I wish more amps were like the Mark series. B/M/T tonestack BEFORE the gain stage and 5 band EQ after. Bass low (0-3), mids 0 for a very percussive tone or full for a more boosted sounding tone, treble very high (minimum 7 or 8, directly affects the perceived gain level), classic scoop on the 5 band. Input gain around 5-7 and lead drive 7 to 10. Perfection.
YES!!! FINALLY!!! I've been following for probably a little over a year and have been hoping to one day see you demo a Mark Series amp to see how you would dial it in.
They are such strange and fairly rare amps due to their big price tags and not many people get to demo them.
I haven't watched yet but I hope you really did your research and did the classic "dialed the Mark series amp wrong" like so many people do when it comes to the EQ. I see too many people dial it like a normal amp and think "oh I guess the amp sucks and can't do metal".
Kyle, love your channel and the way you present your reviews. Very fun to watch. Now to the Mark IV. I owned one for many years bought it new from the Hollywood Mesa Store and loved it until I got a Mark V. I read the manual many times to understand what each control does. So, here it goes. The first gain knob is push pull, the next gain knob is push pull and you figured out the presence is push pull. To get the real crunch you have to run all the gain nobs at 8, both pulled out, presence pulled out around 5. The bass at 2 or lower, mids around 3, hi's around 5 to 6, than the final level to get the tone you want. once you have that than you add the eq to your taste and start with all nobs at the middle line. Than work the highs first than add bass and mids to taste. And yes, adding a tube screamer with the tone and level at 3 no gain, will really make the amp scream. Final volume to get the loudness. At the end of the day, its what you like. I can tell I have heard most of your reviews and the mesa sounds the best. Then of course, there's the back of the amp. Simleclass, pentode, mid gain engaged. That's a good place to have them. If you have any questions, comment back. I have been playing mesa for over 20 years and have read the manual over 10 times. Great demo and again, really enjoy your channel.
The 3 band EQ is your boost. Set the bass and mids at zero and turn up the trebele until you get the right amount of gain. Also keep the Prescence at a 1-5 otherwise it will get too fizzy. And try jumping the FX loop. Also use the pull functions
I keep the presence at 7-8 on mine. Any lower than that and it sounds like it’s in another room
Sounds like a shit amp if youre bypassing the effects loop and dialing all the frequencies out of it.
This is exactly it, the BMT is your input shape, the same way pickups or pedals change the shape of the input sound. Then the 5-band is your normal EQ like most amps have, but with 5 controls instead of 3.
@@aussieas6655 a tube screamer also cuts out a lot of bass and posted mids and highs, I guess any amp that needs a tube screamer is also a bad amp?
I max the mids, but yeah bass at 0-2.
I remember walking into the MB Hollywood showroom as a 15 year old kid and staring at this “hair metal” sales guy explain that spaceship amp for like 25 minutes straight then nicely saying, “I think the Recto is more my thing”… hahaha

