I understand the pbca doesn't acknowledge if you dehorn .

    • @JustaFewAcresFarm
      @JustaFewAcresFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The PDCA allows dehorning of registered animals. Our Dexters are registered with the ADCA. Our pigs are mixed breed, Old Spot, Duroc & Hereford.
