I talked to the devs about the cartoonish nature of the game. I would be curious to hear more feedback from people around what part of the look is too cartoonish? My personal feedback was the player character models. I feel like it those were harder looking it would improve it a lot.
Additionally, the team is for sure making sure to figure out the vision for the actual game

The character models, you're right on. Perhaps the colors at times. While it's dark and foggy, hey here comes some ultraviolet shine.

Being in beta, they have room to work on the front end. More importantly... the back end or the games dynamics and game play are what need to be the selling point for me now a days. The flashy looks and 4k graphics are played out and no longer that desired anymore. I can still play D2R in legacy mode and have a great time. So I would wait and see what they do to make the game interesting via gameplay. I can get over the cartoonish look so long as the gameplay is very fun and rewarding.

Two of the things that are a bit cartoony are when they break the purple crystals and the purple wispy stuff comes out, and the green orbs animation flying towards you after you kill a mob. Might just be unfinished graphics? Are they going for a cartoony look, or trying to get away from it? It's not MY preference, but some of the most popular games of all time have been cartoony.

Interesting concept. My huge fear is that "open world/destructible terrain" becomes the crutch that the rest of the gameplay leans on, and it can't support it. One of the reasons D2 did what it did so well, was each area was crafted specifically to have a feel and a vibe that also matched your current progression. A lot of ARPGs lose this, particularly if they go the level scaling route.

There isn't (hope i'm wrong) . If one thing i have learned is that just because they created a masterpiece 20 years ago it doesn't mean they will do it all over again. One thing that made Diablo 1 and 2 stand out was their dark setting. The whole medieval dark gothic style and creatures

Not every single ARPG needs to be a dark, gothic Diablo rip-off to be fun or considered a good game.

@@brandonkruse6412 My point is that the reason Diablo 1 and 2 is the way it is, is due to their oppressive dark artyle and creature style and just overall setting of the game. If Diablo 1 + 2 was some cartoon trash like Torchlight it would have never had the success it did, it appeals to those that love real dark medieval gothic style. And this style has never been replicated in any other game. The little details you see all over the zones, the bodies that tell the stories of what the demons did or were doing to them. Like the jail levels, the bodies inside boiling pots in the jungles etc etc too much to count of what makes Diablo 1 + 2 pieces of art. Diablo 1 + 2 is very much like Dark Souls in the sense that many people tried replicate the style and failed miserably

I guess you haven’t played Path of Exile then. Everything you described is what Path of Exile fundamentally started with and has greatly innovated and improved to become objectively a better Diablo 2 while Diablo 2 has seen 0 updates or improvements aside from minor numerical changes.
I really think you are putting too much stock in things that most ARPG players simply do not care about. The little details are nice, but stopping and taking in the scenery is the opposite of how most people play these games and frankly it’s hard to appreciate those small details from a game played from a top-down perspective.

    • @xzxxx-km4vy
      @xzxxx-km4vy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@brandonkruse6412 I have played POE, artstyle is nothing like Diablo not even close. You clearly never played Diablo 1 and 2 with eyes wide open regarding the art style and overall mood setting of Diablo. It's hard to appreciate only for those that play games like spastics for those people a game where your character is a circle in a blank map would be enough but for the rest of us that actually play games and appreciate them not really.
Every wannabe Diablo game tried to copy the dark arstyle of Diablo and failed miserably because they have no understanding on how to replicate the dark gothic style that Diablo masterfully created. Every single enemy type in DIablo 2 is unique, only skeletons and zombies are arguably the only generic type of enemy in that game. Let me remind you that Project Diablo 2 has more than 100k players on the discord. There is a reason why every ARPG failed and still continues to fail while Diablo 2 doesn't lose its crown.

Thinking of this game as a kind of Dungeon Siege, Nox or TL1 is a good idea. Not every ARPG needs to be a live-long game. If the first game is just a wonderful play through experience, we got something good.
Although adding support for "iron man", "naked", "limited rarity" modes can just add as much replayability as 10 more builds that just screen clear with one button.

Itemisation will once again be key. The reason everyone played Diablo II so much was because of the rarity of rune drops and items, and the trading ecosystem that built around it. Items like Tyrael's Might could drop from hard enough areas and monsters, rather than a tokenistic legendary after every boss kill - which is not random enough and generates no dopamine. Soulbound items also need to go.

