- Made this video this morning because my car started messing up yesterday. I was really concerned seeing as I just repaired a shredded timing belt the week before. My transmission was shifting erratically and was reading 20 MPH while standing still. I had the check engine codes pulled and they came up with transmission problems. So I did some investigating and fixed it myself. I made a video so people won't just get taken for ride at Transmission shops...Check it out

Dude this was the best video this needs to get spread viral for Pacifica owners because I had the same problem about three years ago and couldn’t figure out what the hell the problem was and then one day I changed the alternator and yes it did stop but I thought it was just a shot of luck ..thanks for confirming the problem
I don't know what we would do if we didn't have folks like you posting TH-cam vids. I have replaced the alternator twice for this issue [2005 Pacifica]. The first was a auto wreckers used; same problem a year later. The second is a *new* Remy 160amp replacement. We'll see if it lasts!!
You don't even know how much of a lifesaver you are thank you very much for posting this video I just got finished fixing my alternator I was scared as shit last night I went to AutoZone I bought a speed sensor A TCM sensor and all it was was the alternator my 2006 Chrysler Pacifica was doing the same thing your car was just doing thank you very very much

I love this car, but hate the small issues that arise from it. Just repaired broken fuel vacuum line connecting to fuel pump causing check engine light. Video's like yours have been so helpful. Thank you again!
I have a question if my acceleration in 1st is slow, would that be a similar issue ?
Thanks for posting your video Walter. The dealership told me they never heard of the problem and found no issues after test driving my 2006 Pacifica with 116,000 miles. I just picked it up from St. Charles Chrysler tonight. I don't think it even took me five minutes when I got home to Google the problem and find your solution. So I took it to O'Reillys Auto Store and they confirmed that the alternator failed the diode test. I installed a $215 re-manufactured alternator tonight and now it runs like a champ. Now there's no whining or revving or shifting problems.
This video helped me out so much some time ago. I don't know if I comment before, but I saw this video again. My car wouldnt shift out of 2nd gear, was making a weird whirring sound. When I unplugged the alternator the noise stopped, so I changed alternator. Thanks alot.

After you changed the alternator did your car begin shifting out of 2nd gear? I have the low voltage and bad shift solenoid codes. . . .
My daughter gave me her 2004 Pacifica, several years ago, to use as a beater car. It's actually pretty nice. We won't discuss the price of rear shocks!!But, it had transmission and electrical issues. I havent had any major electrical problems lately (knock on wood).
The transmission kept reverting to "learn" mode. I think I just found the problem, thanks to South Main Auto Repair's video on low beam problems.
There was a heavy gauge wire broken off of one of the ground lugs.
To cure my transmission problem, I had rigged a wire from the engine block, to the ground on the battery. Hadn't had a problem since.
I miss the days of no electronic crap on cars. 🙄
Dude perfect, car was throwing 21 different codes. Replaced the alt and fired it up and everything was working like it was supposed to. I new it was a voltage issue but I was thinking pcm 🤬 glad I checked ur video.

Last week I was waiting for the light to turn red, and suddenly the speedometer started to set 20mph to 30mph, the car felt like it was shifting speed while I was at the red light!! VERY SCARY. I do not know how I got home that day.. I found two videos on TH-cam (this one where was one of them) the car also was doing the same noise that makes the car in this video, so I told the mechanic to change the alternator.. The mechanic said "I had checked the atlernador and it's working fine", but I insisted and he did what I said ..
"Problem solved"!!

You're confirming my suspicions on my Pacifica.... But, I found an alternator at the junkyard for $65. Always check the junkyards.
I just had O’reilly’s check mine tonight and came up that I needed a vehicle speed sensor for a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica. It was only 23.74 but now I’m not sure if I should just go ahead and have it replaced or put in a new alternator. I’ve already replaced the alternator a few months ago, but it was from a salvage yard. You’ve definitely given me something to think about though. Thanks for sharing.
I also experienced this same problem, 20 MPH speed when stopped. Replacing the alternator resolved basically everything that was going wrong with the car. Thanks so much for sharing this!

@@ariass9345 would downshift horribly, shift very sloppily and it would jerk me around at stoplights. Was very nervous to chnage alternator and then the trans be bad but it was worth it. Even though the car is gone now, engine blew 2 months ago
What if you test your alternator and it reads good 14.4 I changed my speed sensor and it is still doing the same thing

Had the same issue with my 2005 Pacifica. After a $300 trip to the shop to replace the transmission sensor I still had shifting problems. I drove it using the AutoStick feature on the transmission because the automatic shifting still did not work properly. About 6 months later my alternator went out, and I drove it for a couple of days on just the battery until I could replace the alternator. With no alternator, all of my electrical problems disappeared, including the transmission shifting problem. When I installed the new alternator, all of my previous electrical problems completely vanished and the transmission worked like new.
I'm not having SHIFTING issues but the speedometer goes up and down eradictly while driving down road

One thing I want to add, the Car belong to my dad, He died a Week ago today, I do not have the heart to get rid of the Car (2006) Chrysler Pacifica. And I found out that the Car is a Salvage car. It runs well and he had it fixed, water pump replaced, belts hoses replaced radiator fixed. drove it and had no problems. I know that I will have a hard time with getting insurance once I renew. But again, I just do not have the heart to get rid of the car, it is the Only thing that I have of my Father.

redcat900 insure with geico i pay 97 with terrible driving history and car has 299000+ miles. Some companies alao have a 500$ year term for 2004 to 2009 pacificas. But i have has many tickes with a chevy i had b4 and i find geico to be best for me vs 140+ with progressive and state farm

Yes so true. Happened to me four years ago and I thought I was having transmission problems. After three days with dealership trying to figure it out, that's exactly what it ended up being, the alternator.
Had the same problem with our old caravan! Got stuck in second and it was the alternator the whole time!

