How to Remove Carrier Bearings

  • This video is a quick demonstration to show how to remove carrier bearings. Although there are other methods out there, these are the three most common which focuses on the DIY people.

    Wish I'd seen this before farting around with the clamshell puller LOL; it worked ok for the pinion, had to make a jig to work in my press for the carrier; I still bent the clamshell and only have one of them off

    Quick tip freezing the bearing also allows u to install it smoothly and thanks for these tips my carrier bearing just failed on the driver side axle

    This totally works, however I ended up getting a piece of metal schrapnel embedded in the tip of my finger when a corner of the hard bearing steel broke off, went like a bullet straight into me! Wear gloves!! Or better yet (I did this on the second one) grind a little extra and form a V notch instead of a straight notch, to match the angle of your chisel. This way things wont want to fracture so readily, and also the force transmits to a spreading action instead of an edge just trying to dig into the flanks of the chisel.

    My chisel slipped and damaged the journal under the cone with a slight nick, am I ok to press on new bearings or is the diff no good now?

      Depends on how bad. The big thing is to smooth it out.

    Watched all your videos on gears, some of them multiple times. I just remove the carrier out of my Dana 44 today, and next weekend I will be installing an ARB and new gears. I've heard you say on a couple videos that that you have done enough gears that you know roughly about where to start shim wise. Any pointers on starting shims for a Dana 44 and a Dana 30? Of course going from stock carriers to ARBs with 5.13s, not that the gear size matters, and I have set up races for both.. Thanks

      Start with what was in the axle as a baseline. It'll put you very close. My guess for starting shims is when I start with an empty housing, otherwise I'll use what's in there already. For a Dana 30 and 44 it'll be roughly 50-60 thou.

      Thank you, again, for the information. I can measure the pinion to get a reference, but the carrier not so much.
      My plan was to measure the pinion and try and guestimate what is on the carrier.

      @@ace36m the carrier will be what it will be. Keep adding shims until it gets tight. Move them side to side until you get your backlash in spec. You shouldn't be able to pull the locker out by hand.

    So my husband used the dremel method and he did fine but it still wasn’t cracking when he hit it with the cold chisel so he cut a bit more and knicked the top of the journal. Is this a total loss or will it not cause any issues?

    Hi Mike, another great content! when you don’t have new bearings (and spec info)and cannot compare the wearing of old bearings how to determine if they need to be replaced? Regards

      The carrier should have some preload. If it doesn't, and you can pull it straight out without using force, then they are probably worn.
      The main thing I do is pull the carrier and inspect the bearings. If the rollers are pitted or damaged in any way, then they need replaced.

      @@johneppenauer6772 there are times that you do. But you get new shims with a master install kit.

    Ordered a clamshell bearing puller from ebay... yea, got one bearing off the 10.5. Doing the other side, that monster threaded rod ended up punching through the nut when tightening. Mine was Cheap china stuff.

    I removed my carrier on my jk and it didn’t have any shims on either side

    I did mine with the Dremel method but that tool is something else... If I had a shop that would be my choice

    When replacing the bearing do you have to reset the gears?

      No. As long as you put the shims back exactly where they were.
