They both sounded good, in general I prefer the Custom '69 as they sound fuller. You can always remove some frequencies to get the thinner sound, but it is hard to add frequencies that aren't there to start with. But as will all things, it is a matter of taste and intended use as to which are the best choice.
Cool video Ben. My American Standard has the Texas pickups. It has a great tone. Sadly, I don't like the fretboard playability too much, as opposed to my Les Paul's, one of which is a Dean copy, my favorite one. 🙂👍✌☮🎸🎹🥁🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 I love the sound of both these beasts.
They both get close, depending on the amp. I think the Pure Vintage '59 or '61 get closer for SRV and the Pure Vintage '65 for Hendrix. But the Texas Special and '69s are great as well.
@benpowersguitar I want to change the pickups in my guitar, but I'm really torn between Texas Special and Custom 69. I mainly play Hendrix but I also like SRV's tone. Right now I have Pure Vintage '65s but I want something with more power. I don't know what to do
@@Gimi.Endrics Odd, mine aren't weak sounding at all. They (PV '65) are what come in the Hendrix strat. Hendrix was only alive less than a year after the '69 strat came out. SRV had '58s with a slightly hot neck, so PV '59-'61 should be about spot on. The Texas Special, which he never played, are meant to get closer to his sound without the amp settings etc. What kind of amp are you using? Can I recommend you my settings listed in the beginning of the vid? They came from Matthew Scott, really changed how I felt about certain pups and got the tone range I wanted. If you don't have a master, use the Gain as the master. When I use the TS9, I have the vol almost max, the OD almost 0 and the tone at 12 o'clock. IF I was going to choose between the TS and the '69s, it's '69s for me.
@@benpowersguitar I have exactly one Fender Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster Artist Series, and I recently purchased a PRS HDRX 20 amplifier. Previously, I owned a Marshall DSL 20 CR combo. I also have other cheaper guitars, and I have to say that the pickups on these seem more powerful to me. I have a doubt about my Fender Jimi Hendrix some time ago I decided to experiment and changed the height of the pickups compared to the original factory ones. Is it possible that this change caused a decrease in the power of the pickups?
@@Gimi.Endrics Pickup height can make a difference, as can amp, cabinet, speaker etc. At factory height, they should sound decent. Both Jimi and SRV had their amps cranked to drive the tubes. That greatly impacts tone. But every guitar, guitarist and setup is different. I don't know that you could go wrong with either set of pups. Jimi also uses a good bit of fuzz, and 3 different ones known. Cranked the pedal, rolled back the vol to taste.

Thanks, I appreciate you watching. I bet the Dean looks awesome.
It does, and a nice smooth cool tone and very smooth action on the neck.
@@uncle-andy-guitar-herbst Somehow, I have never owned a Dean. I have well over 50 guitars in my journey.
Overall the Custom 69’s sounded the best.
You'd agree that Texas Specials give you that SRV tone and Custom 69s that Hendrix vibe, wouldn't you?
