Valiant Hearts it's a game based on real letters send during the WW1, it's an absolute masterpiece.
The soldier who sent the letter to Ernie's parents had such a lovely Irish accent that comes through his writing. So awfully tragic but really lovely to get small glimpses into these lives.

KawiLover250 it is really sad to think about it, you can only imagine how it must have been, but as he said it feels closer since he had to film about it. i feel close to the first world war too. my great grandpa lived during this time & every time i see a documentary i can’t help but thinking that he lived during this time (he was Swiss, so i am not sure how traumatic this was for the swiss, but i do know that he also had the Spanish influenza & survived)
He also has Jewish heritage, such as myself, though we both identify as atheists - for the past 2000+ years we haven’t had the best luck. Medieval Europe had countries like England expel Jews, Spain forced them to convert in the wake of the Inquisition, some blamed us for the Black Death and some went as far burning us alive. My family left Germany in the late 1800s because they were already getting threats of violence and such because they were Jews with money. And of course we all know the Holocaust.
Or there could be other sad happenings in his family that are more recent and personal he doesn’t discuss. Like poor David Bowie and his older half brother who was mentally ill his whole life, kills himself by walking into the path of an oncoming train if I remember correctly. The way Daniel talks, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone in his family took their own life, or nearly did.
I watched the part where it said jewels were Imported from south africa thats an interesting choice of words might i add 🤦♀️

That is how death notifications were carried out at that time. The sheer number of casualties in WWI overwhelmed the normal protocol, and the process was far more impersonal during and after WW2.

What beautiful love letters. I can't imagine living in that time period...millions of lives lost, and millions of others left devastated by their loss. The number of stories like Ernie and Genie is so great that it's hard to even wrap your head around so much pain and grief. I love Daniel's comment though that at least he was loved and his time on Earth was worth having.
I was just watching this today (feb 14th) so Genie and Ernie got married 105 years ago today! Happy anniversary such a sweet and sad story

This made me tear up something awful.😢 Especially realizing this story was echoed again and again during that god awful war. My great grandpa Jim Williams went with all five of his brothers to the trenches in U.S Army. My great grandpa Cornelius serve in the British West Indies regiment in the middle east . This war made us all kindred in suffering. Bless Ernie.
This makes me want to start up writing love letters to my now-husband again so that maybe one day future members of my family will get to know my husband and how dearly wonderful he is in the eyes of my heart :')
You should definitely do that. You could also put one in an airtight container and bury it somewhere special to you both. Who knows - maybe an archaeologist will dig it up in 1,000 years time!
Good idea. Everything is so digital now..it's actually kind of sad that we don't even print pictures often. If my family tree gets burnt and the internet somehow gets erased or a part of it does, then my future grand children won't know me..sad really..

You can search many military records for free. Just look on the internet. You would be shocked what u can find. A simple internet search lead to many discoveries in my family. Fires, suicides, war, King Henry VIII!
jamie Yoho The story is, that he on his way bakc home from Russia to Hungary by foot with one othe man from our town. They saw a house and he went there, the other one didn’t. They didn’t hear anything from him since. The pronounce him dead after many years. But who knows what ecsactly happened.

I was so struck by the graceful handwriting on the ancient pages of these letters. How much more significant and personal these letters feel, compared to modern-day emails... Even when printed out, emails don't carry that same sense of immediacy that handwritten letters do; nobody really physically touched the pages, and a font can never reproduce an individual's handwriting. Worst of all -- emails are far too easy to delete at a single click, and regret following a deletion always comes too late... I would urge everyone to handwrite a letter to someone you love today and let them know how much they mean to you. Hopefully, they will keep it and treasure it through the years to come. Such letters have become all too rare in the 21st Century... 😺💕🐾

Not to minimise the tragedy and suffering of war, but Daniel reading the roll of honour at the church in Banbridge reminds me of Harry and Hermione at the grave of Ignotus Peverell at the churchyard in Godric's Hollow.

Finally! I’ve found the thing that turns Harry back into Daniel. I’m a hardcore Potterhead and I’ve really struggled to watch anything else with Dan in it. This has humanised (poor phrasing, my apologies) him again. I can now move forward. I’ve searched for a while to find something that gets rid (again poor phrasing) of the potteresque facade (from poor phrasing to posh all of a sudden) that Dan has.
