    What I like about this generation is that they’re much more fun at slower speeds. The steering feedback and the lower limits give you much more enjoyment when you’re not doing jail time speeds. The newer generations are so much more capable but they beg you to push them harder to get the excitement out of the car.

      This 💯 I got rid of a 991.2 C2S, because although it was a gorgeous daily driver, to experience '911 fun' it needed to be going over 80mph 😬 That's ridiculous. The only place to really enjoy it was on track, and the 991.2 is a big and heavy car. Four track days was all it took to kill a set of pads AND discs. 2.5k UKP bill… Swapped it for a Caterham. Opposite end of the scale. It's fabulous fun at 40mph - and is still faster on track than the 911 😂

      @ yeah I have a 987 Boxster and a 981 Boxster Spyder and while the Spyder is 10x the car my little base 987 is, on a road with real traffic I’m actually having fun in the 987 while I’m just frustrated in the Spyder because it wants to be free.
      The Spyder is supercar light while the 987 is sports car bliss. Both have their uses and I enjoy both, but 9 times out of 10 I’m taking the 987 and only drive the Spyder on special occasions.

      As the owner of a manual 997.2 C2 as well as a manual 992.1 C2S, I fully agree with the OP. The two cars are apples to oranges. Which do I generally favor? The 997.2 as it is an analog 911 experience that is no longer available unless one goes with something from the GT department and even then there is still the tech within the car.

    People go absolutely ballistic over “on paper” and “what’s better than X” and have really forgotten about what’s fun or why we are car enthusiasts in the first place. I’m one of those elder millennials who subscribe to the Clarkson adage of “sometimes, it’s better when it was worse”. I swear I don’t see myself anywhere in the car community and that’s been depressing…
    This is an awesomely fun car that’s probably going to get slept on over the next few years.

      Some of this comes down to tires as well. They have gotten so good at making them grip....they are really over kill for many of these performance care and sap the fun out of them. If you are driving around cup 2's in the street...what are you thinking 😂. Even some high performance all seasons just have too much grip for their own good. Along with being annoying noisy as they wear. Less girp is definitely where it's at.

      Yeah I can’t think of a modern car to get excited about, they all have so much technology driving for you; weigh a tonne plus are insanely expensive, even for a decent earner you can’t justify the sums of money being asked for these machines.
      I’m a middle to older millennial also. and love cars but at some point they price themselves out of the market. 90-100k for an M3 means payments are substantially more than people’s mortgage.

    There is a reason there is a huge price delta between the PDK and the manual. The manual is MUCH more coveted, as it is with basically every Porsche model.

    Former 911SC owner and PCA Driver Ed and Autocross Instructor here who has driven countless air and water cooled 911s. The 997.2 is indeed my "peak 911" at least in terms of the ineffable balance of performance, feel, and road driving fun. You may feel the rear engine compared to what you mentioned, but coming from earlier 911s it is almost like magic the way the car feels. The RWD variant can feel a little busy when pushed hard on B roads but the 4 is rock solid while giving up precious little of that wonderful 997 steering feel. The newer 991 is faster but feels overly modernized, comparatively anesthetized, in much the same way the 993 is faster but not as much fun as the earlier SC. Like I said, ineffable, but you just find it a whole lot more fun at the same speed on the same road, yet still plenty comfortable enough to drive all day and look forward to doing it again tomorrow.

  • @nickb-

    I owned a 997 GTS with PDK for a couple of years. It comes alive when you're driving higher speeds or on windy roads, but I found it a bit boring in daily driving. As you said, the first generation PDK is quite crude and jerky in some situations, esp. places like car parks or crawling in traffic. I might have kept the GTS if it had manual transmission, but virtually no manuals were sold in Australia. I own a BMW 1M from the same year (2011) and in many respects it's a less polished and accomplished car, its engine and brakes are certainly not as good as the Porsche's . . . but my God it's fun to drive!

    I would go back and watch your reaction to your 997.1 C4S review. You were really impressed with that 997.1 C4S and that's what I have had for 15 years now. I still feel it is really exciting to drive fast or slow and gives you all the feedback you could ask for. The newer 911's are faster, bigger, quieter, and have more modern gadgets, but they are a bit boring at slow speeds. Their capabilities are so high that city driving does not allow you to really explore or enjoy them as often as the older cars. Different strokes for different folks. Some people always want the latest and greatest. I think the 997 will go down as one of Porsche's best generations.

