Been doing similar mods to mine. For part numbers from Weber that will make things a little cleaner looking, the ash catcher that came off the basic Smokey Joe is 65462. Bolts right up to the premium legs. The vent damper on the bottom for the regular Smokey Joe is 65461, has the right curvature for the bowl. Just use a step bit to drill the holes and paint with high heat bbq paint to prevent it from rusting. Just need to add a temp gauge on mine! Love this for quicker meals where I don’t need my full size 22” kettle.

My side vents work amazing and it’s my favorite part of this grill. Coals burn all the way through EVERY time and heat control is very precise.

Guess I'll try a little more before drilling holes I might not need to drill

I only have side vents and my coals burn down completely. I grilled ribs, steaks on it and it worked really good without the vents on the bottom

The vent on the bottom is better though. Just like the normal smokey joe, jumbo joe and full size weber grill.

I did this hack with a cheap tabletop BBQ as a test and it works a dream. I am now going to do the same with my Smokey Joe. Weber scored an own goal with the side vent design.

@@DylanKowalski123 Yep. Tried it last night on the Weber. Made such a difference. I'm going to drill larger holes to really get that burn and char.

They work just fine, cooks perfect steaks every time. Total seal eliminates FIRE hazards. Chicken quarters are bomb too.

Great video, thinking of getting a Smokey Joe. If I do buy one, I would probably spray paint the bare metal from the drill holes to prevent rust

I close my bottom damper to smother the coals. Then I can re use the coals. When restarting..
I use 6-8 new coal chunks.
So with this cycle every grilling cycle ends up using 6-8 new pieces of charcoal.
I am a novice at charcoal and am still learning.

You have saved the day. I have used the Joe twice this week as my brother has my big grill and with uk lock down I can't get it. My Joe keeps going out. Due to no air. I'm definitely doing this mod. Cheers dude

Leave the steak out to get to room temperature before grilling. Use a thin cotton towel to dry the surface before grilling, you’ll get a better char on the steak. To much moisture causes the meat to steam. Cold steak on a hot grill causes it to tense up and be tougher than if you allow it to warm up first.

Glad I found this. I have a similar one and have been only successful cooking with a lid when I prop the lid open. Then lots of air goes in from the gap and acts basically like a campfire. But looks like mods are needed. I think mine was a blue rhino (the propane company 😄) portable "tailgate" grill.

You will need to apply some high temp paint to the metal exposed after the drilling. Great idea!!

Yes, thank you. I've always thought the vents on this BBQ were a terrible design. And I used to sell them!

They still make the smokey joe with vent on the bottom. I don't get why they just don't add the premium features to the normal smokey joe.

    • @BrewReview
      @BrewReview ปีที่แล้ว

Right? Why wouldn't they just do that and just release it AS the "premium"? Heck, they wouldn't even have to do that, they could call it whatever they wanted but it would be a better design overall. I don't know why they didn't just make the regular Joe as good as they could have out the gate.

Yeap! You are darn right! Those side vents don't work well. It took me almost an hour just to cook 4 hamburger patties and didn't even get a slight grill mark. No sizzling, no searing, nothing! :s I was thinking on this precise mod. After your video, I feel more confident. Thanks buddy! ;) (be careful though with those tools :P)

Cool video, I just ordered one in Ivory so will probably be doing this mod. Your donor Weber that you got the top dampner from had a year code of EZ which means it was from 1998. I have a smokey Joe from 1988 that finally rusted through so will be using it's dampner and ash pan. Quick question, did you just use the half inch drill bit and leave it or did you ever bore a little larger?

Dylan, you scare me every time you use a power tool. But nice job. I have done some similar grill work myself. Now I'm going to Ruby Tuesday's to get a steak. Peace

    Awesome video, thanks for sharing.
I bought the SJG because that was the only one my local shop had in, and I couldn't believe how poorly it cooked. Struggled to even get little chicken skewers cooked through, much less any sear.
Will definitely be doing this sooner than later. Also planning to pick up a 32qt steamer pot for the mini WSM build

Crazy how this video probably changed the design of the smokey joe today. I got mine from my uncle who won it in a contest, and it's got a built in ash tray, just like where you put it, and a vent at the bottom, just like yours.

Tips: to much meat crammed on a small grill will smoother, flood or put out.
    2. Old charcoal seems to collect moisture.
    3. I've been using more charcoal so that if it floods coal with juices the ones underneath will reboot it.
I cooked couple weeks ago with the older walmart version it did great. Left lid on during the cooking besides flipping didn't go out. Bought another tuck and carry this weekend and it cooked just as well as the walmart Smokey.
I've had problems with both in the pass probably because I wasn't doing it right. With that said just for the heck of it. I might do a mod to pimp my Smokey in the future. I had the little square weber go anywhere also. It worked great with lots of vents and folds more portable. You can order online if you don't have a store near you. I even ordered the grill greats with it but didn't get to experiment enough with it. My bros daughter ended up with it. I might try grill grates again in the future but heck. It's good without them in my opinion.

Dylan, Excellent video and modification. You did a great job on that. I was actually wondering what the difference between the regular 10020 Smokey Joe and the 40020 Premium grills was. You know, I'm surprised that Weber put out something like the Premium when it has the venting problem. No proper bottom vent, no drip pan or ash catcher. What were they thinking? Thanks for putting this video up!
