Matt seems like a really lovely and genuine guy! You can see why he gets so many people to cooperate with him. And then his talent shines through with the photos! Great interview as always, Josh 👏🏼
Fantastic video Josh. Matt looks like a great guy. I am from Birmingham and I laughed at the West Brom story. 😂. Your channel deserves far more recognition. ❤❤❤❤❤
Inspiring conversation with Matt. I took some of my first portrait images last weekend and most, although digital, ended up as black & white. Will be back for more. Thank you
l love the look of Rolleiflex images, first coming across them in Shinja Arimoto's amazing book Tokyo Circulation. It's one of those cameras that I love the idea of using. Matt's work is beautiful and really portrays people in a very respectful way.
I wish there was a way of double liking this… Because I’m watching it again. What a cool guy and lovely work. Thanks for creating this video both of you 🙏🏼
Dickens loved to walk the streets, meeting and observing people. He caught their character in his fictionalized descriptions. Good on u Matt for capturing character so well. your personality, sales experience, and psychology study must inform all this. Martin Parr Black Country Stories for all those who loved your West Brom convo. Up the Baggies and great podcast Josh and Matt!
Great interview. Never came across Matt's work till seeing this video and very glad I did. I also shoot street portraits of strangers with a Rolleiflex and so everything he said resonates with me (although my photos aren't close to being as good as Matt's). It is often an easy way in to start a conversation with people and then on top of that, you need to have a good vibe as said in the video.
Thank you for this interview. Funny thought. Matt probably was using the camera from his laptop. It is similar to the angle Matt uses with his rolleiflex. He has given himself the hero angle. Street portraits aren’t something I typically do. I take candid portraits all the time. I just take the shot. I want the candid look. I also have asked permission to take their picture. 7/8 times they turn me down. I’m not good at sales. I’m not outgoing. I’m not flirty. People don’t engage with me. Then there is the problem, for me, of posing the subject. I’m not good at this. When the local camera store has an event where there is a model I don’t feel comfortable doing that. Yep, this has ended up being a double watch. Really interesting interview. P.S. I think asking for a portrait is easier if you've got a good beard like Matt!

I really liked the older lady in the pale blue anorak and head scarf, but there were so many great portraits here. 😍