Really fun video, Kyle! I could sit and watch you tinker with amps all day. I used to play stuff very similar to your style, but my tastes have gone to lower gain in my advanced years. Still, I really appreciate your insight and find your content highly entertaining! You've really got an ear for dialing in the tones you like, it's impressive. The riff at 50:52 sounds SO familiar, what is that???
Here's how you dial in a Mark: Don't think of the treble, middle, and bass controls like that. Think of them as "clarity, body, and fuzz" in that same order. If you want a tight modern tone, then you want the treble high and bass low, and probably the middle low as well. Now here's the other key thing about the preamp, don't be afraid to turn them all the way up or down. On my Mark V my high gain tones have always have the treble all the way up and bass all the way down, and middle at like 9 o'clock. If you can grasp that, you have learned like 80% of dialing them in. After that, it's pretty obvious. Use the graphic EQ for tone shaping. Note that no matter what style you play, you'll be taking some of the midrange out. Not a soul alive has ever heard another amp as mid-heavy as the Mark series. There is no musical style where your main tone will be from keeping them flat, go ahead and use the traditional V shape. Next, on some models the presence can be kind of harsh. The presence on Marks is lower on the frequency band than most, so it is more of an overall brightness control than a real presence control. But that's it! If you are playing most metal, just turn the treble all the way up, bass all the way down, mids somewhere below noon, use a V shape on the graphic EQ, and keep the presence around noon.
Another thing I'd say is don't use a boost until you understand the preamp, because the whole point of the preamp structure is that you can dial in a boost tone. I strongly recommend leaving a boost pedal alone because if you don't understand how to dial in the amp, adding another element to it won't help at all. It is extremely easy to approximate a TS or TC boost with the preamp controls of a Mark. Trying to dial in one of these through a boost is probably what trips up a lot of people.
I'm gonna disagree about the presence. I really love diming the presence on my Mark V (in mark IV mode) with the last treble slider pulled back down below the center a smidge. It really opens up the power amp and gives the amp more kick, grind, and aggression.
Just hearing it from the beginning. This amp sounds better than most I’ve heard on here.
The mark series is "Mid" heavy in frequencies thus why you naturally have to scoop them in the settings and then work your way through the gain/treble/ and presence to balance everything out, another variable is the low end soon the knob section you can scoop it and just use the graphic EQ because from my personal experience the bass is just as heavy as the mids do it takes some time and help from other users to get familiar with them, especially in a band mix it becomes a little more temperamental finding that balance of tone and volume overall. The mark IV obviously is a tad more user friendly than the mark 3 as far as control layout but still has that knack for making you work for killer tone

This is one amp series you really have to read/watch up on. The graphic is actually your tone control. The tone knobs are your overdrive. So you want the bass cranked on the graphic and almost off on the knob, if you want a tight bass. I just bought a Mk V and it’s unlike every other amp. It’s totally capable of tight without a boost. My suggestion is Treble on 0-1, Bass on 0-2, Mids on 5-8… EQ sliders somewhere close to a “Metal V”. That’s where you get the thump. I usually don’t completely dump the middle slider, and I have the upper mids carefully dialled. I would also turn the boost off till you are happy with the tone, and then the right boost can help.
If you like a more scooped tone, go more treble and less mids at the knobs.
That sounded sick to be honest!! I never boost my mark v because it starts getting a bit messy but I might start again after seeing this
From my understanding of the manual from a mark v, pulling out the mids and especially the bass in the 3 band eq is gonna affect input signal pre-preamp, so too much of anything is not good, and anything you pull out can be put back in with the slider eq, so pulling bass so it clears muddiness doesn't mean that you can't add them back later in the gain staging where they won't ruin other bands. It's much tighter if bass is added later, and the mids are dialed back a bit in the later eq as well. Treble is better in the input eq, then the sliders can take the shrillness out, along with the presence control
I have a Mark 5:35 and I really dig it. It's true it takes a good amount of dialing in to get the tone you want, an it's easy to make it sound like crap if you don't dial it in correctly. Would love to see you demo one of those.

Sick. I got the Mesa/Boogie DC 10 head a few months ago, I love it. It does need a boost or OD to really shred on it.
I owned a DC 10 and an OD does help for the super high gain stuff. I own a Mark 2C+ and have played a 2B, 2C, 3, 4, and 5. The Mark series (2C+ and onward) does NOT need help to get that kind of gain.
That scooped Metallica tone was damn near on point 🤘
Nice vid on the mighty Mark IV. I personally think the harshness you notice with high (8 or up) treble values is due to using a boost. Mostly use mine for super tight thrash and dont have any use for a boost pedal with all 3 gain knobs (gain, treble and drive) at 8 with only the gain knob pulled. But as always season according to taste!
Agree with this. I use mine for more modern metal and have no idea why you'd ever need a boost with it. The Mark IV is tight AF without one.

I bet this would pair well with the Duncan Blackouts. I mean the first ones that were ceramics and much more open than the emgs.
I've spent a lonnnng time messing with my MkV. What I found is that in the room, it was scratchy and boomy and I was always looking for more mids. I was also often looking for a bit more saturation?
But then once I cranked it to "recording" volume and heard it recorded, the top end and midrange balanced out and the boomyness was more of a thump.
Basically my experience is that it kinda sucks in the room, but is freaking nuts recorded.
Not a mark guy either. I did my own brief shootout at the store way back between the mk5 and multi-dual. Much preferred the rectifier.

