  • Very-low-light but clear and bright footage of four local CSX trains well after dark on the Moonless night of Tuesday, November 22, 2022.
Y295 crossed the TECO diamond, then was caught street running at length on Polk Street in downtown Tampa. Elusive night video of CSX 2544 switching strings of cars at Trans-Flo yard, seen from E Adamo Dr and N 34th St. Heavily loaded, long locals L778 at Neve Wye and L781 under the Selmon Connector were captured moving slowly.
All footage was taken with Canon M6 Mark II cameras, with a Canon EF-M 32mm f1.4 lens (at f1.4) and a Rokinon 135mm f2 lens used with a Viltrox 0.71x speed booster, making a 100mm f1.4 'night vision' telephoto lens.

Thank you for noticing... I've been working hard on techniques to get low-noise video in extremely low natural light. The secret is f1.4 lenses, locations with some ambient light, and very careful post-processing. Adobe Premiere has great stabilization. Shooting 4k then downsampling to 1080p keeps the sharpness and the image quality good while also helping with the noise, even with In-camera and post stabilization.

I am a former Greyhound driver and this line ran directly in front of our old terminal. It's a busier line than you would think considering it runs directly through downtown.

Thanks - you've got some amazing videos on your channel as well! This was all shot with 2 Canon M6 Mark II APS-C mirrorless cameras hand-held. One M6ii had the legendary, super-sharp Canon EF-M 32mm f1.4 lens, the other a Rokinon 135mm f2 lens (a superb, sharp astrophotography lens at f2) coupled with a Viltrox 0.71x EF - EOS M2 speed booster, which converts the lens into a 100mm f1.4 lens! The combo, quite surprisingly, is sharp across the frame - the lens + booster seem to be a perfect match optically: unusual for teleconverters or booster adapters, which usually degrade the image noticeably. I shot 4k with in-camera digital image stabilization, then did more stabilizing and careful tone/color/exposure adjustments in Adobe Premiere. I chose shooting locations that had some ambient lighting from streetlights, but they were still challenging locations for night photography with any camera. But it's those superb fast lenses that captured that great low-light imagery. Downsampling to 1080p brought back the sharpness and gave a clean final result.

Trans-Flo is a facility where bulk commodities are transferred from railcars to trucks. If you look at the video around the Trans-Flo yard, you can see the apparatus used to offload liquid commodities. The railcars are swapped out several times a week.

6454 runs over here in Clearwater by my house. Very seldom now compared to a few years ago. Can you give me a good train spot location downtown tampa?

The corner of Franklin and Polk seems to be a popular spot as it's relatively quiet but has a good view both ways for the Polk St run. If you do it right you can also get a shot with Y295 and the iconic Tampa Theater. Another good spot is the corner of Ashley and Polk when the train is heading West in the evening, as you can see the entire run, catch the train on the curve, then swing around and get the rear of the train going over the century-old steel truss cantilever Cass St bridge.
