    If you think 750 hp from a 2L v4 is crazy, you should react to the bmw m12, a 1.5L inline 4cyl F1 engine running on 5.6 bars of boost and producing over 1400 hp in the mid 80's.

      of course, the engine rarely lasted over 2 laps, but it didn't need to. they would just be thrown onto the stack and they'd fit a new one in in just 15 minutes.

      Ahhh, good old Days, when fuel was cheap and the glorious M10-Engines from BMW ruled the world. Trivia: Did you know they only used old motor blocks which where lying around outside the factory, the older the better, because steel doesn't get worse over time, no it has got better and better. The Fuel came from ESSO: Advertising slogan: Put the tiger into the tank. And sometimes I thought the must have meant real fluffy tiger-babys.

    In 1986 the BMW F1 engine already had 1500 hp,since that time the FIA reduced the power of the engines constantly.

    Ian, have a look at the history of the "Porsche 917" back in the 1970s with its 4 litre twin turbo 1,200 BHP (Brake Horse Power) Group C Racer to be gob smacked. The cars were banned because they were such MONSTERS and no one could compete. Try 2.5 G lateral cornering acceleration. acceleration like an AA fuel dragster full on and so fierce the drivers had to have their legs in slings so that their feet would not slide off the pedals (this was old style rear drive. The 917 would give an interesting hurry up to the EVO !! BUT BUT THEN have a look at what (MONSTER !! ON STEROIDS !!!) the guys at the Porsche Works in Zuffenhausen were quietly working on !! My god !!! For the 4 wheeled equivalent to the NASA SATURN 5 ROCKET, the engine a 5 liter flat 16 cylinder (NOT 4 litre !) with a crank so long they took the power off the crank shaft from the middle to eliminate flex and it was to go in one of two Group C prototype chasis with "ALL WHEEL DRIVE !!! You got that Ian ???!! That was back in the 1970s with none of the latest hi tech stuff. Of course the project was cancelled (Damn !!) but you can see the motors and chasis etc at the Porsche Museum !!! Evo is nice but that 5 litre could have produced near 2,000 BHP possibly and it would SMASH the 917 lap records and especially the long Mulsanne Straight in Le Mans !! Sad but man !!!

      group c was only started in the 80's. group 6 which the 917 was part of got killed off only because it was never intended to stay beyond 72 anyways. it was a grandfathering ruleset for older cars to compete and fill up the grid more which porsche and ferrari took advantage off nearly bankrupting both of them.
      the 917/30 was a group 7 car which used the flat 12 of the 917 with a turbocharger, originally it was intended for a flat 16 without turbo but the turbo option was easier. group 7 killed itself also due to the massive spending.

      At Holloman AFB, John Paul Stapp made history aboard the Sonic Wind I rocket sled on December 10, 1954, when he set a land speed record of 632 mph in five seconds, subjecting him to 20 Gs of force during acceleration. Although he had a surplus of volunteers for the dangerous ride, he chose himself for the mission, not wanting to place another in such a potentially hazardous position. When the sled stopped in just 1.4 seconds, Stapp was hit with a force equivalent to 46.2 Gs, more than anyone had yet endured voluntarily. Though he managed half a smile as he was pulled from the sled he was in great pain, and his eyes flooded with blood from the bursting of almost all their capillaries. As Stapp was rushed to the hospital, he worried that one or both of his retinas had detached, leaving him blind. Fortunately, by the next day, he had regained enough of his normal vision to be released by his doctors, though his eyesight would never fully recover.

The power accelerated the flywheel up to 40000 rpm. This rotating energy can be used for acceleration for the 2-front-electric-engines. So for some seconds the 911 has 4WD. The power output was about 200 PS. 488 PS from the 6Ender-Boxer + 200 PS Hybrid.

