Just for those joining. Kyle mentioned spending $2K on plane tickets. There is thing called space A. which means if you are on leave you can get on any military plane and fly for free. If plan it right you can get about anywhere for free, have to have patience. But a big base like Kadena and all the Navy/marine bases you can probably get from Kadena to the west coast any day of the week.

I hope that you see this message!! Your videos make me less scared to join the military. You make me feel comfortable! I'm naturally bubbly, I like to have fun, I like to laugh. I was scared, though, that the military was full of muscle heads with huge arms and shit, all trying to out masculine everyone else. I didn't think I'd make a lot of male friends. But you give me hope! You seem very level headed and a natural happy, optimistic person. I love that. I'm sure I can be myself once I join too!

Omg I can't believe you actually responded!! D: Wow! Okay I don't want to hang you up on this but again, thanks so much for making all these videos! It's hard to see what goes on behind the scenes in the AF or military in general, so you're doing a whole lot for us on the outside! Thanks again, you're so awesome!

Enjoy your time at Kadena--my son, now a M/Sgt with 22+ years in, got Kadena as his first assignment out of tech school (PMEL) and spent 12 years there with one break of 3 years in AZ. My grandchildren were born there and I visited 4 times--once with my mother. It's awesome! The dorms sure are different NOW than back in the early 90s--lucky you! Good luck and thank you for serving! First time I've come across these videos and love them. I was in 1992-1998 and not much has changed. I shipped right to Kadena out of tech school also and spent two years there. I absolutely loved the island. When I left in 1994 there were still vending machines filled with beer for 50 cents a can in our day rooms. Yes the old adage is true in military life- "it was better just before you got here".
I will subscribe and hope you keep posting videos. Best of luck in your Air Force career!

I painted my dorm room International Orange in 1972. Full bird came in for (what at the time were very infrequent) inspection. He was not amused. Typhoon evacuations were a blast (except when they were terrible). SR-71s were cool. Had a piano in my dorm room, too. I almost miss that island (which we transitioned back to Japan while I was there). Almost.

The beaches were so awesome and the ocean water was warm. beautiful people and awesome Japanese cars that aren't in America. The dorms are were you just slept off hang overs.

Your dorm on Kadena AFB is a 4 star hotel room compared to the dorm I was in back in 1963. My dorm was across from the bowling alley then. It was a two story and if you seen it from the air it was a "H" design. All rooms were Two men with locker for each, bed and table. The heads and showers were one on each floor, only one day room with TV. You also had to pay $10.00 each a month for the houseboy that cleaned your room. The laundry was done by a local girl or two, you had to pay also for you unformed cleaning, I forget how much. I was making $210 as a E-4 back then. If typhoon hit the island, you got C-rations three times a day. I got smart on the second one and went to the base flight terminal and was locked in for about 36 hours but at least we got hot meals from the cafe and didn't have to pay for it. I enjoyed the island, learned to scuba dive there. My grandson also was stationed at Camp Torry in 2006-09, he also learned to dive and became a Master Diver With teaching cert through PADI. He said KAFB had the best BX on the island.

When were these built? I was stationed there in 97 to late 99 in the 67th FS and we were all stuck in that big ol condemned former medical hospital. Nasty building but the rooms were quite a bit bigger than the ones shown here :) We didn't have the little kitchenette or shared bathroom though. That's pretty nice. Had to walk like 200 yards to piss in the middle of the night lol.

Way better style of living than any branch in the military. Not including the more knowledge and experience you get from it. Avionics, Air traffic, Police, Administration, Construction, etc. I am not surprised people turn this stuff into careers for 20 to 40 years.

Lol my husband is on mids, too. He got blinds for his windows, I'm gonna tell him about the foil xD
Just amusing to see dorm differences. He's Ammo at Osan, and his dorm room requires a pin number to get into.

Me and my buddy that were stationed there think the living conditions now are worse than we had it in the late 80's and early 90's.. i definitely had more personal individual living space....than you guys have it....

2008-2012 USAF vet here. Man this just makes me even more regretful that I was stuck up at Shaw AFB, SC my whole career. I wanted to go to Kadena so bad, but they just wouldn't let me go. Sometimes I wonder if I should go back to the AF after I finish my bachelors and get commissioned.

I miss Okinawa! and Kadena was by far the best base! from the exchange to the food its 10X better than all the other bases. and the barracks at schwab are from WW2! LOL! full of mold and falling apart!
