    Went on a ride last night. The guy leading the pack was on a fat bike with a HUGE beard and flannel shirt..... the legend is real.

    If you have it, ride it. Who gives a shit. People are way too picky snobby nowadays. I have never ridden a bike that I didnt have fun on. Fat bikes look like they'd be a blast, especially in the snow.

    These bikes are sooo awesome, they soo good to ride at night, becouse you don't see anything, but you don't need to see when you got this bike. If you hit a bear or a tree, you don't feel anything. Fat bike - Tank on 2 wheels

    I'm a downhiller, trail rider, XC-racer, roadie and now fatbike rider.
    I've gotta say that I love riding my Spez Fatboy Pro. Such a fun bike and it can really hold its own in the downhills. Setting the bike up with light tires and tubeless is paramount and quickens the respons a lot! It's my favorite bike in the quiver of five high-end bikes and the one I ride the most.
    Try it..

      Andreas can I ask a question? How much suspension is there on a fully-rigid fatbike? Can it handle rough trail as well as normal hardtail mtb, do those tires make up for a lack of front (or even rear) suspension?

    They are becoming very popular here in the Midwest. They're good trail bikes and loads of fun on snow. Also, on flowing flat or downhill ground, they can really fly.

    I finally bought a fat bike almost a year ago; and it's really opened up a different "type" of biking for me, other than the regular single track riding (which is what I still like doing a lot). But, my fat bike has encouraged me to try riding in locations I would have never given any real thought to before: such as beaches, rocky/gravelly shorelines of area lakes, and snow, of course. It's inspiring me to do some bike packing, as well. With single track, it's those big tires that give such incredible grip that I find the most impressive thing with fat bikes. Their not road bikes, nor a (typical) mountain bike---fat bikes are something in-between them. I love mine a lot. I'm glad to see this review!

    I did an XC ride on a rail-to-trail ride. It was extremely muddy and wet everywhere. My 29er could handle most of the mud and puddles, but the back end would slide around when I put the power down. The guy riding with me was on a Surly fat bike and he handled everything without any problems. On the flats and downhills I was faster, but in the mud and puddles, he blew past me.

    Dogs seem to fear/respect fatbikes. I encounter a lot of off-leash dogs on my fatbike ride. They can see and hear these big tires coming at them and get out of the way. I even have some that cower behind their owner.

    Once you get FAT, you never go back. Well, that's true for a couple of our ski test team members anyway. The ability to cross small rivers laden with round stones and rolling over all that rocky scree we have here in the Western U.S. is a major plus. The FAT bikes seem to haul ass downhill and we think it's because they roll "over" everything instead of rolling "through" it, especially rocks, tree roots and the occasional Elk scat. Are they fun in the winter? Not as much fun as riding a chairlift and Alpine skiing down. Great vid guys. Love your Channel!

    I bought my Motobecane fat bike through bikesdirect almost a year ago and absolutely love it!!! I live on a dirt road, just seconds from miles of dirt and sand. A fat bike was the perfect choice. My best advice is to look carefully at the weight. You pay extra for a lighter bike but it's really worth it. Mine is a 27 speed and the shipping weight was just over 20 lbs! These are stats that add up to great fun. I may be putting in a little extra effort but that low, low gear will take me up just about anything and I'm not getting jarred to pieces by hard, skinny tires. Glide over some soft sand one time and you will be convinced to go FAT.!

      john johnson haha. Nope, I don't care what people are riding - just something I'm noticing. Now and then, I ride my Raleigh M80 mtn bike with 2.5" tires in town because I don't like the feeling of leaving my $1600 road bike locked outside on the bike rack if I'm biking to try out new restaurants. I'm certain they're riding it just to ride around because the nearest trail where I live is 40 miles away.