    The earliest automotive use of V4 engines were in Grand Prix racing (later called 'Formula One') cars. One of the pioneering V4 engines was in the 1898 Mors rear-engined car built in France.[3][4] At the time, the lack of vibration from the V4 engine was a key selling point.[5] However, the car's V4 engine was replaced by a conventional inline-four engine by 1901.
    In the 1907 French Grand Prix, the car entered by J. Walter Christie used a 19,891 cc (1,214 cu in) V4 engine, the largest engine ever used in a Grand Prix race.[6] The engine was mounted transversely in the front and the car was front-wheel drive. The car retired from the French Grand Prix after just four laps, however, it later set a speed record of 164 km/h (102 mph).[7]
    The first V4 engine used in production cars was the Lancia V4 engine that was first used in the 1922 Lancia Lambda.[8] The Lancia engine was a narrow-angle design with an angle of 20 degrees between the banks and a single cylinder head with one overhead camshaft shared by both banks. It also used aluminium for both the block and head (which was unusual for the time).[9] Lancia produced V4 engines until 1976, when they were replaced by flat-four engines.
    The 1960-1994 ZAZ Zaporozhets is a Soviet city-type car that used a rear-mounted V4 engine.[9] This engine was based on the design used in the LuAZ-967 amphibious military vehicle. It featured air-cooling with a magnesium block and was produced in displacements from 0.7-1.2 L (43-73 cu in).[10]
    The AMC Air-cooled 108 was a 108 cu in (1.8 L) engine built from 1960 to 1963 for use in the lightweight M422 Mighty Mite military vehicle.[11][12] The M422 developed was by American Motors Corporation (AMC) in the United States and specifically designed to be transported by helicopter.[13][14]
    Beginning in the 1960s, Ford's European divisions produced two unrelated V4 engines.[9] The first was the Ford Taunus V4 engine, produced in Germany from 1962 to 1981. The Taunus was a 60-degree V4 engine with water cooling and overhead valves. Initially designed for use in front-engined cars, it was used in various Ford models and also used in the front-wheel-drive Saab 95, Saab 96, and Saab Sonett models. It was also used in the mid-engine Matra 530 sports car.[15][16][17] The second Ford V4 engine was the Ford Essex V4 engine, produced in the United Kingdom from 1965 to 1977 and used in several Ford Corsair, Capri, Consul, Zephyr, and Transit models.[18] Although designed separately from the Taunus engine, the Essex also was a 60-degree V4 with water cooling, overhead valves, and designed for use in front-engined cars/vans.
    The Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1 racing car used in the 2014-2017 seasons used a 2.0 L (122 cu in) 90-degree turbocharged V4 engine that was mid-mounted.[19]

    I don't know for sure, if that's why Porsche chose a V4 engine, but 90°-V4 with 90°-270°-90°-270° ignition timing is supposed to get torque better down (or rather: don't overstrain the tires by giving them that small amount of extra-time between the firing of its cylinders) because of its uneven firing order. That's also why quite a few race bikes use V-configurations, and the Yamaha R1 has an inline four with a crossplane crank (270° - 180° - 90° - 180° ignition).

    I think the main reason for both Audi and Porsche pulling out from LMP1H class was due to costs and since the FIA did nothing about implementing a cost cap despite the constant nagging from the teams (mainly Audi and Porsche, with Toyota signing the letters but not being vocal about it - as usual), it got to the point where the camel's back broke. IIRC, there were some statements in 2017-2018 that said the R&D costs for those cars were somewhere around €400M per season, but don't quote me on that.
    No matter how much tech the teams got out of it that could be used for road cars (and according to them they got A LOT of useful things from all that R&D which made it somewhat worth it to run for 5-6 years), they just couldn't keep dumping that much money on hybrid tech that was proving to not be reliably applicable on road vehicles and they just moved their focus to Formula E and relevant tech. It is also relevant to mention the fact that those cars were designed to run for 24h which, in a way, is a live stress test under extreme conditions on any component that could be used on a road car, unlike F1.
    This is also why you see both Audi and Porsche not getting into the F1 grid as teams but mainly as a power unit supplier (Audi) and R&D cooperation + usage of specialized infrastructures type deal (Porsche with Red Bull). They already know how much of a headache it is and what they actually want/need from F1 from their experience running the LMP1H.

  • @grabedigger
    @grabedigger ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It happens (car is decommissioned) because most of these cars are test beds for new tech that will eventually land on road cars.
    Maybe we'll be seeing some VW/Audi with V4 bangers in the future.
    The thing now, as it is in F1, is using e-fuel (full synthetic gasoline), made via electrolysis of Carbon Dioxide, paired with Hidrogen to create new benzene and gasoline molecules, which are all Carbon and Hidrogen combinations with the main molecule being benzine. Meaning that cars using this e-fuel can produce their own fuel via Carbon Dioxide which will be captured again and re-processed at a facility later on. The CO2 emmissions will drop significantly and it is told to be the last nail in the Electric Car coffin.
    The only culprit here is the electricity needed to generate more e-fuel due to the Carbon and Hidrogen needed to be removed from CO2 and H2O respectively vie electrolysis.

    Funny thing is, if they make an F1 car without rules, it would still look like the 919 Evo. The open wheels add to drag but they need to be kept that way due to the rules, so if you take away the rules the F1 wheels while be covered like an LMP car.

    • @toolbaggers
      @toolbaggers ปีที่แล้ว

      And an LMP car without rules would be a single seater. Porsche didn't change the "2 seat" layout of the 919 due to not wanting to redesign a new car but just modifying an existing car and changing a car to central single seat would required a complete redesign of the chassis.
