The Americans inviting the British troops to an Independence Day party in a prison camp was the ultimate in class. One of my favorite scenes in this movie.
One of the best movies of all time. Donald Pleseance, the smart James Garner, Sir Attenborough, James Coburn is and so on and not to forget the best Terrence Steven McQueen. RIP Guys, you all did a great blockbuster. It must be a a great pleasure to work with these cool buddies.
I love how Hilts, Hendley, and Goff all take a swig off their own moonshine before stepping off, just to make sure they're all sauced enough for the celebration.
According to the IMDB site when McQueen does the double take at 3:30, it is because the other actor ad libbed the line "no taxation without representation." McQueen was looking at him because he thought he made a mistake, but they decided to leave it in.
@@misternewoutlook5437 his blindness wasn't sudden. His eyesight had been getting steadily worse due to his age and continuous work as a forger (examining papers etc, making sure the tiniest details were correct)
Donald Pleasence did serve in WW2..part of a Lancaster bomber crew and flew 50 plus missions before being shot down in the summer of 1944..and yes was in a POW camp
I always got a laugh from the British CO after taking a swig of white lightning asking Hilts "How....how are you are managing over there without us?" And naturally the Scotsman is like "I think it's rather good!" after downing his and going for another.
Always a treat to see James Garner and Steve McQueen! Thank you for posting and thanks to TH for the well wishes to his American fans/friends. Happy Independence Day USA! Celebrate safely.
The Brits are such close allies they're almost our first cousins across the pond. They're not even considered "foreigners." There's nothing the Yanks wouldn't do for them if they ever needed us. Hard to think of us ever having been mad at each other.
No, closer. An old alliance isn't the same as a close one - the Portuguese and Brits almost went to a war a few times in between, just avoided it. Just like people have a closer relationship with their kid than with someone they signed a work contract with long before they had that kid.
Mine? The US and Britain had been two war twice and they were definitely on edge during the American Civil War after the Trent Affair, though this was hypothetical - there was no way that would happen realistically since most of the UK's parliament wanted nothing to do with that and the Americans weren't about to bring in an external superpower. The Emancipation Proclamation made even more sure Britain and France kept out. There was the Fenian invasion but this was not by the US government. The UK and Portugal came even closer to war over territory in Africa in 1890, and in fact the Brits issued an ultimatum and the Portuguese national anthem "To arms!" is entirely based on this (the American anthem is based on the war of 1812, but funnily enough set to British music - cultural ties still ran deep). But regardless of all this, the British and Americans are fundamentally closer as a people and culture and felt as such when they were allies in WW2. What I said still applies: they had been allies less long, but were closer. Otherwise, you might as well argue that the US north and south are less allied than either is to Morocco, since they've had a war with each other more recently.
James Garner was my wife's first crush. I didnt get until I was older, but (he's obviously good looking) but there's also such a warmth and kindness he carries with him in every role. Extraordinary.
Have always loved The Great Escape :D Pleasance is such a sweetheart in it. And James Donald. And Gordon Jackson. They're all just so loveable. To the people who haven't seen the movie- you can just pick it up at Wal-Mart :)
Ashley-Pitt 'Dispersal' still alive. So is Willie 'Tunnel King'. Also a few of the minor characters. Funny enough, no American characters or characters died in the movie but the American actors are all dead now. Up with the British.
I loved this scene as a kid because it was the Americans and English celebrating the 4th. I didn’t get the humor surrounding the moonshine until I was an adult.
THANK YOU, HIDDLES! Happy 4th to you too! Even if you don't celebrate it...if you're still in Detroit, hope you're having a blast! Hellooooo Army! lol...this is a great clip.
Does anyone know the title of the Scottish song Ives and MacDonald are singing when they’re celebrating the coming escape? The tune is so familiar, an old folk song. But because it’s in dialect I can only understand “...Broomielaw”, the name of the town. The movie was on TCM today, 5/25/20. I’ve seen it so many times I had no plans to watch it again. But there are SO many outstanding performances. I had to see Steve McQueen on that motorcycle again. I spend the last half hour in tears. I know the Gestapo murdering the 50 men is true. I don’t know if only three men got away. If so, the character Hadley (James Garner) was right to ask,”Was it worth it, sir?” Anyway, if anyone has the title of the Scottish folk song I’d appreciate it greatly.
Here is a link to the sound track…. Look under the description and has list of songs. Name might be listed. If not that I’d look for the end credits and see if it’s listed. God Bless th-cam.com/video/v5w2lixqPZM/w-d-xo.html
Really?!! I cannot believe this! I'm an American woman, in my 60s. All of this time, for whatever reason, it NEVER 🚫 dawned on me. 😳 The wonderful actor in this movie, R.A., is the SAME R.A. that I'm always watching and listening to in all of the wonderful films, documentaries, etc. It literally JUST occurred to me five minutes ago! I love the very good, great movies like, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen, etc., etc. I'm going to have to say that IF I were a British woman, I definitely would've know for several decades. (My sincere apologies to Mr. Attenborough.)
One of the guy movies I can watch one hundred times and watch it again. Like Patton and the dirty dozen and the longest day. There are chic flick. My wideband I had 3 daughters but there are guy flicks.
Those of us here in America appreciate Tom sharing this scene! Moonshine, one of the South's greatest inventions. ;D "Down the British! Up the rebels!"
Great entertainment from Hollyweird. The truth is that there were No Americans involved in the real great escape, no James Garner, no Charles Bronson, no Steve McQueen and certainly no motorcycle stunts.

It is good, but my favorite is the cafe scene
Can't believe how good this film hold up today. Timeless.
No taxation without representation. That line kills me every time
Yes, even Steve McQueen seems rather surprised by it. -mikenotpaula,
He was - it wasn’t in the script!
Taxation is theft!
"Up the rebels; down the British!"
The best two lines in the movie.
" _Down with the British!_ " -- All the while serving British officers with moonshines.
_Well it do be like that sometimes_
Yes...it do.
No one forced them to drink it. It's a celebration for Americans and British.
Bloddy racist
This scene made the movie for me. I don't care if its not historically accurate. Its flipping hilarious.

I wish they had continued it with another post showing McQueen and Ives celebrating the almost completion of "Tom".

Nice to see Donald Pleasance in a role where he is not some psycho, monster or villain. "It's not Napolean Brandy."

Donald Pleasance another lost Hollywood star R.I.P too!

That's because the Scotch-Irish settlers of western PA, NC, VA gave us moonshine.

Tom, you perfect human being. And this fits his personality so well. I could definitely see him reacting to all of this with a, "Down the British!"
