    You're killing it, keep it up. Maybe don't be so aggressive setting the hook. I know you need a good set but you may be over doing it. I feel like you're either gonna fall out of the kayak or all the fish in the lake are gonna have tore lips. Give it a shot, short hard jerk instead of a hernia maker pull.

    • @tommccrea9738
      @tommccrea9738 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not that the hook set is too hard, it's too early. When fishing frogs, we all want to set the hook when we see the blow up. I am as guilty as anyone in this regard, but I fish buddy tournaments with a guy (Steve Benner), who has mastered this, and his hook up and landing ratio is very high. Wait until you feel them!

    Three minutes in.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just a though, in your time off set aside a whole 'set' of other fishing rods (the same set or collection as what you'd normally work with for all of the typical baits and lures that you throw). Except, rather than size or spec those fishing poles to what you work with in normal circumstances. I get it, the backbone or stiffness of the fishing pole is a thing, that say when hunting after a species such as Musky one would lean on more. As the last thing you want in that instance is a noodle that wraps around like a bow, as you're trying to bring a Musky into a landing net. Each time you bring that Musky towards a landing net and it does it's thing of being a steam-train that charges back into the cover. The stiffer fishing pole for Musky or Pike can make that fish work each time and thus play out the fish. And that's why at three minutes into this, I'm looking at fishing poles that don't even budge almost, even when it gets the most Almighty crack (typically with that hookset for a freshwater bass type of species, with that amount of force I should have seen a fishing pole that was bent in two). And I didn't see that. What I saw was a fishing pole that barely flexed.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a big akin to asking a pro golfer to re-build their swing, or their putting technique and short-game. However, it's something that I think will need to be explored. One has to let go of at least one or two increments of stiffness in that freshwater bass fishing pole. And get down to somethiing that is more under-powered than it is over. And see what happens next. That was a hookset that was worthy of a thirty pound mass of Musky fish lying underneath the water surface. As opposed to a small, compact, chunky bass fish. It's hard to replace and change over to different fishing poles just in one go. So the only way one can accomplish it, is to have a whole set of spares. That serve the purpose of being able to use them, to figure out what the ideal fishing rod type is. Bear in mind something else. That in kayaks on is standing on a place that is above the water surface level (that already provides the bass angler with a strategic position to hookset from). Trust me, standing waist depth in water with a fly rod or something, and having fish eat your fly at thirty forty yards away, and in fast moving water. You don't have nearly the same strategical position relative to one's fish ot hookset, as one does from a kayak. Where one is effectively poised and standing on the plane of the water surface. A lot of wading anglers in river would give a major organ, to have that advantage versus being 'in the water' and down at lower level. Even what you can see from a five to six foot height above the water surface when in a kayak, is a major advantage for seeing the 'eats'. Total it all up, one doesn't require the sort of rod stiffness that I'm seeing in these pictures. One can get by with way less.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the fishing poles with virtually no 'give' in them or flex, what you'll find is that you're multiplier reel is not able to 'pick up' the length of fishing line that it needs to. In order to capitalize on that initial tightening of the fishing line. That was achieved by that 03:00 minute hookset example. So what happens is when you hawl into a bass in that way, with a fishing rod with more flex it bends in two. And before the fishing rod has had the time in which to straighten back out again. You buy yourself about a half a second or so, which is enough time for the fishing reel to come back into engagement with the fish (and you can thus play the fish from the reel). Which is what Kris had attempted to do there, except the reel wasn't able to do a fast enough line pick-up to match with the stiffness of that fishing pole, and the ferocity of the hookset that was employed. Another thing you can try, as an alternative option is to switch to the highest ratio reel possible and go to a limp braid line. And that might increase the pickup speed (saltwater anglers actually use large diameter spinning reels for this reason as they reckon it's a faster line pick up per second than with baitcasting reels). So there are those kinds of options there. The problem though was that the reel wasn't fast enough to engage with the fish and maintain tension, after that initial hookset was completed.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As I said, if you re-learn how to work with 'slower' action rods with less backbone. You do sacrifice the ability to hookset a bit. But it also maintains some tension, while the slowness of the reel itself, trying to pick up line and engage with fish. Following those sudden takes. At the moment though, that fishing pole is too fast action, doesn't have enough flex. And that time gap is not being bridged. If you slow down the footage and re-look at it, it should be apparent.

    • @academicmailbox7798
      @academicmailbox7798 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One other thing that would help, in that situation where there is a big fish take at that close proximity. If the fishing pole is too long in length, it won't work in one's favor either. It might be an example of a case where one carries a purposefully under-length fishing pole. Just in case that take comes too close to the kayak. Like it did in that situation at three minutes. What the shorter length fishing pole does in that situation, is it takes the fishing pole more out of the equation. When it comes to the hookset. And it brings the fishing reel and line pickup back into the equation more. You can't do that super fast reaction hookset (to use a ski term, that gets you out over your ski's). The longer length of that rod and the speed of the hooset action meant that the reel couldn't engage in the follow-up enough to hold on to the bass. And they get free. A shorter fishing pole, like the bass anglers used in the old, old days. May have been an advantage there (and I can see some logic now, in how those old anglers used short rods). They were practically standing right beside of bass in those days, when they caught they from those old bass boats. That were jumped up Jon boats mostly, or a lot like modern-day kayaks to be fair.
