Beginner mentality of a former perfectionist | Sewing diaries Ep. O2

  • ☀️ Mindset is perhaps one of the biggest defining factors as to how well you navigate through anything that comes your way, how much value you can reap from those things, make it your own and keep on growing. I used to be a perfectionist and was hyper-focused on the end result, but in the last couple of years, I have slowly shifted my focus towards seeing the value that the process gives me instead, whether that’s with sewing, or learning languages, work, or my relationships with other people. The thought patterns of the former perfectionist still pop up every once in a while, and there’s no better time to work on it than now.
But of course, as the philosophers say, change is the only constant in life. So inevitably, as things change around you, your mindset ideally molds and shifts along with that. I find that reevaluating my mindset often helps keep me in check, to make sure that I’m progressing in the direction that supports my core values. For me, learning to become less goal-oriented and more growth-oriented has truly been a breath of fresh air. And if you haven’t already, I highly encourage you to give it a try :)
Thank you again for all the love and support on Episode 1! I actually filmed the entirety of episode 2 before episode 1 was uploaded so I haven’t been able to implement any of the tips you guys left me 😭 However, ya best believe I will be using them in Episode 3 💪

    You did great 🤩🙌🏻🥳
Also, immediately start saying “no” to any and all family requests for garments or you will never leave your sewing room 😅 (only half joking…!)

      Thanks for the support!!
Also it sounds like you're speaking from experience 😆 in which case, I'll be sure to only say yes to projects I wanna do and can handle then hehe💪

All three projects turned out beautiful. I especially love the pants!
Through sewing, I really learned the virtue of patience, forgiving myself and persistence. I also learn to take time to do things and put them aside to continue another day. I'm quite impatient and live in a fast paced society, so it's been a real journey learning to check and recheck my measurements and pinning, learning to enjoy taking things slowly as a hobby, and having to complete a whole project by myself - I can't just pay someone to seam rip my mistake for me.

I totally can relate to the urge of doing things perfectly and it’s so exhausting! Then I decided to exercise imperfection 😂😂 minor things of course so I can little by little get used to the sense that I don’t have to be perfect all the time.

Thanks for sharing! It kinda gets more fun that way, and so experimenting with new techniques become less scary, and then there's so much more room to learn. Sending you lots of good vibes for your sewing journey 😊💛

Why don't you take an existing pillow case next time and trace it for size and add seam allowance? Or take apart an old worn out or stained pillow case if you have one and seam rip it to take apart and then you've got that pattern.

That's a great idea, thank you! I don't know why it didn't occur to me in the first place. My guess is the irrational anxiety to do everything to a T prevents you from thinking rationally (and arguably, find the easier approach). I'll keep these pointers in mind next time I make more pillowcases :)
