    Thank you for all that you are doing on your channel. As an elderly disabled person, there are basically no jobs I qualify for. I haven't opened a store yet because I am trying to get at least 100 images ready to go, but you have given me enough ideas to keep my business going, basically, forever. This is going to be life changing for me. Perhaps best of all, pretty much anyone can do this as imagination, thoughtful research and a small amount of training in a decent photo editing software are all it takes. As in my case, barely being able to use to my legs and being 3/4 blind are not a major hindrance to owning a business, so almost anyone can do this. Thanks again and keep up the GREAT work!

    I have been in POD business like 2 months and watched maybe hundreds of videos about it. Surely there were some really helpful videos but you are the number one by far in that area. Surely Pareto principle plays its role here.
    Thanks for your content.

    I love wikimedia! So surprising the things I found are public domain! I was always looking when I previously made physical prints, not sure why on earth I didn’t think of Pod use, though to be fair I’ve only just started dabbling!🤷‍♀️

    Great ideas! But rawpixel says Apollo astronauts image is for Editorial Use only even though it's in public domain.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes if an image shows an astronaut's face, then generally it is for editorial use only (because they are a private citizen and not a politician). Most of the pics with astronauts are public domain and you can do whatever you want with them (including the Apollo 11 picture in the video) - thank you for bringing that up, I didn't mention that specifically in the vid.

    Thank you for this video. I am new to POD. Just started in the last 30 days. You answered some questions that I have been contemplating. I have another one: How are people using The Mandalorian images and font on T-Shirts for Father's Day? The Dadalorian is all over POD sites. I messaged several people how they received permission, and none of them answered my question.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is a great question. There are a few answers as to why this is happening. 1. Disney does not aggressively pursue people on Etsy (which is bizarre because they aggressively pursue all sorts of other platforms). So until Disney complains, the platform won’t care. 2. Sometimes people sneaak designs onto platforms by not using very many keywords (so they might use “Father’s Day”) but they don’t actively tag it Mandalorian or Star Wars. 3. Some designers think that legally these designs are legitimate because they are parody. This is a grey issue (Disney would have to file a strike, the artist would counterstrike with fair use/parody, and there would be a potential legal dispute).

      @@zenwatercooler Thank you for the information. I am so new to the POD platform. I was wondering how that worked. I thought the idea was cute, but, then, I thought that these people are stealing others' artwork. I wanted to order a shirt for my son, who is a huge SW fan, but I couldn't ethically purchase. Thank you for your channels.

    Is it legal to sell Open Access images?
    Some art galleries and art museums publish it publicly.
    is it okay if we sell the public images we downloaded here on etsy?
    do you mind if I download a public domain painting from the national gallery of art and sell it on etsy?

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if the image is public domain, then by definition there are no copyright restrictions on it. You do literally anything with it - make a print, a design for a shirt, sell it digitally - you can use it however you wish.

    Excellent video, very informative. I actually have two artistic representations of Rossie the riveter and American gothic, created with my own characters. However, the last thing i knew was the Westinghouse owned the copyrights. I did check on Wikipedia but it didn't say anything about it, at least where i looked for. And AG i found out that a museum owns the rights. Would you mind to help me out on this? Where did you find that information. Thank you.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That has not been my experience - every image of Rosie is public domain (that I’ve ever seen). Where are you seeing trademarked info?

    • @JORGINHODONASCIMENTO
      @JORGINHODONASCIMENTO 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zenwatercooler thanks for a prompt response. I checked on Wikipedia and it doesn't say it's not on the public domain but mentions this contractor. American Gothic is property of the museum of Chicago and although it doesn't specify anything regarding copyright, they advertise themselves as the owner of the artwork.

      So "Public Domain" means cero copyright trademarks problem in any POD website?

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well yes and no. If you upload the exact same public domain picture as me, it’s possible that one of us could issue a copyright strike against the other. Redbubble would just look at who uploaded it first. However, no one can make a successful trademark claim against you because public domain designs are not trademarked.

    When I looked on Wikimedia, the Las Vegas sign is free with attribution, though. How do I do that?
    Also, regarding Frankenstein image: the *word* "Frankenstein" is trademarked so I'm confused as to how to use/alter that image and *not* use the word "Frankenstein." Obviously, tons of people do searches for items using trademarked words, but we can't use them on our image, title, or description. The frustrating thing is to see so many items with this image using "Frankenstein" in the title or description. Can you enlighten me on this? TIA.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Las Vegas: each individual picture could have different CC0 - but the actual sign is public domain. Go to Piaxabay for example and you can use those.
      Frankenstein: I am not aware of the word Frankenstein being trademarked for apparel. There are 18,000 Frankenstein results on Redbubble. If you really don’t want to use the phrase, then go with Monster, Boris Karloff, etc.

      @@zenwatercooler Thank you! I guess I wasn't using TESS correctly or didn't understand that a trademark is for specific uses, duh. "Frankenstein" is trademarked for an energy drink, i think. • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If the photo is an official government photo, then yes. If the photo is taken by a news magazine or associated press, then no. I would stick to Wikimedia or actual U.S. government websites - those belong to everyone (public domain) 🍺

      The Mona Lisa was created in the early 1500s, so the copyright has long since expired (in fact it was created before copyright existed!)

    Thanks, Zen. Ditto everybody's praise. Based upon all of the "public domain" advice you've handed out in all of your videos, I decided to incorporate this David Bowie public domain image (pixabay.com/vectors/bowie-david-star-musician-singer-1152551/) in one of my Redbubble designs. Despite all your assurances, I'm still concerned. According to Trademarkia, the "David Bowie" trademark for artwork is still live. Even if I know the image is in the public domain, what if the Redbubble police don't bother to look all over the internet to figure this out - they just check Trademarkia? Do you think there's a chance that could happen? I wish there were a way I could add a comment just for Redbubble to each of my designs - in this case, of course, I'd include the information about this image, including this link. There isn't a way to do this, though, is there? Not on Teepublic, either... Looking forward to your answer... and your next video.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm that is bizarre - I was not aware of these specific pictures - I agree with you, David Bowie’s name and image are trademarked. I am not sure why Pixabay would allow these images on their site. There are 4,000 David Bowie keyword designs on RB but I would not recommend pursuing this avenue personally. Disappointing of Pixabay to have those designs on their site.