  • @fishkrx
    @fishkrx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    They are a great addition to the quiver! What you do with them depends on where you live. I'm in Idaho U.S., been riding Fat for 3 years - I ride mine in the shoulder seasons when the snow is coming or going, and of course in winter. In no way will it replace my 27.5 trail bike for summer singletrack. BUT here's the thing: since I bought the fatbike my roadbike sits on the trainer. I'd rather ride forest roads or "flatish" gravel roads or trails for an easy recovery day than a road bike. They are the perfect compliment for a mountain bike, not a replacement.

    Hey guys, iam riding a Fat Bike since March 2015 and i never had so much fun riding a Mountainbike. I use it for my every Day Round across the Fields and in the Forest. If there ist much Mud around, fun will be massively increased. You can drive every where on every ground. Sure on Roads the bike isn't so fast , you have to pedal harder than on a normal bike... but Offroad you are the King....and pedaling onroad ist just like training :P..... In that Video the Guy is right, you have to pedal a little bit more to get it fast like a normal bike... but if you are fast one time, you stay so f***ing fast nobody can catch up... Near my Flat is a Gravel mine.... you can imagine how much fun it is to ride there.
    Everyone who starts thinking about.... buy one and try it out ;) you will be suprised ....

    Gotta say: One of the funniest videos you've done.
    As for the merits of fat bikes: I've never had one so I can't speak for myself, but I know a buddy who's brought his Surly Moonlander to a Cycle Asia 40km mass-participation ride event on asphalt and his time was pretty competitive. Said buddy also has folding bikes and a road bike.
    I guess you could say a fat bike could also be some sort of training tool. If you have the legs to power a fat bike and keep a decent average speed, then that'll help you once you get on a road bike or MTB.

    My local bike shop has a specialized Fatboy fatbike demo unit so I tried on our local trails and they are fun to ride. I was looking into them because the trails here in WI are only open to fatbikes in the winter. I'll definitely be buying one as soon as I have the money for it

    • @alantaylor6691
      @alantaylor6691 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is it about the fatbike that makes it ok for use on the winter trails and rules out the normal mtbs? Is it because in winter the trails are muddy and the increased flotation of a fatbike doesn't dig into and ruin the trails?

  • @whereareyou2
    @whereareyou2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With a mid-range trail bike and a mid-range fatbike in my arsenal, I can say that I enjoy riding my fatbike much more than my trail bike. No it's not as fast, and the lack of suspension makes it a little rougher, but I feel unstoppable. It's also the go-to for night rides because you don't have to worry about hitting anything and losing traction.

  • @thelonerider5644
    @thelonerider5644 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Old school rider here... mostly 26" and often home built singlespeed hardtails. But...After the big snow last winter I got one. And to my surprise found it worked great on regular trails! If I had my druthers I'd swap the 4" tires for 3.4" or so, but other than that, it rocks. And the funny thing is, it made fully rigid bikes viable again for offroading for me. ....with those big tires you don't need suspension. Plus, you can actually bunny hop one with platform pedals; they aren't light, but they are decently balanced.

    I've been wanting to ride one of these since they come out but I've always been weary that in I'd be exhausted once I got to the top before I got to go down. Back in the 90's I came across a set of 3.0 wide 26" tires that I absolutely fell in love with and completely changed riding for me and then that bike got stolen and I could never find another set of these tires. I think the new 650b+ and 29er + might just be the best of both worlds.

    Got mine end of last Summer, spent $1500 on it, which made it a top of the middle line from KHS. Rode a lot of gravel tracks in the Fall, did some off-roading through sand pits and wet muddy fields, none of which I could have done on my regular man bike. Rode a lot in the snow this past winter, one the trails were groomed for snowmobiles, and it was awesome. This winter we'll be taking it off the snowmobile trails and onto walking trails in the forest and see how that goes. We average -30 for 3 months, so gotta get out riding and this is the fix.

