  • All The President's Men is a very good movie. A conspiracy thriller released in 1976, it follows the events of two Washington Post journalists who begin to uncover the events of Watergate and ends with the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
It is a movie about the importance of free-press and the personal responsibility for those in positions of power. Today we will be discussing the many elements of it that make it such an engaging watch, and also the one huge problem, that this ending portrays perfectly, that results in the movie being less than the sum of its parts.
    Author Note:
The video turn around on this was kinda quick, was gonna hold onto this for a couple more weeks. But I felt like uploading it, so I did. If you enjoy the shorter videos then please tell me because this was both fun and easy to make.
Also the reason this is "An Analysis Of A Very Good Movie" is because I said all that I could possibly say. I set myself a goal to keep it brief and yet still feel I could have made it shorter. It originally started as a LITE video but I thought it was substantive enough to make it a Sir. Never Give Up video. Not that there's much distinction but you know.

The spectrum of cinema portrayal of media, in my opinion, goes from Newsroom (Highly Dramatic), to Spotlight (Middle Ground between dramatic and grounded) to All The Presidents' Men (Extremely Grounded).
And each of it is entertaining in its own way.

That six-minute shot also uses a split diopter, where you can see that half the scene is blurry...but it is so subtle you don't even notice it, or that the close up has even taken place. Very effective!

I love this movie as, I think it may do a great job of showing the events of the whole Nixon era, from Rise to Fall. It is this year, 50 years since Nixon resigned and they all do a great job, with music, actors, setdesign etc, to convey as authentic portrayal of 1972-74 of the whole thing.
I understood the, comment of at the beginning, of you don't hear what they are all saying, conversation interupted by a phone call, being tossed around on the phone, but that IS realism. Those are things that happen in real life, especially in setting like this.
The long list of names not being readable, the names don't matter but rather show how many people they had to go through, and check up, who knew who etc.
    Great analysis!

While I agree in principle that the movie wanting to display the sense of Nixon's resigning was the end to the injustice is...well, naive, it had some measure of credibility from the creators at the time. I think many regular people who lived through the Nixon years and even beyond genuinely believed corruption was a problem of bad faith individuals, that the machine itself couldn't become corrupted by bad faith individuals' actions, creating systemic issues later down the road.

The film doesn’t begin with Nixon’s inauguration-it begins with the 1972 watergate break-in with footage of Nixon about to address congress after his recent groundbreaking trip to China-arguably the highest moment of his presidency

That's good to know, I'm not American so I don't really have a good grasp on American history. Thanks!