    • @qikqbn77
      @qikqbn77 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@CesarMartinez-gl9ko it's not just the gearing with the new cars, but their higher redlines with the newer engines. Higher redlines move the peak torque curve higher as well. 997 redlines about 7000 rpm. Newer cars 7500-8000 rpm. 997 2nd gear at 7000 rpm is about 65-70 mph, top of 3rd 100 mph. 991 2nd gear at 7500 rpm is about 80 mph top of 3rd about 110 mph

      @@qikqbn77 this is my experience too. I own a 987 base Boxster and a 981 Boxster Spyder and while the Spyder feels like a baby supercar and 2 generations newer (it’s only 1 gen apart) the 987 is just more enjoyable at regular speeds. I actually prefer it most days because the Spyder demands I drive it harder to get that same energy.

    Totally agree that the "up is up, down is down" on the first gen PDK is very annoying... it's like that itch that i can never scratch... WITH THAT SAID, when you manually shift the PDK with the lever, the shifts do noticeably FEEL faster... especially when in sport plus mode. Highly encourage you to try that the next time you review a 997.2 PDK.
    First gen PDK has it's quirks, but I feel that you can alleviate a couple of those quirks if you 1 - Shift manually (no more lurching in 1st gear during Sport / Sport plus mode) and 2 - Use the lever to shift (shifts feel faster, and you don't notice the longer travel of the paddles)
    PS. i love that "kick in the butt" feeling between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd gears....
    As always though, appreciate your honest and objective reviews... Keep up the great content!

    I've got a 997.2 C4S with a 6 speed manual and I also have the Sharkwerks center muffler bypass which really ups the sound and gives about 10hp. Manual is the way to go on these 997s. Not as fast a newer Carerra S, but easy to enjoy without jeopardizing your license. Try to get the leather stitching option which elevates the interior feel. The 997.2 also has much better looking center stack and more modern PCM than the .1. Only downside of the 997.2 compared to newer ones is more NHV and interior prone to rattles.

    I went from a 718 Boxster GTS 2.5 to a 997.2 C2S. The change in handling from mid to rear engine is drastic and takes some time to get used to. It takes time to learn to trust the 997 and push hard through turns particularly ones with a decreasing radius. When you've learned the cars limits it's very enjoyable and much more relaxed than the Boxster to drive however if handling is the most important feature stay with a Boxster or Cayman.

    997.2 GTS vs 991.2 GT3 MT. I would have to pick the latter. Otherwise the 997 is a hard to beat choice compared to many other cars. Most people can’t access anything more than what this GTS can do even on track anyway, let alone on streets. This GTS does need a manual gearbox to really bring the fun factor higher.

    • @jameswillard1
      @jameswillard1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I owned an E46 M3 Cab brand new and at that time it felt very rigid and despite weighing and feeling a bit heavier than the coupe at the time I’d say most of the handling characteristics of the coupe were present. However, this past spring a friend of mine bought a very nice low mileage (36,000 ish) E46 M3 Cab and I was anxious to drive it. I’m assuming it’s just natural loosening up with metal fatigue after roughly 2 decades, but it didn’t feel nearly as solid as it when new and body twist and cowl shake was very noticeable. Just my observations, I know this probably confuses more than helps

    Excellent review. Great cars, probably top of the heap for a street focused, involving modern 911. The problem is the price. You can buy 2 Carrera S cars for one of these. Wide body and x51 power kit are nice but just not worth that much coin. You could buy a C4S, add some mods, and be close to 408 hp. Cayman is technically better handling but not as involving or fun.

  • @ryan962
    @ryan962 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The size of the 997.2 vs lets say a 991.1 certainly is a factor but don’t forget the weight savings of 350lbs (~10%) 3,400 vs 3,050lbs going to a 991 should be mentioned! Although the 991 is ‘bigger’ Porsche was still able to get a significant weight reduction over a 997.2. ESP these days newer cars are adding more and more weight, losing that nimbleness of a proper sports car!

    The brutality of the gen 1 PDK in the 997 was programmed in by Porsche for "emotion." But only in a straight line. Do a shift mid-corner and it'll be smooth. I have a used example of a c2s. Came with PS4S tires which when time came I switched to N-spec Pirellis. I have to say I much prefer the ride, grip and steering feedback from the N-spec tires. I drove a 991.2 and within just a few metres hated its electric steering.

    A big reason (for me) why this car doesn't seem like an even remotely special car, is due to Porsche doing a million different types of 911's. Four different Targa models, four different Cabriolet models, five Carrera models. This just dilutes them all down imo into a scenario where the GT3, GT2 and Turbo models are lightyears more desirable and significantly more dynamic. The only exception to this I guess would be the over priced 997 Sport Classic