      I bought a fully rigid fatbike last year and have ridden it on almost every singletrack trail that I have ridden my mt bike on. In some technical rocky sections the fatbike is actually easier to ride than my full suspension mt bike. Weird. But fun as hell. Biggest downfall with a fatbike; you don't want to have to carry it. So if there's even a possiblity of doing a hike-a-bike, then I go with the skinner (relatively) lighter mt bike

  • @StormLaker

    Definitely on my wish list for Christmas. I commute to work in a region where getting up to a foot or more of snow in one storm is not uncommon. My 700c wheels get bogged down in anything over 3-4 inches, maybe 6 depending on the type of snow. I rode a fatbike a friend of mine has one day last winter, I am sold. You are right, little bit more effort to get going, but once you get the tires rolling it's game on!!! Those tires will roll over anything- logs, rocks, railroad ties, concrete curbs are hardly a problem rolling up over with those 4" tires. Now if they could just lower the price tag....in the meantime, the discount shops (ie Walmart) are selling a knock off for $250....you may have to change out some parts...and it's definitely not a Surly or a Salsa.....but for those of us who live on a beer budget, haha!

    I have a Borealis Crestone Fatbike and I love it. it is so effortless to get my 26x4.4 tires moving on paved road which is what I purchased mine for. And it is very easy to pace oneself while riding because it is so efficient. I bought mine To lose weight, get in shape and reduce my high blood pressure. I was biased as well before riding one and after riding one for 10 seconds knew that I liked it better than a mountain bike.

My girlfriend has a Norco Bigfoot, she cranks the heck out of her 4" tires, she has no problems getting it up to speed, I'm sure you can. They really aren't hard to get going, with the wheel cutouts, tires that are getting lighter and lighter, more and more tech going into making them light. My Fatboy is sub 30lbs. I have a Voodoo Wazoo Fat bike 4 inch tyres and 26 inch rims and they are more than amazing to ride on roads, dirt tracks, snow, sand and all the other types of places. I have had it since my birthday last November and I have lost count of how many people have said "wow they are big tyres" or "can i have a go" or just "that bike is unbelievable". When I do give people a go of my Fat bike they say it is amazing to ride and it is so smooth and comfy. I get a lot of stares when i go out riding lol, properly off the loud tyre noise lol.

    I would like to try it for a commute. Smooth surface tires would be faster on asphalt than knobby ones. Maybe I'll purchase it if dirt and cratered roads are alternatives to major roads.

    I am NOT a mountain biker- but I have a fat tire cruiser bike that I love. I am a big guy- I find that the the fat tire bike supports my weight better than a skinnier tire and that the fat tire is very comfortable on my back - I guess the volume of air in the tires act a bit like suspension in absorbing bumps and not transferring them so harshly into my lower back. A bit more work to pedal in some situations. I think its a good choice for people that are heavier or have back problems that are causing them to bike less, or consider giving up biking altogether as i did for years.

    Since i have a fat bike (2 years), i can't go back on my enduro bike. I did enduro race on my fat bike this year and i went as fast or even faster than my friend on a regular bike... And i can ride all along the year especially on snow, and it's awesome trust me.

    I see plenty of guys using fat bikes in normal dirt trails, but they do seem more sweaty since you do need more pedal effort since the contact patch is huge.

    They roll great. I thought you'd mention the way the tires actually pull into the turns (turning right, the wheel will pull right). That took some getting used to. Lotsa fun but not as great as a regular XC bike.

    I've got 2 of these bikes, a Indi mulefa fat-bike with 4" road tyres and a coyote fatman with 4" knobblys, saw them at first and thought "this is going to be a total waste of money" but they really aren't, the Indi is stupid fun on roads and really comfortable at speed above 20+ MPH where any other bike doesn't, road noise is reduced a hell of a lot and if you want to take a shortcut on the way home via dirt track it's perfectly fine.
    The coyote is on the other end of the scale, it's very heavy, heavy to pedal and feels very uncontrollable above 20+MPH, if you have ever tried to ride a bike at normal speed with a flat tire the Coyote feels the exact same, but on the other hand on a mountain bike or BMX track it feels perfect to ride and like GMBN said it feels as though it's got endless grip.
    Personally My own opinion I more use the Indi because I ride on a road more and the Fatman Feels Sluggish And Heavy but when I do go off road unless it's really bad i will stick to the Mulefa.