I really dig the art style. It's old-school while having some nice modern touches. Animations are clean enough to be readable, and some of the spell effects are impressive, even if derivative... derivative of games I enjoy, so no issues here.
The verticality is something, that if done right, could play an important role is setting the game apart, but outside of Starcraft implementing fog of war into higher areas, I can't think of an isometric game that really implemented anything meaningful to it. FPS games do it well because of player control of the "camera" and well-designed level creation. I'm willing to give them the chance to show me something cool at this point in time.

Idk if we turn out to be right, but I know it worth the try 100%, Im very much curious where does this concept can go, and how well they can implement it as an important game mechanic and not just have it as an interesting side quirk.

Either needs too much system resources to optimize or the concept itself ends up being hard to design around in a way that feels good. Like I imagine you could probably do something like bone wall or bone prison but it remains to be seen if that's more effective than just nuking the screen. Or in this case, doing that may prevent you from also being able to kill the mobs if you do.

Im pretty sure they said, "we're not worried about the ARPG aspects, we can do that really well, so we haven't focused on it yet." So, we'll see. It does also seem super ambitious with how far they are already thinking into the modding aspect with so little development.

thats literally the thing that would make this game stand out. theyre trying to do something different. and this might not be your typical arpg. we may find they get creative with genre by the time the final project arrives. lets maybe have some faith. because if they do a straightforward arpg, theres no way it could ever compete with d2. if they do something fresh, it could be special though

I am really surprised/not surprised at the negative responses about the few guys who got together and made 5, yes 5 Platinum selling worldwide legends thinking that they cannot repeat. I have been a computer gamer since '81/commodore vic 20, and KNEW what was going to happen when they sold out to activision. The "newer" gaming generation does not have a clue about the history. I have been hearing rumors of them breaking the mold again to show the current market how to really succeed. I can't wait.

The "proper physics" and destruction that reminds me of Red Faction (2001) back in the day was something that i really missed in a lot of games hence.
I love to see it in an ARPG setting, especially in such able hands.
This looks promising but at the same time it can be concerning, especially when you think of multiplayer settings - if you have a group of nutheads that can absolutely just toss you down a self dug well which you will never get out of - considering online communities... well... you can guess the rest...
As for cartoonish, i also feel some of the movements are way too quick (think of anime fighting scenes) and the poses look a bit wonky but i blame it on pre-alpha state for now. Detaillevel of character model vs. mobs is also still lacking so i think its just skipped for now or still heavily WIP.
I am looking very much forward on progression of this game

I feel that a lot of games already did some diablo2-like gameplay. But Blizzard always had the best artists in the world. The bigger barrier to designing a "new" Diablo 2 is the graphic/concept art. None of these games feels moody/scary/serious like D2 was/is. It's hard to compete with Blizzard in terms of art, none of these studios has the firepower ($$$$) to hire 150 top-notch artists

Not looking too interesting yet imo, def tech demo vibe. But I like the idea of player freedom to create, if carefully restricted to not allow a complete mess.
I try to imagine fun, destructible pvp arenas, where mobility decreases as the terrain crumbles, or certain character builds that would utilize terrain, like casting a comet on your opponent creating a crater where they stand, trapping them, then casting acid rain in the crater f.ex.

Interesting game idea, personally I was hoping for something more gritty and darker from the blizzard north team. I think the next big big game idea is a mix between Diablo 2 for its style of items, runes, and character class system (skills attributes) with a style of game like Valheim where the bosses are more interactive, the game has more exploration, you have building, sailing, different regions… you add hundreds of uniques and a decent storyline with coop and pvp, 3rd person super scaling dungeon crawler. It looks interesting but I will not get too hype over it. The "old blizzard north" crew has attempted an ARPG with new features at least twice before that I remember. Hellgate: London which was one if, if not the first, ARPG FPS. It was a cool premise but unfortunately the game fell flat on its face and I don't think it survived beta. If it did, it died shortly afterwards. The second was "Mythos" which was more traditional isometric ARPG but again it did not survive beta.
We will see how this does.
