Unfortunately, we've created a system in this country where the USPS depends on the bulk/presorted (junk) mail industry for its financial existence. Junk mailers get massive discounts on what it costs to mail an item, and this income translates into a serious portion of the USPS budget every year. Is USPS charges them more, there will be less junk mail to a point, then at some price the junk mailers will stop using USPS and the post office will have even less money than they already do. We've created a catch-22 that we can't escape from until we decide to fund the postal service differently

Changing the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2016 could help. It requires USPS to pay for retirement benefits of all of its employees for at least 50yrs. This forces USPS to accept more junk mail to pay for those benefits.

It's just another case where anything that _could_ be harnessed for profit (your attention) _was_ harnessed for profit. The advertising companies realised that this was a way to make money (albeit dirty money), and so they decided to exploit it.

For digital things, it is simple enough. Use email aliases for each website :)
Could get burner numbers for mobile. For the US it could be a bit more difficult.
You can get burner credit card numbers as well.
For physical mail, there is no option to obscure it. Maybe a P.O. box in the post office. Would be nice if there would service to obfuscate address by using a data matrix code instead.
Another option is to shame and not use compasses who print and distribute junk. And put a sticker ej.uz/noAds on the mailbox to avoid junk mail :)

The Netherlands has these systems and rules in place:
    - Regular mail: opt out of junk mail without an address using a sticker on the mailbox. Opt out of addressed spam mail by signing up to 'Postfilter'.
    - E-mail: the sender must have proof you've signed up for their mail AND supply a link in every e-mail they send where you can immediately unsubscribe.
    - Phone calls: you can sign up to a 'do not call'-registry where you can pick what kind of companies (i.e. monetary, goods, charities) may contact you.
In all cases, if companies do not comply with these rules, they can be (and have been) fined.
I think the difference boils down to how the US values its companies over its people.

Out of control, unregulated capitalism where companies are valued more than people supported by an extremely weak government in all matters concerning regulation leads to this. The most saddening aspect of all is that Americans are brought up to believe that this model ensures freedom and that any kind of regulation by the government steals that freedom...

So here is the legal situation in Germany:
Junk mail without your address on it (Postwurfsendungen) is allowed but you can put a "No Advertising" sticker on your mail box which is respected by all mail carriers and works really well in practice. Junk mail with your address on it is legal as well, but you are able to opt out on it on a per vendor basis. There is also the so called "Robinsonliste" which is a list of people which don't want to receive any mail advertising which you can join. Targeted junk mail is actually not an issue here, I might get one or two junk letters per month and I'm not on the Robinsonliste.
Advertising by phone (cold calling) is prohibited unless you explicitly opted in beforehand. There is even a law against it (§7 UWG). The same about phone advertising applies to E-Mail advertising and works for corporations based in Germany but not against all the Scams and Phishing stuff from abroad.

    • @masterpuffin

      @yonieter2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Same here in the Netherlands; sticker on your mailbox and it works flawlessly. For phone advertising, there is a database where you can register your number, and the companies are not allowed to call you. That also works well.

    • @burkiwa
      @burkiwa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Similar in the Netherlands. However, the sticker on the mailbox has two options: the mail must have the correct address of this residence, OR it must have the correct NAME and address of this residence. No 'Occupant', or whatever. As well, we have the opt out on a per vendor basis.
Also something similar to 'Robinsonliste' I don't know what is called, but it works.
We only receive email ads from an organisation that we have 'a relationship' with - ordered from them or donated to them; with the ability to unsubscribe.
So, very much the same as Germany.
      I feel your pain, Johnny.

This situation continues because IT WORKS. I believe the goal is to get about 1% or something around that to potential customers. Then, if only 5% of them come to your shop just because they saw one thing in your brochure, they might as well buy some butter, that's on a great promotion today, or some toilet wipes, get 3 packs, to save 50% off, and so on... The only reason this is still a thing is because it works, and the cost of printing milions each week drops, when the big companies order them in big bulk and signing a long term contract can make costs even lower. They only want you in, then they got you.

The addressed one are sometimes still a problem... but (yes we have a but) i got rid of them by collecting them for some time and put retour on it. Scribbled out that porto cost was payed and send it retour.
The postal work has double service and they fine the addressed person for the costs that was not added. Those companies need the postoffice to send their junk so will probably pay the fine but get your address out of the system. Or they won't pay and the postal office will come to a conclusion it is extra work for nothing. Had 17 of those addressed junkmail, after just 3 months only 2 to get rid of eventually called those two to say the addressed person had moved out of the system, problem solved.
But our country is luckily still a little bit more 'protective' over their people. Although some older generations live still in a American Dream and think that less control and all markets should be open instead of regulation, there are younger generations of Gen X and Y grown up with the internet and also the crisis of 2008 in mind who are more aware of the downsides.

I know this cause I use to own an advertising agency. When a customer wanted to increase its sales, I would call my specialist Telephone Sales company. This company buys hundreds of phone numbers from the people that own the machines that check active phone numbers. Then they would randomly call people and try to sell my customer's crap to them.