    Love my Fatty on the right kind of trail, the right kind of terrain. Bought it as an alternative to x-country skiing in winter, but enjoy riding it all year round. Pluses and minuses for sure, they seem to cancel one another out. A different riding experience, one that I enjoy.

    Love my Kona Wo fatbike with it's big ole 26x4.8" wheels and just as tall as the 27.5 on my Trek Fuel EX 9.8 and with the 26x4.8" tires being as tall and wide as they are, the Kona seems to float over obstacles that slowed or stopped me on some short technical climbs in the past. Plus, it's an attention getter. Especially with an old guy like me riding it.
    Then there's riding it in sandy areas with traditional mt bikers. At 210 lbs, I used hate sand on my mt bike. With the fatbike, I now laugh at sand and there's been times that I've pasted smaller mt bikers who bogged down in the sand. FUN times!!

    I love my fatbike... in the winter, where all the trails are buried under meters of snow and packed down by snowshoers and the roads are narrow slicks of ice. Then, it makes sense... but to choose to ride it in the spring/fall/summer would be like choosing to ride my road bike on the trails or my FS mountain bike in a road race - it's not the right tool for the job.

    Yeah would not take the advice of a someone riding it for a short trail. or from someone so slight either. I have one and love it. It's light, fast and great fun, a nice change from road and mtb. Each bike gives you a different position to ride in and gives you a rest from your previous ride. He should do a review after having ridden it for several days and done a few hundred miles on it. Not off just one day jumping round a trail.

    I love my 2017 Radrhino but here in the UK these laws in the last few years have turned me into a criminal whenever I ride it. We cannot have a motor more powerful than 250W even though my bike cannot go above 15mph. We have to insure them and have to wear a "motorcycle helmet" as they are classed as mopeds! Most do not register their bikes but a few folk have fallen foul of these laws and have been fined and points on their driving licence.
    I am pissed off worrying about it so I have pre-ordered a 2019 Haibike fatsix 9.0 and I can't wait until Feb/March to be street legal as Fattie riding is just so good

    Tried a fatbike. The super wide q-factor of the pedals/cranks gave me pains switching between bikes with more 'normal' width q-factor, no matter how I adjusted my fat bike position. There's just not enough adjustability in clipless cleats to narrow the q-factor enough.
    Would love to try the new + size trail bikes,though.

      Mike Williams Unfortunately 95% of my riding is on the road. Whenever I get to go MTB'ing, I usually am out riding for at least a few hours (longer hours didn't help the pains either). The fat bike was just something I wanted to try, thought it'd be fun. It definitely was.

    I think there's a great opportunity for fat bikes or plus bikes with new riders. I would love to see how someone who's not as accomplished on a mountain bike feels on these. If they add more grip or dumb down the ride a little bit, the larger tires might be a great option for riders just starting out on the trails or former roadies.

    For me it felt like the tires gave me a dangerous ammount of confidence I did some stuff i wouldn't get away with on my 650b and it was fun but I'd much rather a 26/27.5 with regular tires, the drawbacks for me personally are too much, perhaps in 5 years fat bikes will offer what I want but until then i'll keep experimenting.

      +Global Mountain Bike Network I didn't like it on soft beach sand but is excellent on loose sand in trails if it's reasonably firm. I've only been riding it for a few months. I've only a cheapy Nitro but it's a lot of fun to ride; absolutely needs first gear for uphill; only have a SEVEN GEARED version; no hi/low. I'm no biker but this has won me over big time. My son now uses my Avanti.
