I loved the BTCC as a kid during this era (I was a Rydell/Volvo fan) but the last full season I watched was 2001. To me it wasn't the same without the manufacturers and star drivers. I've dipped in and out since but just can't bring myself to watch a whole season anymore.
Can i recommend some GT4 racing? Especially the gt4 european series. It may not have the star power driver wise, but it does have lots of manufacturer support, the racing is quite good, and occasionally you'll get the elbows-out bumping and grinding action. I started following last year because Toyota started getting involved with the supra gt4.
The BTCC is my all time favourite racing series.. Was first introduced to it when it when it was a support race for the 1996 British Grand Prix.. Would beg me dad to take me to the Brands Rounds.. Still remember the huge crash that happened in front of us at the finale that year. I lost interest for a few years but got back into it around 2007 where In 2008 I decided to do every single round, was a great time and made great friends thanks to it. So yeah BTCC is a big part of my life.
I'm a little bit older than you, Aidan & I 100% appreciate your work here. The era of absolute insane racing, fantastic commentary & drivers who were both mental & brilliant at the same time. You never got this watching the Kev's down Maccies car park 😬
Admittedly, I grew up watching the BTC era live. They're rightly derided, but I have a lot of nostalgia for that 01-04 era - but got my education on Super Touring thanks to the Duke season reviews on a hand me down VHS player. I always loved Cleland and Thompson, because the first one I watched was 1995 - and my Dad had that same model of Cavalier. I still hold Super Touring as my favourite period in Motorsport ever - it had absolutely everything you wanted from an exciting series, and is the pinnacle of BTCC - and unlike most "golden eras" it still holds up beyond the nostalgia goggles, the racing was immense. I still adore the BTCC to this day - the grid is incredibly healthy, even if it's absolutely criminal Dan Cammish isn't on the 2021 grid. It remains my favourite racing series, and there's something comforting about watching a grid of 30 cars that look vaguely like the road cars banging door handles with each other. The fact it's paired with some of the best racing on TV, the Ginetta Junior Championship, also helps matters. If you've never tuned in, and you're able to watch it - I implore you to give BTCC a go. If you get past the whole "it's not F1" thing a lot of Motorsport fans have, it's some of the most exciting racing on the planet.
I'd argue that the super touring era of the BTCC was one of the best race series of all time. It just had everything, big names, big budgets but relatable cars, incredibly close racing, huge entertainment and huge crashes. I had a brief ride around a car park in Clelands red/white Vectra after a county show because my dad was working a stall opposite the Vauxhall stand. The tea making facilities had failed on the Vauxhall stand so they kindly offered the use of theirs and as a way of saying thank you I got to be a passenger in the Vectra when they drove it off the showground before loading it up on the trailer. Obviously it wasn't driven very fast and that was probably a good thing as I was kneeling on some box of gubbins where the passenger seat would be and holding onto the roll cage but still quite the experience for 12 year old me.
Say, Aidan, what is that jazz song that you use in your intro and outro? It's very catchy, and it seems like one I'd listen to unironically. So if you can, please let me know!
90’s btcc was absolutely bloody amazing, if I had to go back to any era of racing it would be this. Only thing coming close was the wrc at the time and I had this as a massive formula 1 fan
10:22 I remember going to that meeting at Oulton Park and wondering why Alfa had pulled out. My childhood brain couldn't understand what was going on at the time. Nice to get some clarity all these years later!
Awesome comments AM, thank you. Any chance you want to give GT Legends a try? The guys at Altbierbude are legends - pretty sure there are some hidden gems out there. I got fucked over at Adenau village in Germania back in '71 or thereabouts as a kid when trying to negotiate the corner at the bottom of old cobbled road, Good memories Bru. Live On!