So when they get a call about it, they push the shit downhill to the people who deliver it and they track down the person and ream them.
Edit: It also depends on the definition of junk mail, aus post wont deliver anything that isn't addressed to the person, if you put an address+stamp on junk mail and post it it will still get through.
Re edit: as a btw often in places with PO boxes like further in the country, the small corner store that hosts the boxes are sometimes contracted to woolies etc to put flyers in and you have to talk to the corner store themselves to have it stopped.

So if I go away for a week or two, my mailbox will have maybe two pieces of junk mail. Hi Johnny, here's the situation for Germany:
    1. You can stop all advertising by simple putting a "no advertising" sticker on your mailbox. The postal delivery worker has to respect it by law.
    2. In addition, you can also stop "personalized advertising" (which has your name on it and might therefore not be recognized by the delivery worker as such) by registering with an organization called "Deutschen Dialogmarketing-Verband" (German Dialogue-Marketing Organization). If you are on their list, companies are not allowed to mail you advertisements. This is strictly enforced.
    3. Robo-Calls are generally illegal afaik.
--> Result: I receive about 1 (?) unwanted call per year and only advertising mail I have explicitly signed up for.

Problem is that the change of address form asks for your full name in order to use it. And brokers buying it from social media companies instead have what looks like a full name or even your real name depending on how your account was set up. Most junk mail in the US is mail addressed to you, with only the occasional mail piece having "current resident" in the name slot. As a result, fixing this system would require significant changes that the government just isn't interested in doing.

“What we decide to pay attention to matters.” I agree completely. But what we decide to say matters too. I know it’s misconception that the USPS if funded by tax payer money, sadly it’s not. When the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 was passed into law, the United States Post Office Department was abolished. And a new quasi-corporate structure was created - the USPS we know now. With this new law came a new revenue mandate, that the USPS would not receive tax payer money and instead they would collect revenue through things like stamps and deliveries. The Postal Reorganization Act and the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 are the two reasons for slow mail delivery, long lines, and junk mail.
The USPS is a wonderful social service. It provides communication, prescriptions, financial aid, equitably throughout the country. Unfortunately, this is a problematic time to be taking an attack on the USPS with the mail-in ballots being in the news. I’ve been watching and enjoying your videos for a while now and would be proud of you if you decided to create a clarifying video.

After it became a private company they basically now rely on junk mail to make the majority of their income and they take it very seriously when it comes to delivering it and we had to make sure EVERY house got one of each of the week’s junk leaflets. The only way to prevent it is calling the local delivery office and opting out, and although it’s fairly easy to do it’s not very well publicised so we’d have a list of only maybe 5 houses per 600-house route who had bothered to do so. Even if someone has a notice on their letterbox saying ‘no junk mail’ we were still technically supposed to deliver it unless they’d officially opted out. I hated having to do it

Here is some insight from a Postman in Germany.
The average German Postbox receives 36kg of ads every year.
There are three kinds of printed advertisement.
The bulk, the ones which you opted for and unwanted Addressed ads.
A "No Adds" sticker will save you from the first although many third party vendors ignore it anyway.
Ads with your Name and Address is mostly Catalogs from online shops, flyers from Banks, insurances, enclosed letters with more ads etc. These are officially from some website or institute that people used and consented in the use of their data. (unaware)
The third category is the tricky bit. An entire industry has access to your data, and they get good deals in printing and delivering their ads, especially in low months.
All the above plus packages pay the Postman's salary. (not the ordinary letters.)
Sometimes the volume is so high, that the Postman has to call it a day and delay important letters for the next day.
And lets not forget about the ecological footprint of the gig.
We are talking about thousands of Tons of garbage, both paper and the plastics enclosures, plus the energy wasted to manufacture. Heartbreaking.
Funny Fact: Grandmas get catalogs from EVERY online shop/telemarketing there is!
Thank you John for this vid.

Also in recent years (at least in my experience, it could've been going for longer) a lot of advertising mail purposely make the envelope look like it's an a official document or writing things like "important/confidential/urgent information/statement" to trick or scare people to open it thinking it could be from a legal company or a bank and in the end is just "hey switch to our insurance" or "you're approved for a care membership", because most people just throw it otherwise, but this way it increases the chance of people actually open it and see what it is.

They forwarded every piece of junk mail with some new ones for company that has the potential to “help me move”. Except my diploma. It got delivered to the old address. I had to order a replacement. Last year, I actually stood by the USPS in their struggle to expand funding from the federal government. But after watching this video and what happened with me, I would rather it being privatized.

I was gonna write a long sarcastic reply to this, but my heart wasn’t in it to be mean. So here is what I honestly have to say:
It’s not easy, nor is it cheap to move to a new nation and be able to keep doing the same job that you currently do. For some, yes it is achievable, but for many others, doing such a thing is risking your entire livelihood on it. If your house has a leaky pipe that is dripping water on the floor, thus causing problems, you should fix the leak instead of moving into a new house in the other neighborhood.
We should stop running from these problems and find solutions to fix or eliminate them. Running away from the issue is not getting rid of it,
