I just can't imagine being there back in the 60s/70s with the mass amount of rock stars all over the place... back when there really were rock stars!

Be sure to check out the documentary, I believe called The Canyon, produced by Jacob Dylan, that covers the music scene of the area. Lots of Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, and Mamas and The Papas content.

I ran food concessions nightly at Topanga Corral 1978 and met and prepared delicious fresh food for its patrons and many talented musicians like Neil Young, members of Canned Heat and so many others. It was exciting. I was unfortunately attacked by two men behind the building where I stayed in my motorhome that were later identified as the Hillside Stranglers. It was a very traumatic experience I survived and I left and returned to my home in Southern Oregon 1979.

Topanga canyon road is very unique place. Everytime I drive it, I always say, this place is frozen in 1969. If you read Diane Lake's book, (Manson family member) she tells you about what was happening on Topanga canyon. From the 118 freeway to Pacific Coast Highway. It was very popular with the hippies.

Jim Morrison is and will always be my favorite artist of all time. He really was a true Poet. What a beautiful place. Theres something about California and the canyons and beautiful winding roads that takes my breath away. And lots of history. Whenever I think of Topanga canyon, I can't help of think of Gary Hinman, one of the victims in the Manson murders. He lived in Topanga Canyon when Manson had sent Bobby Buesolei, Susan. Atkins and Mary Bruner to rob Hinman. And we all know how that ended unfortunately. Definitely a grim fact but history none the less.

Your talk of the road reminded me that I hitchhiked through Topanga Canyon from the valley to the coast one morning after a late party. Got a ride in the back of a van with no doors on it. He drove fast. That was kinda hairy.

The Canyon has so much history. The original Alice Cooper band lived there around 1969 when they first came to southern California and he tells a story about, how they'd see these hippies at one of the gas stations; a real big group of them. Well, it turns out it was the Manson Family they were always running across. Not sure what gas station/convenience store it would have been.

I was born in the Valley in 1956. My parents took me to the Top of Topanga. There was a burger place there. I can't remember the name but it was torn down perhaps in the late sixties. As a young guy would take dates to that lot. Just dirt then. Great view. "The Corral" is what we called the bar in Topanga. Great place to hang as almost anyone could pop in to play. There was/is a dirt road on that lot going over the hill. My friend lived in a farm house with his wife and two other families. Had a little recording studio. I played drums. It was an amazing time. I left Cally a long time ago. Still, it's nice to see the areas of my youth. Topanga Canyon has so much history that nobody knows about. Gone in the mists of time.

My best friend and I watched the movie The Doors so often while drinking 5ths of ol Jose Quervo that we were almost convinced Val Kilmer was Jim's kid😂😂😂😂 Val done all the singing in that movie I'd heard not long ago in a TH-cam video of "The tragic story of Val Kilmer". Wish I knew where to look for this, I love Roadhouse Blues and would have loved to see the land in person. That art wall isn't an OG landmark. Some yuppies moved into the canyon not that long ago (relatively speaking) and instantly put it up. Most of the locals were like, what the hell is this s#*t lol. Oh, and if someone drives up behind you in the middle of the night, just let them by. I forgot to mention that while working at Topanga Corral Nightclub, in which movie scenes were filmed here, I was an extra in bar fight scene of movie "Flatbed Annie & Sweetie Pie- Lady Truckers" that starred Kim Darby & Annie Potts (1979), but the actual filming took place summer 1978. Another film crew of "The Elvis Presley Story" used this place for certain scenes while we were there. My how time flies. I was 17 years old (Legally Emancipated Minor at 16 years of age in Oregon) and the Owners of the Topanga Corral celebrated my 18th Birthday and Canned Heat played my Birthday Song.

I live right near Topanga Canyon and I've been to The Top of Topanga. I didn't even know there were hiking trails. I just thought it was a dirt parking lot. I did take pictures of the valley down below but it was a smoggy day so the pictures didn't come out well. It was just a bunch of rooftops of houses anyway. Not very pretty at all. But, If you take Topanga all the way south, you end up at the beach.

Man!!!! I know this video is old and I’m just now commenting on it, but do you have plans to ever visit the Legendary Pompeii location that Pink Floyd played in, in 1971?

No that staircase wasn't there in 1977, 1978 or 1979. I would've noticed it since I was living back there and I'd hike up on that hill to pick Nopales from Cactus. Those trees were very small but larger now over the years of growth. I used to walk my dog along the narrow path along the creek behind where the Topanga Corral Nightclub building once stood. I knew that building quite well from my job cooking food, cleaning the entire Establishment including the bathrooms. The Dressing Room for Musical Entertainment was in the back behind the kitchen area, you had to enter through the kitchen to get there. There was two side doors on the east side, one near the food concessions window and another between kitchen and dressing room. The main entrance was located on the west side of building near the Pool Tables area and had an long sloped wooden walkway where I remember the Owner Sidney Fish would sit and greet people as they arrived. Sandy Freeman, partner Owner, was Bartender, and his wife Stephanie Freeman mainly chose whom Entertainment would be. She often listened to music tapes sent for her from music groups desiring to play there, many times Talent Scouts would be present in the audience. I remember occassionally Neil Young would be sitting at the bar quietly while listening to the live music.