The Key to the Marks is to understand that the EQ (Bass, Mid, Treb) is located before the actual distortion - after the first stage. So whenever you dial in bass, it dials in bass response before the distortion and therefore causes sag.
Mxr 10 band EQ should help you shape your sound / tones. It sounds good to me from what I can here on my end 👍 . Try the blackouts, DiMarzio 's , bareknuckes, motor city pickups , fishman pickups , wolfetone's , planet tone etc ..... With your amp demoes 😂

God I miss mine. None of the other mesas do this sound like this one. Sure the 2c+ is nice and the mark v is too but they skate around this one which is perfect.

If you simply cut the mids (mostly) on the EQ and don't go over board on the gain. Petrucci has a good demo on how he dials in his JPC

Don’t be afraid to push the mids on this amp. People of the tendency to cut the middle slider all the way down when they first plug into this amp and get used to hearing it hat way, then it sounds honky if they push the midd any higher. It’s also important to experiment with different speakers/cabs. Mesa intended for this amp to be used with Black Shadow speakers. To my ear my Mark V sounds better through Black Shadows than v 30s, but that comes down to taste.
Grid Slammer was the best sounds like Sepultura when the recorded Beneath the remains kinda tone!

I have this exact amp but not sure what to do with it. I own a bunch of amps in my studio but I also struggle dialing it in. So many videos with this amp sound so much better than what I get out of the Mark4

How to get less low end sag: dial the bass all the way down. How to get more midrange: Depends on the midrange you're looking for, but knowing your ear, probably the presence knob.
I've been dying to get one of those amps for well over a decade! People ask insane cash for them here.
If you had an issue with the head then there was something wrong with it. The head and combo are identical. The only differences are version A vs. version B, but for both the schematics are exactly the same between head and combo.

Sounds good but 2 + more speakers would be better more full sound especially for a gig just me cause for years i had my 1x12 and u miss alot of low end dynamics maybe on an island but on a island 4 x12 would still be great lol

The JP2C rules! One of the best heads I have owned. Great gain channels, cleans, and reverb. The dual EQs is great if you want a thick scoped and a pushed mid tone. Highly recommend checking it out.

@@belligerentamateur yeah i get that! but the mark series is a really tight amp as it is. im not saying that you shouldnt use a boost with a mark series. but you willl be amazed how tight the amp is without a boost if you set the 3 band to treble at 10, bass and mids at zero. and in terms of that high end fizz. you could try and jump the fx loop. on my mark iv it was a nice and easy way to make it sound smoother. =)
I've been a Mark guy for a long time. I love a boost with most high gain amps, but I do NOT like one with Marks. I feel like it makes them almost piercingly tight, and not in a good way. I feel like they can get plenty tight without it.

Yes the mark 5.. all other amps have a layer of dust on them. The only other amp I would say is it's equal is the all tube ampeg designed by the great Mr Jackson. Also the metaltronix.
Those mark series are child of fender bassman. where the tone stack are after 1st gain stage.
what most (like soldano) put that on the last stage . so basically mesa boogie is the same as SOLDANO .
Look up the schematics & you will see. ;)
That means it will act more as a boost or cut on gain .
that means the cleans are the best from fender Bassman series.
If you want more power amp gain or a extra gain. Loop is the option.

Ya to be frank bro, you need to practice a lot more on guitar and get some other riffs under your belt. I get bored hearing the same hardcore style riffs. You're good at dialing in tones but you need to get more creative with the riffs. I get that you want a sort of consistency but different riffs give you more ideas of what the amp is capable of. Most of the amps you're using are intended for metal, single string type riffs. Your playing style is more like a pushed rock amp type of gain. If you use an EVH, Engl or Mark, then you def gotta play some at the gates style riffage. 2cents I enjoy your content.
The only thing I "need" to do is exactly what I want to do, and I get to do it every day. Thanks for your input, though!