The explanation of how the points worked in the old days makes modern day IMSA (and modern day sports car racing in general tbh) look extremely simple.
Thank you! As a "I assume" a little bit older German I remember not only spending hours playing TOCA but also how everyone smiled first concerning Super Touring cars - hey 2.0 WAOW! Looking back from todays point it was great racing AND cars could run technically in almost national series worldwide with only minor modifications, BTCC, France, Germany, Italy etc.
The oddest thing to me about the Accord Euro-R, at least the street version, is that it wasn’t sold in Europe. It was a JDM tribute to the European Accord Type R, and used the same engine at first.
@@TheA53ford lots of 90s Hondas have LSDs. Does the same thing, more or less, just on the front axle. Still helps with traction. Had I continued to build my Prelude I would have gotten one but I decided to go 2JZ and bought a Toyota Aristo with a factory LSD in it
You have just brought back so many great memories (ford fan myself, i type looking at a cheap rip off Paul Radisich Rep helmet on shelf), but i think Kieth O'dor's (RIP) Nissan was best looking car from those years.
Must admit I haven't watched btcc since the mid 00's No idea why I stopped. Also used to watch DTM around that time. I also remember playing toca game's one on my GBA and the other on the PS2. Saying this I am going to my 1st race at Snetterton this year and trying to get back into it.
Is there a link this the btcc mod for rf2 in the b roll? I just had all the dvd reviews arrived from UK for the best touring series ever 93 to 2000. Great podcast, even though I've grown up in Australia with Group c ( big bangers ) Group A ( love the GTR) and then V8 to Supercars i still prefer to watch 90s BTCC. Just love it
Aiello's Primera was top dog. My absolute favourite Supertouring car. I did not watch BTCC back then in 1998-1999 (no internet, living in not-UK), but I followed it from my local automotive tabloid. During that day, BTCC >>> F1 to me. By a long mile. Only WRC is better.
Happy days. Back in the day, I was a Mondeo man, because who wasn't? If Super Touring was bang-and-crash, today's BTCC is mere bumper cars. There are some great moments that still classifies it as British Nascars, especially with the Goodyear rubber, but my main beef is that it's on the wrong channel. ITV4?? Puh-leeaze!!
Unpopular opinion for the Nissan lads but I did like the red saloon Mondeo Neal drove in 1998 before he got his Nissan, he reportedly hated it but I liked seeing both variants duking it out
Ok so now that we are back to already-known stories to related-ish gaming footage, may someone enlighten me as to what is the actual difference between this and storytime....?
The reason why noones watching EV racing is because it’s not brand vs brand. Noones trying to gamble their life savings on a bespoke part just to sell enough cars to cover it 3 fold the next day. Also, race cars need to start using Hpattern gearboxes again. Sequentials and twin clutch are great, but there was an odd charm that came with the old Hbox
The green and gold Laguna was such a looker.
The Volvo 850 or the 3 million yard wide Audi A4 for me.
@@Bravestarr137 That Volvo 850 thicc boy was interesting for sure, it looked Fast and Slow at the same time. Hard to make another one like that.

Ahhh, what a nostalgia trip, back in the days when BTCC was a crashing series where a race might accidently happen.
Wonderful, wasn't it? 😄

Got to see the BTCC at Thruxton for both events of the 1999 and 2000 seasons.
Was great to watch the racing in 1999 with the salon cars.
Personal favorite of that era has to be the Mondeo. But most of them were absolutely amazing

Fabulous podcast Aidan
My favourite touring cars from a similar period were Craig Lowndes' #00 green-eyed monster AU Falcon and Mark Skaife's #1 VT Commodore HRT from 2000
The David Attenborough of random Motorsport trivia!
I went to Brands a couple of times during this era. My favourite being when I got Frank Beila's autograph. It was so much fun racing.
That was a great listen. Thanks for making tidying up the kitchen fun. I loved that Volvo.

love the history time, racing history podcasts
Thanks to this podcast (and the BTCC mods on Rfactor2) I've just found my new bad habit.
Things I remember from BTCC
1. "I'm going for first."
