Just to point out from a 76 year old retired mechanic , It's not all ABOUT JUST turning the check enging light off. It's scanning the CODES, FINDING. AND FIXING THE PROBLEM that exists (which may not be current it might be in history). Then when you are satisfied that the problem is fixed you can turn the light off with the scanner.
Yes totally agree. These modern scanners will get you started to fix the problem. However one thing that gets me is garages just replace whole parts nowadays without going deeper into the issues. Get a misfire they chuck the coil pack without even removing the spark plug to check the gap.

Now that I'm in my right mind Fred. I change my own oil on my 2012 TDI Artic Jetta, and change fuel filter. I'm going with transmission fluid for life of car philosophy. computerized cars make us uncomfortable. Cheers! 🍺
My 2008 TDI Seat ran for 15 years without an engine issue and i changed the oil every year even though i was only doing 2500 miles a year. Volvo say tranny fluid for life but i did not buy that and changed mine at 55k miles. It was very dark and burnt. Yes modern cars will be scrapped due to computer issues long before the mechanics wear out.
@@CB-RADIO-UK hey radio. In US we're trained more recently 5,000 miles with synthetic for oil change. Anyway, I'd do the transmission fluid myself but you need a computer. Don't call the VW dealership, were you bought it, they'll take your lunch! ha They suggested 40k for transmission, but I blew it off. cheers guy.

Just because a car does not have any lights on does not mean it has no codes!
You are better off with a cheap generic USB obd or Bluetooth obd tool with brand specific software on a laptop, these scan tools are very limited in what they can do, most brands have decent free software for them, forscan for ford and Mazda can do programming and will change options in the car, do service procedure's like brake pump for bleeding and even reprogramming of the immobiliser system even if you have no keys at all, all done on a elm327 obd tool costing £3 from China for £5 from eBay.
Simplistic question. Will that tool help make the car last longer?
Depends on what is failing. If you ignore a EML light its a risk which could total the car when something fails. . Bit like not changing a cambelt and water pump.
@@CB-RADIO-UK VW 2012 Jetta's, TDI have emission problems. They have their Tubro Intercooler problems freezing in severe cold weather. Plug the front like a pickup. My check engine light is always on. It keeps working. IDK Fred.

Engine control module. Monitors things like fuel delivery in the injection system and ignition timing.
Whats ECU number
Engine Control Unit. Your cars brain.
