      I stole that idea from an episode of Upright Citizens Brigade. in the sketch, the astronaut was under attack from a space monster. The lines were originally:
      Astronaut: S. C. 2000! What's an S.C. 2000?
      Groud control: It's a space coffin... two-thousand.

    Watching this review first. I'll be keeping a keen eye out to see if any other reviewers pick up the upside down 8. Thank you Lauren for always being thorough and picking up details that everyone else misses. This is why I enjoy this channel.
    That cardboard heat separator is also simple but effective way of testing how the hot air from the GPU affects the CPU. However the results might be even worse to be completely honest if we are working with a traditional blower cooler that dumps hot air all over the case waiting to be sucked in by that CPU cooler. Having it set up this way might even be a better configuration for Lotus since you can be quite certain a good portion of the hot air would actually just go straight out the top from the GPU. It'll be interesting to see this compare the FE to a third party maker with those traditional blower cooler in a identical setup.

    I'm gaming in QHD, your channel is about 4K ... I guess I won't watch your channel much, at least not until I decide for 4K. But I must admit you're doing a great job in reviewing, when I saw a friend of mine link your video, my expectations were, "oh, a channel for simps". And while it wouldn't be completely wrong to assume that from the thumbnails and I'd bet on simps being targetted quite a bit, it is far from being the complete truth. The reviews are legit. And especially useful for 4K gamers, including some advices on the game settings in tested games.

    Best RTX 3080 review of several I've seen!
    Including graphs showing percentage increases: check; Using a system with vertical airflow: check; Considering CPU temperature: check; Experimenting with shielding the CPU cooler from sucking in the hot air: check. Measuring total system power draw (not the much less interesting card-only power draw): check. Awesome work, Lauren!

    how much performance does it have without going over 60-70Db? just 1080p-1440p?

  • @jandzoe9249
    @jandzoe9249 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for this video. This is so helpful. I just copied your Noctua windtunnel build because it was so cool. At the moment I have an Palit GTX 1080 JetStream in it, which kind of blocks the airflow from the bottom a bit so I am looking forward to the RTX 3080 which is also a bit lower and will block less air from the bottom. I was also thinking about the 3070 but since it is shorter than the 3080 my fear would be that it's fan would be directly under the CPU which would be a disaster :)
    I had to smile when I read the "dual chamber" idea because I was thinking exactly the same. There should be 2 airflow chambers for CPU and GPU as they are the main heat producers. So both could get fresh air.
    Keep up the good videos especially with this build. Really love it.

    I like how you don't forget the science to improve the lifespan of a Gaming PC. The average lifespan of a computer is 3 years. I have Gaming PC builds that are 8 years old and still working perfectly today. Some came back for video card and memory upgrades. But some just had me build them a new Gaming rig because the newer tech parts are faster and the old motherboards do not support the new tech. I sometimes can just use their old case over again.

    Isn't 4k a bit overkill nowadays? I cannot be satisfied with only 60fps, I'm really curious what the difference is at 1080p

    • @TastyPC
      @TastyPC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I upgraded to 4K 6 years ago, so I don't think it's overkill in 2020, but I realise that people have either chosen the high refresh rate route or the high resolution route. It's hard for people to understand why the other side went the way it did. For me, I don't play games competitively, I play games like a tourist, so visuals are extremely important.

    Thanks for this helpful review; it's the first one I've seen that discusses GPU/CPU cooler air flow interaction, and because I'm attempting my first PC build, it interests me a lot. Your idea for an air flow deflector has certainly given me food for thought. Although I don't play games at 4K, where you show the upgrade to the 3080 to be most effective, I do use VR and games like Derail Valley are starting to push the limit of my OG Vive + GTX 1080, so I have no hope of running FS2020! As I'm about to upgrade to the HP Reverb G2 (which has a similar GPU demand as 4K) I think the RTX 3080 will be a good fit. I'm in the queue at OCUK, where one of the Forum members has devised a useful tool for predicting your place in the queue. I think my 3080 will be delivered in December, at the current rate!

    Apples to apples would have been testing the 2080 card against the 3080 card since there is no Ti or Super versions yet... Would be even cooler to see 1080, 2080 vs 3080 to help those in the sweet spot of the GPU update cycle know how much winning there is.

    • @TastyPC
      @TastyPC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The way I see it, there's 2 apples to apples comparisons to be made.
      ~ Flagship vs Flagship (ignoring confusingly branded "titan-class" products)
      Here you learn how the best of one generation compares to the best of the other.
      ~ Price point vs Price point
      So what does £600-£700 get you this generation compared to the previous one.
      So ideally I would have compared it to the 2080Ti and the original 2080 (even though it was still a higher priced card than the 3080 is) to attempt to cover both but I didn't have a 2080 sample to test. I have a 2060, 2060 Super, 2070 Super and 2x 2080Ti's. So I did what I could.

      @@TastyPC Dammit! And here I am with a 8yr old gtx660m as my primary computer 😣😣
      But I'm glad they sent you one quick enough this time though. I hope they send the 3090 too!

    Interesting results with the cardboard... Would be cool to see what a true chimney would do to thermals... Great video!

    Dayum. This is the best Airflow-Design I have ever seen on any TH-cam-Tec-Channel. For that alone, easily liked and subscribed!

    Did you end up leaving that piece of cardboard in place? Quite a clever solution that is. Would love to see what you can do with a 3D printer, I think you’d be surprised by the number of things you come up with.
    I’ll be designing and printing a bespoke fan duct for my ITX system if I manage to get my hands on one of these, hopefully directing the exhaust heat from that top fan straight out of the case.

    Nice review, this confirms that as I have had the RTX 2080Ti since launch I will skip this gen as the extra fps in some titles doesn't warrant the investment for me right now, I predominantly play at 1440p so my current setup is more than adequate (for the time being anyway).

      Yeah I think the 4080 will be a huge leap. And actually properly feed 10000 CUDA cores or whatever the 3090 has. I just hope I don't need to go for DDR5 to extract all the performance out of it.
      Hopefully just Zen 3 will do me nicely

    Possibly a stupid question but does the exhaust fan of the 3080 affect your system RAM temps at all? And does that matter?

  • @Calypso694
    @Calypso694 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Temps for third party cards are slightly cooler by like 15 percent. Overclocking naturally is slightly better, again only by a small percent. Reason is because they are using the 3 fan basic cooler design like always. TechYesCity and Optimum Tech have some third party comparison already because they didn’t get their hands on founders cards (for whatever reason)

    thanks ! thanks for the test with the cpu fan !

    I just realized the RTX 3080 is printed upside down so when it's mounted traditionally (the way the cooler design clearly intends), you can read it when looking into the case.

    If the air is coming from the front of the case it might not be an issue. But some of that heat will be going through the CPU cooler.
    I like your idea of maybe making a divider between the video card and the CPU so nun of the heat gets to the CPU at all. The top fan can cool the CPU and the bottom fan cools the GPU. Someone should just make a A/C cooler for computers.

    I honestly think this is one of the best, if not the best review out there of the 3080. It is direct and easy, focused on the airflow of the case and the gpu itself, and the graphs are simple and direct that just by glancing at them you know exactly what you're looking at, unlike most where you have to pause and take a second to analyse. Proper good job.
