I and my boyfriend Don Massey in 1977-78, operated Mexican and American Food Restaurant inside the famous Topanga Corral owned at the time by Sydney Fish and his son in law Sandy Freeman. I remember Bear (Bob Hite) and rest of the Canned Heat Band members (minus Blind Al Wilson). They were regular house band that played usually every other weekend, sometimes more if needed for entertainment. I also baked home style pies, which Bear so much loved the organic orange custard pies that he'd have me bake one just for him and he'd take home to eat. He'd tease my boyfriend about wanting to steal me to take home just so I could be there to make pies for him. He was a very happy jolly kind hearted and talented friend to me and so many others. He is sadly missed by all that knew him. The LA Blues Band was another band that came in once in awhile,Tim McIntire was lead singer and also missed from his passing from heart attack. He was extremely talented musician and nice caring person. So many other musical groups played and many discovered by talent scouts to become known like a band came in called Get The Knack, playing song My Shirona that got them fame and their named shortened to The Knack. Terry William's Band was good too. Gary Busey played a weekend promoting a movie The Buddy Holly Story which he played role of Buddy Holly. Patty Davis was a fairly regular patron, she'd come get me from kitchen to dance to On The Road Again Canned Heat song, at the time I wasn't aware that Ronald Reagan then California Governor was her Dad. Neil Young came in quite often as a patron mainly when Canned Heat played. I'm sure that I probably prepared munchies for him. I have many fond memories of the Topanga Corral.

Wow, just stumbled across this vid. Bob Hite managed my dad's record store before getting signed to record label. I was 16 and I would go up to Topanga and hang out with Bob. He would play old blues records for hours and play me all the great's from Muddy Water's to John Lee Hooker. Bob Had the largest blues collection of records wall to wall ceiling to floor that blue my mind. Those were the Daze.
I understand he met Al Wilson at that record shop.
Ahhhh Topanga. I commuted through it off and on for 25 years. Could almost do it blindfolded!!!

I love canned heat. My parents played a lot of it while I was growing up. I had no idea that he died at the age of 27 just weeks before Jimmie Hendrix and Janice, wow. Great but sad story. Love Neil young and the doors too. Great vlog. Jah is so cute, love that pup
Blind Owl's death was due to barbiturates. A common side effect was people would forget that they took them and would take more. He frequently slept up the hill in the back of the house in a sleeping bag. He loved nature, and that's where he was found. The original Bob Hite house was washed away in the floods of 73, and the current house was built in 1990. Rest well Bob and Alan. Your music shaped my listening taste from a very young age. Thank you.
I recall seeing Canned Heat in a small venue many years ago. Alot of seconal being passed out in the crowd and apparently the band had taken a few bc they kept falling down on stage

that is hilarious, even tho I shouldn't laff. when Hite collapsed at the Palomino, they didn't try getting him up, because he so often collapsed.
but that was the end for him. there's a story around that junk was in the vial that a fan gave him. but speed was alive and well at the time. meth is nothing new.

Topanga Canyon was always a trip! Although I grew up and lived at the very north end (in Chatsworth), I used to drive through the canyon frequently on the way to the beach, and daily to commute to school in the mid 80’s. It’s a pretty timeless place!
1960s Rock n Roll Topanga Canyon Style was cool. After viewing the vlog, I listened to the boyish, bluesy voice of Alan Wilson singing “On the Road Again.” Your vlogs have introduced me to many artists. I’m glad Canned Heat was on your list to vlog. 🦁

Many years ago I was on the boardwalk in Atlantic City with my parents while Canned Heat was giving a free concert at the Steel Pier we stopped and listened for a few songs as my dad was a fan so officially my first concert was Canned Heat at age 6
Had heard so much about Topanga canyon, had no idea what it looked like, its really rustic. Thanks for taking us there. Jah and his fan club, he sure cleans up..lol Give him a hug from all of us.

My old mate "dicky" Dave saw Canned Heat and Hendrix at the Isle of White festival in the Early 70's Hendrix's last performance. Dave played a mean blues harp too.

Having grown up in Southern California from 1965 to 1987 I can't tell you what a cool trip your vlogs are for me. Folks these creepy places are all over So Cal. We used to go to a place in hills of Orange County where a guy supposedly crashed his car and then was hit after he crawled out in the road. Fun, spooky and all too often sad tales............but the weather is nice!
Great vlog, strange what happened to those houses built on that land. Topanga Canyon looks beautiful when you did the view shot and loved that frog at Frogies. Such a shame someone else with talent died so young. Well done again Jordan.