Happened to my 2005 Pacifica. New alternator fixed it all. Also these cars had bad ground cable to chassis.
So I have the same issue and the mechanic is saying it's the transmission. And did replacing the alternator really fix this problem if so I'm not gonna believe the mechanic

Same problem. I went to a honorable trans. service. Told me not transmission. Also told me about a poss. leaking diode in alternator (from one of his customers - not his troubleshooting). YOUR VIDEO PRETTY MUCH CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM. THANKS SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO. Will replace alt. tomorrow.

Just bought a 80 dollar alternator and it's working great now lol after paying shops and them saying they wouldn't touch it because because all these problems with the transmission... Lol crazy...
Having the exact same issue the mechanics gave me a new alternator but it’s still doing this. It did fix all the electrical stuff that was going on too (headlights out, sunroof would work, all warning lights on, windows wouldn’t work) but even with the new one it’s still sitting at 20mph when stopped and in any gear unless in park. Was the alternator they put in also bad or is there something else this could be?
Take it to a parts store and have the diode on the alternator tested. If the diode is bad then the alternator is bad even if everything else works

I have a 2006 300C with U0100 and P0700 intermittent stalling same issues I found everywhere with this car they say it's the TCM and recently I read somewhere on a Dodge forum that the alternator was upsized or replaced and that's all the transmission communication or loss of communication because that's the only two coats I get the ones above they already fixed the gas tank issue replace the whole thing but maybe it's just the alternator and low voltage like yours

B E yes, it absolutely will. Whenever you come to a stop your transmission will switch gears.
Working on an 06 now. With no start because of range selector. Range selector is part of valve body. Transmission is now being cracked open. Don't let a starter fool ya.

Its dirty mechanics that give cars a bad rep. . A dirty mechanic would have had charge you 3000 for transmission. They need to be regulated and inspected.

your mechanic will argue you down and tell you no way it could be your alternator and will not be willing to change it. they will send you to transmission shop. tell them you want alternator changed anyway. most mechanics are unfamiliar with this problem. this is the only car that i know of that the alternator makes it seem like you hav a bad transmission.
I cant tell you how many issues are fixed by new alternator on pacificas. Im on my 3rd alternator.

I have the same car and it just all the sudden had problems with the transmission one night and I couldn’t drive it think it went in limp mode. I put the scanner on it and it pulled the code for bad tcm or issues and. Another code that said either low voltage or battery. Been having to jump my battery a lot could it be the same issue that I need an alternator for the tcm or if it’s just the battery could that be what’s making the tcm have the issues
We have a Chrysler Pacifica 2005. And it did the same thing when we bought the car they overfilled the oil and all the other stuff we had to take out at least a gallon of overfilled oil and then our car started acting normal again. It did the same thing though I put it into drive and it shoot up to 20 miles per hour on the speedometer. No a year or two later we heard of having trouble with our transfer case I'm pretty sure so I don't know what to do now.

Why don't you suggest putting a jumper on the battery to test before you piss $300 away on an alternator.

Ok I watched it but was your alternator still charging though
I found out after 4 shops and a new battery. It was an intermittent alternator problem. It would act up at times and the trans would do crazy things, then other times it would just fine no problems. After 5 months of that i decided to get a new altenator. It has ran perfect ever since.
did the car still drive when you had that transmission issue?
Joseph mine still drove but I'm pretty sure it was fucking the car up it was stuck in limp mode it wouldn't go any faster than 50 miles an hour unless I was going downhill and threw it in neutral

You are a good Help, I have a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, a engine light just came in and I had it checked, it read a catalytic converter leak, but I detected No leaks anywhere and the car runs well. ?? Any thoughts on that. ?
redcat900 could be something like mine i get one every time i drive in very wet conditions. when ig dries up out it goes away. just haven't had time to really dig into as it does not effecte to much
Walter Spychalski O.k., I have rev it up and no problem, No noises or anything, should I reset it and see if the engine light comes on again, it needs a oil change, other than that it runs great.

we drove ours for 8 years and with the exception of a timing belt and this problem she was a good car

Did your car suddenly sound like the transmission broke while accelerating? And any time I shift from drive to park it sounds like the bands are stripping. That said, the speedometer reads about the same as yours when in the gearshift is set to drive. but no movement. no reverse gear. literally had to have my husband guide the car back riding the brakes down the hill to a safer spot - and the emergency brake suddenly stopped working.

I have a silhouette(venture, montana) that had similar 'tranny issues' because of a bad fuel pressure regulator(it stopped when I replaced it). intermittent temp light and the transmission would be constantly switching from a safe mode. So weird.

What about the fuel gauge? Could that be related to the low voltage issue?

This same situation happened to my 2005 pacifica...luckily the repair guy was honest and replaced the alternator...you paid 300 for a alternator..sounds kinda high..i think i paid 200...

Time for a new Alternator...certainly a lot cheaper than transmission repairs.
I have rwplaced mine once before and this just happened again. Before id have bad fuel delivery. And abs lights coming on abs engaging while coming to a stop. From lets say 60mph while i whould reach 20mph or so i would engage and that was horrific. I now have 299500miles and havent had any problems in about a year.
You have pretty much 300k miles on your Pacifica?? How would you rate it's reliability and cost of ownership?

also mine only goes up to 35 MPH
it's a bad diode in the Alternator, the alternator will still charge your battery.

I have a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica and my transmission would not shift out of park and apparently the shifter lever was bent and would not get out of park and I replaced the transmission and now my speedometer is now 2 mph slow. I know it’s not a bad thing but I like to have an accurate speedometer reading could someone please help me