We were fortunate to drive thru Topanga Canyon every time I had a Drs appt. After a few years the drive got too hectic and trafficked due to having to drive thru the canyon from Burbank to Beverly Hills then having to wait about an hour to see my eye specialist then fight traffic back thru the canyon to get home. But the scenery and history behind Topanga Canyon made the trip worthwhile for a few years then finally I found another eye specialist who was closer to home and more punctual with his patients as well as more caring fortunately for us. Thanks for the tour of this old rock and roll era that now is legendary and soon not forgotten. Rock on ❣️🙏🏻🌈🐕🦺

I live in Topanga, but i was entirely unaware of the fact that the abandoned house was where Alan Wilson died. Also, the “cool house” is right down the street from me, haha. Thank you for making this video!

This brings back memories of Marin county San Francisco sound of late 60s and early 70s. Towns of mill valley, Stinson beach, fairfax and Sausalito, Jefferson airplane, Crosby Stiles and Nash, Blood sweat and tears, and occasional sitings of Janis Joplin.
back in 68-or 69 was a young kid hanging around a burger joint in petaluma called The square balloon where my older brother worked. A van pulled up with a with a bunch of hippies that kinda scared me as they rolled out so i took off on my bicycle. My brother later told me that was a group called the grateful dead. I was unimpressed lol, i didn't care much for hippies. My dad would drive us into the city and my brother and i would laugh and point at them.

He moved there after Canned Heat's Laurel Canyon home located on Lookout Mt. Dr., by Joni M., and Graham N., burned to the ground like countless others in L. Canyon.
Died at 27, no autopsy performed. Just over 10yrs later Bear dies at 36, after mentioning in an interview that they used to party with members of the Manson's.

Canned Head were a great band... Blind Owl had a unique style all his own and certainly deserves more acknowledgement and respect besides another member of the 27 Club.
He sang Canned Heat BIGGEST HITS (2) GOING UP THE COUNTRIE- ON THE ROAD AGAIN. ALWAYS ENVISIONED THE BEAR SINGING THOSE SONGS FOR SOME REASON. I WOULD THINK TO MYSELF- " FOR SUCH A BIG GUY HE SURE CAN SING IN A HIGH PITCHED VOICE WHEN HE WANTS TO" OFCOURSE LATER ON I SAW THAT IT WASN'T THE BEAR WHO SANG THOSE GREAT 2 SONGS, BUT ALAN WILSON !!! I MUST ADMIT I WAS A LITTLE SURPRISED, BUT A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED ALSO! I FIGURED IT WAS THE BEAR, THE FRONT MAN OF CANNED HEAT THOSE 2 BIG HITS!! SAME THING WITH THE HOUSE IN TOPANGA CYN

The first house was swept away by a flood,he would take barbs to help him sleep,he was forgetful and unorganized,plus he had attempted to kill himself by driving his car off a cliff. I think he just took to many to sleep.

It's a little sad reading these comments that most people think the only fame Goin Up The Country got is from a Geico commercial! That was probably their most famous song and has been used in countless films and soundtracks about the sixties. It's one of the most iconic songs of that time.They were a great band.

I dont know if you have ever heard of an old cultic kind of commune called zendik Farm? I can't remember if they actually had a little location in Topanga Canyon or not but they had some literature and a cheap novel by one of their followers that refered to Topanga canyon a lot and it was weird stuff. they eventually moved to San Diego County then I think to Texas where their leader died

I used to hang with 🐻 of CH at TC as well as Billy Grey they were my body guards of sorts~the corral was my hang out in the early 70z. Still hope someone finds out what happened to the Warriors of the Rainbow. I dated the bass player Richard Tepp.
The laurel canyon crowd used to frequent as well lots of well knowns like CSN &Y Peter Fonda etc always wondered why there’s no book about the corral yet. Lotsa history of many groovy ppl~lol

Blackie Dammett who is the Anthony Kiedis's dad used to live at Topanga Canyon in the late 60s early 70s go read his book Lord of the sunset strips so many incredible stories because he met and was friend with bands like Led Zeppelin Doors The Who Alice Cooper Hendrix and others
Bear had a garden behind the house,he was found in his sleeping bag.

Also wanted to kniw why the owner would abandon such a beautiful property do you know Jordan why they abandon it and if they plan to rebuild. I cannot see letting that piece of land just sit there empty like that it just seems really weird, but I'm assuming that these people are loaded with bread and they probably have other places to live
